so good game

Forgotten Hope is a short walking simulator with voice narration told from the perspective of a young girl that copes with the loss of her mother and friend. She is guided by a wolf spirit through her home village while along the way finding memories of her connections to the people she lost. TW: suicide, depression While this walking sim attempts to tackle serious subject matter, such as loss, depression and suicide, the poor writing, bad narration (most notably from the father character) makes for a poor handling of such themes. The story of the girl did not seem to explore the themes further than: "this happened to this girl and it is sad". That being said, I agree, this is a sad story, but other than the over the top, preachy monologue about not giving up hope at the end, this game fell short of providing any meaningful perspectives or insight. One instance where the game showed it's lack of awareness of the sensitive nature of these topics is the scene where the player enters the girls bedroom. Here, there is a quick flash of a rope hanging in her room to shock the player. This really struck a nerve since it can very well be triggering for a player with these experiences. The game design is also poor with the starting area of a cave being so scarcely lit (while holding a torch as light source mind you) that I could barely find the way out with full brightness on. Some of the memories were too well hidden, which makes it a tedious process of exploring the areas over and over. Generally the game ran poorly, but I can forgive that aspect, since it was developed by a small team. The one area that did impress me somewhat was the maze in the final chapter of the game, I thought the 'follow the lights' mechanic was implemented well and I appreciated the scattered objects of each of the characters. In conclusion, while the game seems a well-intentioned serious story about how we deal with loss, the game does not tackle these subjects well enough to say anything meaningful, while not giving the player any gameplay to make up for it.
A nice game that delivers a valuable message throughout its story, addressing the serious topic of mental health. With an emotional narrative and a powerful message for everyone, it’s truly great work.
I'll give it the thumbs up as the game functioned correctly, didn't crash and does all it sets out to achieve. Walking simulator covering mental health/suicide themes. Felt like a personal project and can see some personal love in the way it was crafted by the dev.
The alright: The music The bad: The voice acting The ugly: The game performance. The comic sans grave The game play is unclear.
Lovely little game with a very serious story
