"Frogman Magmaborn" is a story-driven roguelite tactical-RPG that seems a little amateurish in the spritework- and animation-department, but oozes charm and personality. Gameplaywise you play the titular main character meeting delirious allies and foes in a hellscape-limbo and combat your way out of it early-"Fire-Emblem"style! You gain new stats after each map and the maps have some layout-variety in each chapter. After each death the cycle resets, but you manage to retell more and more memories of your past, thus gaining new abilities that bolster your survival chance on the next run. The story is unique and solid and the writing is nice, but there are some typos and some cutscene-backgrounds seem to be "placeholder". But this may get ironed out, for the dev seems very responsive! Also: There is a modding tool for customisable maps/campaigns! And on top of that: It is free! Definetly try it out, if you like rough and bold experiences or the genre in general!

A very charming roguelike that plays like a classic turn-based tactical RPG on the NES(think Fire Emblem). A little slow at first, but once you get into the roguelike-loop and get to know all the quirky characters behind the charmingly subpar spritework and chiptune soundtrack, it'll reel you in for another run before you know it. I have a bit of a bias because I love Fire Emblem and
i don't really have a lot to say about this one. it's pretty simple, but that didn't bother me much. i liked it's story more for how it told itself, rather then the contents of it's story. overall it's pretty good. maybe give it a try sometime.

"Frogman Magmaborn" is a godawfully bad RPG Maker-like (actually worse than an RPG Maker game, if that is possible) JRPG with a frog theme (huh) and some of the worst graphics to ever insult the gaming industry. Needless to say, this is a huge failure. What do you do in the game? It's a combat focused JRPG with a bunch of procgen used as a substitute for content. The "game" here, such as it is, is of a pretty low technical standard. The implementation is basic, minmimum effort stuff, more like a 'weekend project' rather than a commercial/professional product... it's bad even compared to most amateur made games. An experimental piece... and the experiment is "can I spend $100 on Steam Direct and then call myself a game dev?" While that $100 spend on Steam Direct probably made the developers feel good about themselves, we have to ask why this kind of thing is good for gamers. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. The graphics here are particularly awful, pixelcrap combined with a stupid 1:1 aspect ratio, indicating the developer never saw or used a PC before... they do not make gaming monitors, or any monitors with a 1:1 aspect ratio... that comes across as insulting, and the pixelcrap is so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. I didn't have to pay for this, but I still feel like I got scammed.
frogman is a great game. a little buggy with the dialogs but i've been in contact with the creator and he will fix all the issues and release a new patch. the combat system is challenging and harsh but fair, it's a rogue-like free game with a good plot and you can really feel the progress you make. i highly recommend everyone to play
