The offerings here are fun, but the games are absolutely a product of their time. I think as a time capsule to examine and even have fun with the versions or routes in G-Darius that represent its best aspects, G-Darius HD is more than serviceable. Provided you understand G-Darius' historical context. G-Darius was released at the height of Japan's fighting game boom. It was an ambitious title for the Darius series, representing its jump into 3D. There's a lot I can say, but I want to get to the point: G-Darius, unfortunately, is a title who's design is marred by greed. Even before Version 2's more nefarious changes, the game represents a response to the rise in player skill and even tools players could utilize to improve at video games, such as video recordings of their own playthroughs. G-Darius wants to kill the player, and learning certain techniques are more about trying to find out what the game deems an acceptable solution in many instances. There are lots of really satisfying moments and shot configurations to dodge, but as a memorizer, G-Darius can be insufferable in terms of how it presents scoring. I want to really discuss that. Getting a 1CC is "Good enough", and I think that the irony of the shmup genre is that even games like Metal Black, to get the full experience of the game, to literally see the montage of what that game sees as "Human Progress", in a duration that doesn't flash before your eyes, you HAVE to be playing for score. In that sense, I don't want to say that G-Darius holds the same conceit, but it's that G-Darius doesn't even necessarily have that kind of moment per say. You can play the game strictly for survival and do quite well. But... The game insists on ranking the player. I found it very funny that in a game where I scored much lower and died, I received the rank of "Silver Hawk", but on a 1CC on arguably the easiest route in the game where I was just under 20 million points, an achievement in this game, the game ranked me "Iron Hawk." That is the problem with G-Darius, it can't quite succeed on its own terms without giving away that much of its difficulty is about profit extraction. Don't believe me? Taito execs mandated less play time per credit, that much is known, but as for how it affects the game, it stains the kind of things players will praise G-Darius for. "Depth" is really convoluted bloat here when sometimes all you're doing is fighting something for the sake of making an already challenging game more difficult. And who knows if that would pay off for scoring, you're on your own or you're finding some nutcase in a discord. There's just a very baffling risk/reward at play that informs scoring and playing well, and that is the very thing you'd want to spend a lot of time, in theory, refining as a player. I often find myself asking "Should I be fighting this boss? Should I even bother with this route?" G-Darius can be tedious for seemingly little reason, but then you remember that this was the game where, again, "Less play time per credit." That is what Herbert Mercuse called "Regressive Sublimation." As much as I want to talk about the game on the terms of design, why do that when you know there's a large, non-zero percent chance that what you're experiencing contributes to that bottom line. I don't actually believe ALL of these decisions can be attributed to that "Greed." There's a G word for you, but it's important to note that neither direction is favorable. Either these are awful ideas at the player's expense or it's profit extraction. Why lose the Alpha Beam bonus by fighting Fire Fossil's bottom route? Well, it can prepare you to fight Queen Fossil if you move toward the bottom path to Omicron, but you could achieve that just by fighting Queen Fossil. Lightning Coronatus has patterns where the risk/return absolutely makes zero sense in terms of letting it attack you and how long its parts are vulnerable. The timer you are allotted when look at the gadgets shows that, in the designer's assumption, you would spend 10 minutes fighting a boss. If it isn't killing you, when you start surviving you start realizing that you're doing a whole lot of nothing as the game stalls. And unlike Metal Black, there's nothing to see for it than patterns where you're just waiting to break a robot seahorse's tiny widdle arms. But why complain about any of this? I think it is what it is, but I think M2 not having an arrange mode, just leaving a time capsule, that is something that I would hold against them. But, frankly, maybe they couldn't? Squeaky wheel gets the grease. I really don't think that any of that is enough to dock this port. It works well, you're not actually losing money, but before I go recommending the game to anyone, which I am, there absolutely needs to be a caveat. You should be very cautious about how you invest your time in G-Darius, you're getting all that history here. But G-Darius can be fun, I learned the top route and have had enough fun just poking and prodding at the game trying to see how much further I can go. Some discoveries are a little more irksome than others, but if you like shmups there are worse things to experience. I would love a theoretical version of the game where charge canceling, say, snaps your controlled ship to your position, things that feel snappier and more directly under the player's control, patterns that aren't about stalling so the player might literally die from the experience of boredom... but this is the game that also gave us Kimera II. History is beautiful and ugly. Unlike some recent games, I can say that for all its flaws I am enjoying myself and it's worth seeing or even feeding a few credits if you're not into the whole scoring thing.
DISCLAIMER: It's great that this version exists to bring the game to modern platforms for those who otherwise don't have other means of playing it, but I am exceptionally persnickety about emulated ports. _ Never thought I'd ever give a negative review for a game I love. G-Darius HD is not the slam dunk I was hoping for. I play the original frequently, but the new features and enhancements added to this version were not substantial enough for me to justify buying it. My biggest complaints are that M2 didn't include options to address the bigger issues with the original, and the new screen mode is extremely limited in scope. -In-game BGM still stops mid-stage during load operations. A limitation of the disc-based original that I was hoping would be fixed in this port. -The slowdown reduction isn't as good as emulating. The included PS1 version is especially slow in this. -Superwide screen mode is an exhibition that only includes a few boss fights. This was my biggest disappointment. -Audio stutters a bit. A great injustice to ZUNTATA's work. Returned. Dunno if I should even bother trying the Ray'Z collection, then.
M2's masterful port of another Taito classic!
Constantly overshadowed nowadays by the increasing popularity of Darius Gaiden yet, to me, superior in many small ways that make an overall big difference. __________ GRAPHICS ~ Whereas Gaiden has a feeling more like a fever dream, G-Darius truly feels like a universe of diverse, wild planets, brought to life in awesome 3D with graphics that have aged incredibly well for its time. Backgrounds come absolutely alive with activity far too numerous to detail here, including huge flying raptors in one and a shooting comet in another. And the bosses are HUGE. You've never experienced Darius' surreal mecha-aquatic monsters and worlds like this before! MECHANICS ~ G-Darius' gameplay has more depth with the new capture ball mechanic, giving the player three options when an enemy is captured: teamed attacks, positional bombing and the awesome Alpha Beam to help overcome your foes before you're overwhelmed. Not to mention every enemy you capture has a unique function all of its own, useful in specific scenarios! This was lightly & sporadically introduced in Gaiden, but fully fleshed-out as its own controllable mechanic here, and it pays off in spades. BOSS BATTLES ~ Unlike the genre's typical pew-pew-boom-pew-pew-boom, this game wants you to survive increasingly-difficult boss attacks before that moment when you spot their upcoming charge and counter-beam them in a duel to the death. It's a different take that made me appreciate the virtue of patience in shmup gameplay, and it never fails to both intimidate & excite me every time! DIFFICULTY ~ It might be just me, but nearly every route I take in Gaiden I can beat in less than 10 credits on normal difficulty. This one, on the other hand, takes me about 30 credits! It's a real bastard at times. Make no mistake, G-Darius is one hell of a challenge and never catches you daydreaming on the job... spaced-out trip notwithstanding. MUSIC ~ Gaiden may have the better tunes, but G-Darius has the best full soundtrack experience of the series. Seems like every Darius entry contains tracks where I feel myself pulled out of the flow state by my eyes rolling whenever certain tracks play -- freeeeeeedummmmmmmm. And even though the series is no stranger to what would be termed a more atmospheric, almost ambient bend at times (which is weird for the genre), it really fits here. It's like ZUNTATA approached this game orchestrating a score for a movie. I don't experience it as individual tracks (although some stand out on their own), but as a fore-to-aft soundtrack that completes and enhances the journey. It's so surreal, it's nigh-on spiritual! THE PORT JOB ~ Special mention must be made to M2, who really went the extra mile to add in as much extra content as possible. Both arcade releases, a home release, an exclusive exhibition mode for the PC release, art galleries, a capture gallery for you to keep track of, lots of achievements and more. Their HD remaster may be subtle, but it's damn-near revelatory, especially in graphics and original hardware slowdown. (Veterans have said it's like they were experiencing the game for their first time, and I believe them.) I think it says a lot that, out of all the Darius games they've ported, G-Darius is the only one that got a full standalone release. __________ Just as its legendary cabinets attest, the Darius series has always been about trying to do it's own thing, like the creators were coming together every time to try and tap into some other and make the result feel like a unique project all their very own. G-Darius is, I believe, the distillation and fulfilment of that very philosophy: the only title entry where, I find, the whole weirdness of the Darius experience finally coalesced together into a wondrous, harmonious, cosmic whole. It's a shmup so good that, when I'm not playing it, just thinking about it puts me into a state of... m e d i t a t i o n .
What a weird ride - at first i almost refunded it due to extreme ragequit, then it became my first ever 1CC achievement. I'm not that great at shmups in spite of being a fan of the genre, but the lambda route is genuinely humanly doable on default settings with some practice and strategy (30-ish hours as of time of writing). Strategy being key word here - while basics of shooting & dodging are important, the key to success really lies with figuring out how & when to use the capture balls. You can use enemies not only for additional firepower, but also as shields or screen-clearing bombs. Art design and music is super cool and unique - surreal and spooky but also colorful and whimsical. Lovely lowpoly dreamscapes (especially the glacier stage) in background make me feel bad for not being able to fully pay attention to them because there is so much ♥♥♥♥ going on. My only gripe would be the odd balance of forgiveness vs punishment - you have a shield that allows you to tank plenty of hits before dying and has frequent refills, but if you do actually die the punishment of powering down is so severe, you basically should never ever die anywhere before the final stage if you wanna get 1CC. It's this one thing that has to be accepted in order to avoid ragequitting but it was kinda tough for me to wrap my head around it lol. Lastly, the M2 port is just great and i wish more of their stuff came to steam, these guys are like Nightdive studios but for arcade games instead of FPS. It's probably just a nicely packaged emulator, but there is value in that. Not only it works out of the box, but also has great UI, gadgets thingies that reveal normally hidden variables and most importantly, robust stage select and automatic savestates that make practicing the game equally (if not more) fun than doing actual runs.
A game about killing robotic fish or something. Anyways this game is a classic of my childhood even if the difficultly is insane, infinite lives make that a non-issue, or you could play under arbitrary limits. Either way it's a pretty great time blasting fish.
finally a good game
