An investigative pixel graphic adventure where you are forced to face events you happened to cut off of your mind.

Game's premise:
You play as Evan, a man waking up in a white room with an apparent loss of memory. While finding himself in confusional state he gets approached by two detectives stating you might know what happened to your dear friend and colleague Lucas who was found lifeless in his apartment. After making a short inquiry to confirm your state of mind, you get left in solitary to come to terms with recollection of previous days. You get asked to call them up once some memory resurfaces again. While exploring different rooms of the building you start seeing vivid images that make you revive the recent events…
Featurings:
This is a less than 1h long game where you can walk around the rooms and interact with objects. While being an indie pixel story rich game with simple design, the background music creates an entrancing atmosphere which goes well with our protagonist’s initial mental state. There are dialogues between characters where you have to pick one of the offered answers, which will influence the ending. One of the two endings gets unlocked once you fill enough a status bar appearing at the top right corner of the screen, which as well depends on taken actions such as the objects you choose to inspect and interact with and the answers you provide to the detectives. Fragments presents a surreal and dark atmosphere coming to the Visual Novel-like setting.
Overall:
I do recommend this game to public looking for a short story-based game that is both entertaining and picking the player’s curiosity. Not recommended if you are looking for a horror gameplay with jumpscares. I really liked the premise of this game but it was massively underwhelming. It was basically clicking the equivalent of "Next" constantly until then end...and then you're sitting there wondering where the last hour and a half went. I got it on sale, and even that was too hefty a price.
9/10 amazing but short horror visual novel
rpgmaker visual novel
I was excited when this game was shown off as a demo for a Vagabond Dog game jam, and even more so when I heard the game was being developed into a full experience. The things that Codapill and his team of collaborators incorporated into this short narrative really provide the experience with a ton of innovation you don't often see in games made in the RPG Maker engine. When you're making a tough decision, you can (quite literally) feel the tension. The suspense and anxiety of each decision encourages additional playthroughs to see how the outcome changes. If you're looking for a mystery narrative game to kill a half hour, I wholeheartedly recommend this one!
It feels like an experimental game, with fairly barebones gameplay and face-value narration. But the systems(world setting and ideas) in place are promising, I'd have hoped for some twists. We need to go deeper...
"Fragments" is a short, but intriguing narrative suspense story that gives you all the answers you need right from the start. Your job, as the confused protagonist, is to put the fragments of your mind back together again in order to come to terms with the reason you've ended up in the position you are in. Through flashbacks and clever visuals, explore the "prison" in Evan's mind with a particular attention to detail and speak your truth. If the idea of seeing alternate endings and dialogue branches aren't enough to keep you coming back to the game, the catchy, original soundtrack might do the trick; you'll be singing it for days after playing. Despite not being tasked to solve this mystery, "Fragments" offers an intrigue that draws the player in and allows them to consider the way they exist in their own world, outside of the game. Overall, a fantastic gaming experience!
Fragments is an awesome narrative thriller, set in the near future when it is possible to reconstruct memories and use these to help solve crimes - what a cool concept! The story is well paced, the game lasts around an hour to an hour and a half (if you want to see everything) and is accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack and cool features like a controller rumble which really adds to the immersion and makes decision making feel like a serious business. Looking forward to playing through it again to explore the alternate ending and unlock more achievements. Really great game from a dev who is exploring some very cool sci-fi ideas! PS: Steam seems to think this game isn't compatible with MacOS Catalina, but it definitely worked fine for me!
It's short, but it's a good little story. Took me two plays to get all of the beats properly. Really enjoy the sci-fi elements, and would love to see them leaned into more. The romantic story is familiar territory, but it's handled well. Grab it and enjoy if you want a quick little narrative.
I would rate this neutral; it's cheap and feels like a short scene from "Always Sometimes Monsters". The dialogue was a bit too slow for my taste, and could benefit from not being -this- predictable from the start.
