This game is not about football as played in the NFL. This game is solely about the developer's AI and his swooning over how complicated it is. However, this game doesn't remotely approximate any useful aspect of the NFL game, with most of its focus devoted to "negotiating" player salaries you really can't affect anyway--the process amounts to simply rubber-stamping the players' demands or letting them sign with another team--there is no real negotiation. Like so many NFL simulations that have existed, the developer hasn't bothered to learn the game, its rules, or its actual execution. Most of the game is devoted to the developer inserting himself and his precious AI into every aspect of every play, primarily employing turnovers, penalties, and injuries to thwart, disrupt, and destroy any positive effects you manage to generate on the field. It is abundantly clear the devloper believes the point of the NFL game of football is to cheat one team out of SOMETHING on every play. My favorite idiocy in this area is how the program simply will NOT allow you to call a time out, field goal, or spike the ball inside of two minutes left in a close game. I've had three games cheated away from me by this feature alone, which in 50 years of following the NFL I've never seen occur even once. You simply cannot exert ANY contol over any aspect of on-field play. You can't improve any aspect of your players to keep them from fumbling, throwing picks, or causing penalties. The only thing allowed in the pathetic "training camp" is to change a player's weight. At this point you should know I have played two full seasons mostly calling my own plays--which the program heartily discourages--and I've found when you do so, the turnovers, penalties, and injuries increase exponentially, as if deliberately designed to cheat you out of anything that goes your way. The offseason is even more ridiculous. I have yet to discover how one gives a player the franchise tag, because it simply doesn't present as an opportunity. There is literally no point between the end of one season and the beginning of another where you are ALLOWED to tag a player as your franchise player. There's a button for it on every player's page, but it is never active. Great feature. Of course, this wholly inadequate program doesn't include anything like rollouts, passes by players other than a QB, flea-flickers, wildcat formation, direct snaps to non-QBs, long passes to RBs, laterals, in-game substitution of players, or virtually any other of the dozens of things that happen in an NFL game. The only point of this game is for you to spend hours setting things up for each game so the computer can play the game by itself. Bottom line, there are hundreds of things wrong with this game, and it bears no resemblance to anything that happens in the NFL. Don't waste your time or money on this game, unless you're some skinny-armed accountant nerd who believes football is about salaries and letting the computer play the game for you.
Great Football sim. My hours prove it. I only GM control team and roster. I don't call plays. I run out 20 seasons with a team then try another.
great management game
And i thought I know football
(Edit: at 39 in game hours played. Game very accurate, been playing as minnesota. On my roughly 30 year in game, been to super bowl 4 or 5 times now. Have lost them all.) This has its good's and bad's. I overall like 7 better, but maybe that's because it was my first one i played. This does have some improvements though so not a bad game. If you've played any of the older ones you'll still like this one.
Game Good
Good NFL Stat Sim...could be Great!?!...with some improvements it could be up there with Madden!!
Pretty decent simulation of actual NFL rules. Wish there was/is a player stats option more robust than present.
... but if you do that, if you allow yourself to play this game... you'll never come back.
This game changed my life, no hyperbole.
