I bought this so that I could study chess while in long airplane flights (i.e., no internet connect). It turns out this Steam Fritz requires an internet connection. It's documented and complained about for that reason on forums. Go to offline mode in Steam and this Fritz won't launch (known issue). You can start in online mode and then go on the airplane, but if the App crashes (.... which it does...) then you cannot start it again. So, I am giving Fritz a thumbs down: if I had an internet connection, I would just connect to Lichess.org or Chess.com.
Awesome! great price, great game!

I am a simple chess player who wants to improve my skills a bit. My expectation is that I want to play with somebody online / offline and either get help along the way or go back and see what the best or worst moves were, and how the positions have changed the advantage and at given times get good advice on what better moves were. However the UI is really bad and the game is buggy. In terms of functionality it does not live up to the promises at all. Finding things in the UI, figuring out what does what takes ages. Continuous analysis could be a great feature, but sometimes it is stopped. Random clicking turns is sometimes on again but often not. The analysis shows you a bar indicating how good and bad a position was. Great feature but it is often broken, and does not how anything, or something completely random. The complete analysis function seems to analyze the entire game, but really often just does nothing apart from using compute. It has a setting where you can set the seconds. No clue what it does, but if you use the default typically around 4-5 seconds it finishes in say 10-ish seconds. If you increase the setting by just one second. It finishes in minutes to 10s of minutes… Managing variants is also totally cumbersome. There are so many things where you need to click around and figure out what they are doing and then they don't work. As with functionality there is a simple explanation, which tells you the best move, in human language with audio… so this is fun. However, it does not explain to you why this is the best move, what the consequences are. If you need any more info than blindly following that advice, you are back to the engine output. The engine output is quite useful at times and gives more info than just the variants. However, only sometimes and it is some text in a small window. Just to round up, needless to say that the simple explanation is buggy and sometimes gives you really bad advice making you drop from a balanced position to a clearly losing one. Its it the same engine which creates the tips which then later tells you it is a really bad move?!? If the UI would be better and it would not be as buggy as it is, it would be a solid program. Even then the “AI that speaks” is pretty much an over-promise. It is merely a few hard coded names for specific moves which are voiced over. I would have expected more in these days. After looking at the other chess software it is worth adding that the features they are trying to build are actually really good, if only they would make them work and create a UI you can actually understand. Note that you wont get a refund as with just a game or two you will exceed the 2 hour limit. So really this is an absolute no buy recommendation,
Ha I hesitated to buy ver. 20 when I read the negative reviews. I got former versions (ver 18 incl. Chessbase DB). Grr bought ver19 by accident and asked at the spot for a refund - I got. :) I surely recommend this game, a gem for that price and if you want a missing database (I have one older from previous releases), there is a free one from Chessbase to import so why these complaints ? and a super user friendly GUI. Thx Steam for offering this game. Stockfish as engine exists (with for me Arena) but this beats ...if you love to play chess, buy. Thx again Steam.
