FRACTER is an isometric, light-based puzzle game that also requires some stealth to avoid instant death by patrolling shades. It sets a mysterious mood with its grayscale color scheme and minimal lighting within overwhelming darkness: the only sources of light are relevant puzzle elements and a small wisp hovering above you. This provides just enough visibility to keep you on edge when sneaking around shades, who will get down on all fours and charge like rabid dogs if they see you, killing you instantly and respawning you at the last checkpoint unless you manage to first destroy them with light. Including this element of tension was the right decision over puzzles alone, and likely saved FRACTER from being forgettable like so many other bite-sized puzzle games. Level and puzzle design are solid and eventually challenging enough; they predominantly consist of directing pillars of light from their sources to target receptacles—essentially laser puzzles—but also include pushing cubes into gaps and across manually controlled elevation changes. Later on, cubes and other puzzle elements are atop platforms you can rotate, adding to complexity. FRACTER contains seven levels of various sizes and will take two to three hours to complete if you search for all the semi-hidden shades of light, which are basically fractured copies of your character. There's also a challenging achievement or two, such as never dying to a shade throughout the game. The purpose of your journey is abstract and simplistic, revealed to you as quatrains at the beginning of each level; the developers were a bit hyperbolic with some of their descriptions on the product page, but FRACTER is definitely worth a few bucks for anyone who’s a fan of its dark aesthetic or more casual puzzle games.

At first glance I thought it was going to be a charming puzzle game because I like puzzle games and I enjoy playing them very much. But after 4 levels or so I noticed a common trend where you're just solving endless pointless puzzles and getting attacked by creepy crawlies. I was hoping the game would have a story-isk charm to it but it didn't. You also can't save up to where you played so if you actually messed up (like I did) you had to start the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ level again. I was looking for a story driven meaningful puzzle but all i got was repetitive game play. Here's my game play until I gave up: 00:00 - 2:55:00 Fracter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXnTNgROrJg my rant starts at 2:49:00 - 2:55:00
Like this Review? Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
Before starting a game, you will be required to setup your controls; to do this you will first have to keep your joystick as close to the centre as possible, which will allow you to sneak around as you move. Next you will need to be able to run; you do this by moving the joystick as far away from the centre as possible. Doing this will require that you to fill a bar on the screen; once filled you will have calibrated your movement. You can play with either WASD or with a gamepad; I played using an Xbox360 pad, which worked very well. Once you’re done the game will start. You’ll be greeted with a cryptic message each time you reach a new level, after which you’ll find yourself at the bottom of a staircase that leads up into the darkness. Climbing the twisting stairs, you finally reach the top, where you see a ball of light within the centre of a round room. Strange pillars surround the edge of the room, and there are also floating blocks surrounding the ball of light that is closer to you than the pillars. You move towards the ball of light, which will then float above you as you wander around. As you visit each of the pillars, the light will activate them, at which point the floating blocks will convene in the centre of the room (where the ball of light was previously). Next a door will open, streaming light from within; as you move closer the light dims and you see your reflection. As you move to touch the reflection something weird happens . . . your reflection glitches. As you make contact with the reflection, a blinding light shines out and from within the doorway many light souls run off like Black Friday sales have just started, disappearing into the darkness. Once you get back on your feet, the doorway will disappear into the ground. After this happens, one of the pillars will open; moving into the pillar will take you to the first level. You will need to collect all the light souls who are scattered over various levels. As each pillar opens you will see how many light souls can be found on that level. Each level will consist of solving puzzles and collecting any lost light souls you find on the way. These puzzles are easy to start with, as you learn the basics and progress. At the end of each level is a bigger puzzle to complete, before the exit reveals itself to you. The puzzles consist of connecting and moving light sources so that they connect with certain blocks, thereby opening a path for you to continue. At times, you’re unable to move a light source directly onto certain blocks, in which case you can use other blocks to reflect light onto them. You will also need to push large blocks into place or around the levels. Sometimes you will be required to rotate the ground, allowing you to move forward. Each level you make your way through will become more complex in its puzzles. You will also have to deal with some creepy zombie-type creatures, which, when they spot you, will drop to their hands and feet and run after you. If they catch you, you’ll die and respawn at the last time the game saved. There isn’t any manual saving but the game autosaves for you, and should you die you don’t normally lose too much progress. You can defeat these creatures by luring them into light. You can also use the light to bar their way, or try sneaking past them. In the settings you’ll find options for Screen Resolution, Windowed Mode, Antialiasing, Shadows, Bloom, Reflections (On/Off). Joystick Cursor Speed, Brightness, SFX and Music Sliders, Language (English and French). You can also Reset Progress here should you wish to start from scratch again. The game is enjoyable to play; the puzzles start off easy but will become more complex as you progress through the levels. The graphics are good, the sounds and music give the game a very eerie feel. The first time you have one of the creatures drop on all fours and start running after you will have you screaming “WTF”. After which you’ll become even more on edge as you anticipate what hides in the darkness before you. Certainly worth a bash! Positives + Enjoyable game for all + Nice graphics + Good sounds and music which give it an eerie feeling + Achievements Negatives - No cards currently Solve puzzles with light, within the darkness of a mysterious labyrinth as you search for the lost light souls. 8/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB!
A full playthrough runs a bit on the short side but the presentation is bold with lots of atmosphere, puzzles are simple but fun enough to hold interest, a minimalist take on story telling and the controls are easy to use. Overall a quality port and good experience for the price of entry.
Very unique puzzle game with well versed lines and rhymes that challenge you to open exit doors by manipulating light to conquer the darkness on each level to proceed. I love it! Watch my first impressions HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcYGxCY9sjs&feature=youtu.be MY SCORE: Value: 40/40 - This game offers a fantastic puzzle value for a small price tag Fun: 23/30 - The most subjective part of my score delivers for me, if you love good puzzles you'll like it! Controls & Bugs: 20/20 - Offers mouse of controller control of a simple navigation of your character to solve the levels Graphics & Sound: 09/10 - For a puzzle game like this, the sound effects are perfect, and the graphics are very nice! ---------------------------------------- M Y _ S C O R E: 92% - Almost a Zaxtor's Indie Gold! It's SO close!! After I play more, It might just get an extra nudge!
FRACTER is a little atmospheric puzzler, set in a ghost-like, colorless world, that utilizes dynamic lighting as a thematic medium to explore the idea of the self - albeit said premise might be lost amidst unnecessarily obscure wording. Coincidentally, all puzzles intently play into this design choice, with most of them being realized by light-emitting devices; unfortunately, although they evolve slightly as you clear out levels, most are too plain to incite a challenge. FRACTER’s major slip, however, is the implementation of sections in which stealth is required, which prompts a stark disconnection from the rest of the gameplay, and is only worsened by the character’s lousy movement. And so, stripped off its light-and-shadow aesthetic and its thematic execution, FRACTER as a puzzler is sadly meh.
the game is very glitchy. get ready to restart some levels several times
