Gambol is a wall-hopping, ceiling-slapping jaunt of a platformer with straight forward controls, and buttery smooth movement. You control the Gambol Gumball through a gauntlet of levels designed with flow and rhythm in mind to test your platforming grit.

Was handed a business card for this game and as a person who likes neither platformers nor indie games, I decided this was the optimal game for me to try out. Despite my taste, I was pleasantly surprised with this game. I played the first world and had a pretty good time. The controls and movement are great as advertised. Definitely a gargantuan step above things on greenlight or flash games. The plug-and-play controller support was a huge welcome. The sountrack was refreshing and I heard something new throughout what I played. The learning curve was a plus as well. A simple level would introduce a mechanic and test your ability in the next, more challenging level. If there's anything I'd like to see it's an audio cue for boosting, as well as having the worlds locked until you complete the one prior. In the grand scheme of things I would not be able to put this game down if it had some kind of level timer and leaderboards. Otherwise this game is a worth it whether you love or hate platformers.

This is a super unique and charming game. It melds the best aspects of Genesis era games with the early Newgrounds indie scene, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. The movement feels so fluid, and it's just a really fun time from beginning to end. It's the perfect level of difficulty, and even though it can feel really stressful at times, it always has a super chill vibe that makes you want to keep playing and not give up. I can't recommend this game enough.

"Gambol" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a rather badly made 2D "platformer" where you control a bouncing, sometimes gravity defying gumball and bounce around your usual spikes and other moving hazards and platform around for no discernable reason. Simple, but janky and unpolished controls are a perfect complement to the ugly, phoned in graphics. There's no polish here, although part of that would be due to the "no-code" kids toy construction kit, Construct 2. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. This game is fairly dated at 7 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging an utterly delusional $10 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
