SERIOUS ISSUES, MISSING FEATURES, and IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED 1) No serial Key to extend Chessbase subscription (don't even bother yourself to find it), and many more aspects to improve immediately with an upgrade, here we are: 2. The voices in Italian are terrible! It was ten thousand times better before, at least let us choose. They speak so slowly in the easy game. In the "Normal" game, there's no spoken voice anymore, why? It was so much fun! 3. Extremely complicated menus, too many redundant tabs. There's no need to split into Easy Game, Analyze, Classic Menu!! Come on! one window would have been enough, we are no more in 2002. 4. Database creation is IMPOSSIBLE, you can’t even save a position quickly, everything is so convoluted! 5. But why on earth don’t you integrate the Chessbase multimedia streaming service for subscription lessons directly into the app’s tabs without having to go through the browser?????? I don’t get it. 6. How is it even possible that you didn’t include a repertoire of Tactics puzzles? You’re really making me angry. There are free services like Lichess that have tens of millions of them! 7. You removed the automatic coach intervention with the dedicated window when mistakes are made. Now you have to hover over it and explicitly click to start it. 8. There’s NO FUNCTION to review the “training” moves from MY past games, the ones obtained from Fritz analysis? Why not? I’d like to study them but it’s not possible. 9. There’s NO FUNCTION that allows me to take part in a simulated tournament with engines of different strengths. 10 Why on earth does the engine accept draws in positions where it’s clearly winning?? 11. Why the hell haven’t you, in 2025, still integrated an automatic system to export my Blitz/Rapid games from my Chess.com or Lichess accounts to analyze them, understand my trends, estimate my Elo, genereate an insightful report with my strenghts and weaknesses, and generate puzzles from those same games at the points where I made mistakes? 12. How the heck is it possible that after 25 editions we only have 15 endgame patterns for training?? You should include as many as possible of every type of balanced and unbalanced situation, I mean, at this point just hire me. 13. Explain to me the point of NOT INCLUDING a training mode at least with 200 unbalanced middlegame positions, what would it have cost you? 14. Explain to me in simple terms why the AI you promise is only there to make the bot say a couple of stupid lines, but not to actually talk to it or have a real exchange. And above all, if you integrate AI (with its infinite possibilities), give it the full instruction set to steer it toward positional discussions, opening insights, strategic plans, and specific endgame tips, history (Mine one says only that it is a pity playing with the black, that's it). Basically, there’s no damn AI (which is why I paid for Fritz20). 15. The bot voices are totally fake and all sound the same, change the pitch — Paul Morphy has the same one as the sewer rat. 16. Integrate a game client to use Chess.com or Lichess.net from within the Fritz program, since the ChessBase game servers are dead and useless (and it even opens those in the browser…). 17. Add a guided setup for creating my opening tree, and most importantly link it to statistics on how much I stick to it on Fritz and on my Chess.com/Lichess account. 18. Add a flashcard system to review openings that tracks how many mistakes I make and allows me to reinforce my knowledge. 19. Add a feature to paste a 2D screenshot of a position from another site and use it directly on the analysis board. What the hell am I supposed to do with FEN code? Enough already. 20.The candidate moves system is bugged. During easy game, the system thinks I’ve taken back the previous move anytime I try to indicate my candidated ones, and it doesn’t add them to the list. It’s unclear how it’s supposed to work. 21. The easy game system isn’t calibrated to be human-like like the Chess.com bots. It starts off like an incompetent, giving you an obvious advantage, and then suddenly shifts into turbo mode — and you can feel it. 22. In easy game, I’ve had situations where the engine evaluation went up a lot in my favor, but I lost over 350 Elo points per move in the Elo evaluation. It seems extremely sensitive. A final drop-down report would be necessary, showing with hyperlinks all the blunders, mistakes, inaccuracies, good moves, excellent moves, best moves, great moves, and brilliant moves, so they can be quickly reviewed, saved in personal records, and revisited later as periodic puzzles. The current plain text format, styled like Python code, is useless, barely readable, and extremely outdated for this era. 23. There should be a record that tracks how I’m playing: whether I’m improving, against whom, against which styles, how my performance changes over months, at different times of day, on which move I tend to blunder, what kinds of mistakes I usually make, my resilience, my resourcefulness — with clear references to my previous games. As it is now, nothing makes sense. 24. At the end of a game it’s absolutely unclear when it’s actually over. Let me explain: only the faint word “mate” appears in transparency, and that’s it — there’s no feedback, no follow-up showing me if I deviated from my usual theory, nothing satisfying that transitions from the game to an update window. At the very least it should display 1-0, the engine level, or something along those lines. 25. The easy game matches don’t make it clear what level I’m actually playing against. Even the “candidate master” plays poorly at first, then suddenly dominates the advanced middlegame like a bot, but in the end you can’t tell if you should celebrate, if it just gave you a consolation win, or if it tricked you. It feels more like it’s mocking you than an adaptive model. And who exactly is it adapting to? It doesn’t even seem to learn to know me. 26. In the classic menu, “friendly game” isn’t clear — it says it’s adaptive, so basically it’s just a replacement for easy game but without audio. 27. The “opening training” isn’t training at all. It’s just a thin list with an ECO index of openings that shows you two moves, like Caro-Kann “1.e4, c6,” and that’s it. It doesn’t give you anything else — it starts some kind of game that isn’t clear, maybe an “Easy Game” or a “Friendly,” but at what level? And how is that supposed to be teaching me the opening? It doesn’t correct me, it doesn’t say anything, it’s just a clumsy list of extremely early starting positions. There aren’t even any variations — what am I supposed to do with that? 28. “Calculation training” is an option that could be interesting, but it expects you to provide the position yourself — so it’s not training, it’s self-analysis. There’s no calculation training database at all. 29. The “attack training” and “defense training” are just methods where you only have to click the pieces that can be captured. It is training, but like everything else it’s very bare-bones: no improvement report, no incremental difficulty, no timed challenges (you always get 1 minute), nothing dynamic. There’s no “Battle Rush” mode or a “You’re out after the first mistake” option — you’re forced to slog through it in the single way the developer decided, period. 30. “Click on standard repertoire to open a repertoire” doesn’t do anything even when you click it, and it’s not clear what a “standard repertoire” is supposed to be — maybe the “book without optimal moves,” which is then redefined in a side box as “normal book.” Very confusing. When you hover over the arrow it just repeats “standard repertoire.” There’s nothing clear about any of this — I don’t know if I’m the stupid one or what. 31.The “New Game” box next to “Friendly Game” — what is it supposed to be? I click it and it sets Fritz to 3550 Elo? Even if I chose 960, what exactly would I be playing against? To be continued
Absolute scam. For 25 dollars, you only get a lite version of the Fritz application with no option to use the cloud engine or log into an account (this feature is disabled, so you can only enter and play as a guest). Honestly, it feels like you’re just buying a demo version of this app on Steam, more like a promotion. If you like its basic features, you’ll still need to purchase the full version from the ChessBase website. A huge disappointment. I requested a refund. Not recommended for anyone—even beginners. Free open-source options like Lichess, or even the free features on Chess.com, are much better than this application.
PRODUCT REFUNDED, Just don't buy the steam edition: 1. all the chessbase login features are removed from the Fritz 20 SE. the video you are seeing above (which is showing the login/logout detail in the upper right corner) is for the normal version that you buy from chessbase website. But in steam version all those things or any link that connects you to your cb account cannot be seen. 2. you just get the software with fritz 20 engine. thats it. no database, no opening tree etc. not even a few gm games. 3. although it is cheaper than the regular version, i would suggest you to get a 1 year subscription from chessbase. it will cost you almost the same but you get a ton of things for a year. (video courses, database, tactics etc) 4. YOU CANNOT PLAY IT WITHOUT INTERNET. what is the point of buying this if i can already analyse my games on chess.com or lichess with stockfish. 5. Also, if you have an older version and are thinking about upgrading it, dont. i have fritz 17 and i manually checked the whole interface. i was unable to find anything new except for those AI personalities. they just say a random line when a particular move is played. 6. AI CHAT: i was unable to find such thing. this was the main reason i bought. i thought that i will get to ask a question about a specific move and it will give me the reason why it was played. but i was so wrong.
This game is unfinished. I asked for a refund, but since my 3 day / 5 hour exploration of the game (about 1.5 hours of playtime -- much spent on trying to read documentation and navigating through the terrible user manual) exceeded the 2 hour rule, it was denied. I can not recommend this game or for user's to purchase this through Steam. Since this is the Steam Edition, I think it is important to call out here that *IF* you want to explore Fritz 20, you may want work with ChessBase but NOT Steam, because they do not seem to understand how play/analysis/help times work for chess games. Based on my experience, Fritz 20 SE seems more like a demo. I experienced some GUI glitches after game analysis. In addition, without ChessBase's opening dbs, the value does not seem to be there for the price, users must still remain connected to servers (I got disconnected a couple of times, leading to longer analysis times). I hope future updates fix the user experience, but for now I can't help but feel that I've wasted ~$60USD. Just so you fine folks know, I've been a Fritz fan since Fritz 10. It was my favorite "casual chess trainer bot" for many moons. I do not recommend the current iteration and I am extremely disappointed in this Steam Edition offering.
It doesn't even work properly, many functions aren't fully built and the design overall seems sketchy. Filled with AI and cutting corners. I believe this was made completely with AI infact!
This version of the game does not connect with PlayChess meaning that you essentially pay for a product that has part of the features it advertises. What is worse is that there is no warning this is the case. In addition, you cannot play this game offline. This is probably one of the worst features for a chessengine ever, it is clearly a design error. There is no technical support or a chance to refund if you played more than 2 hours, a time allowance that is not enough to understand how the engine behaves.... I have never left a review but was compelled to give 0 marks both to Steam and Fritz on a product that is basically a scam.
Fun game, but with many limitations
играть с движками круто а вот то что функции нет таких как задач видео печально за 50 эвро поэтому пока не могу рекомендовать
I am a simple chess player who wants to improve my skills a bit. My expectation is that I want to play with somebody online / offline and either get help along the way or go back and see what the best or worst moves were, and how the positions have changed the advantage and at given times get good advice on what better moves were. However the UI is really bad and the game is buggy. In terms of functionality it does not live up to the promises at all. Finding things in the UI, figuring out what does what takes ages. Continuous analysis could be a great feature, but sometimes it is stopped. Random clicking turns is sometimes on again but often not. The analysis shows you a bar indicating how good and bad a position was. Great feature but it is often broken, and does not how anything, or something completely random. The complete analysis function seems to analyze the entire game, but really often just does nothing apart from using compute. It has a setting where you can set the seconds. No clue what it does, but if you use the default typically around 4-5 seconds it finishes in say 10-ish seconds. If you increase the setting by just one second. It finishes in minutes to 10s of minutes… Managing variants is also totally cumbersome. There are so many things where you need to click around and figure out what they are doing and then they don't work. As with functionality there is a simple explanation, which tells you the best move, in human language with audio… so this is fun. However, it does not explain to you why this is the best move, what the consequences are. If you need any more info than blindly following that advice, you are back to the engine output. The engine output is quite useful at times and gives more info than just the variants. However, only sometimes and it is some text in a small window. Just to round up, needless to say that the simple explanation is buggy and sometimes gives you really bad advice making you drop from a balanced position to a clearly losing one. Its it the same engine which creates the tips which then later tells you it is a really bad move?!? If the UI would be better and it would not be as buggy as it is, it would be a solid program. Even then the “AI that speaks” is pretty much an over-promise. It is merely a few hard coded names for specific moves which are voiced over. I would have expected more in these days. After looking at the other chess software it is worth adding that the features they are trying to build are actually really good, if only they would make them work and create a UI you can actually understand. Note that you wont get a refund as with just a game or two you will exceed the 2 hour limit. So really this is an absolute no buy recommendation,
Despite bad reviews here, I find the game really pleasant. The thing I like most is the personalities. I can not distinguinsh between the famous players, I'm not very good for that, but the animals charachters are very differente from each other, Hipermodern have a unique playng, the Owl is hard to beat and so on. The GUI is not so good. I could not make some training lide openings, etc. They could modernize the GUI. Other thing I notice, 20 version is easier to beat in easy game than the 19. Analisys is very good, with coments, but the graphics could be better. I could not make it bigger. 3d boards could be better too, Chessmaster from 25 years ago has better 3d boards, with more control, and I can make the 3d board full screen, which I can not in Fritz. One million games database with games since the 19th century is fun for hours and hours. I really don't know if the Steam version is caped from the original one, but I can recomend it deeply.
