For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. Forbidden Ground - Lair of Aooni is an atmospheric Japanese horror adventure that builds its identity around isolation, supernatural mystery, and the disturbing history of a place that should have remained buried. Developed and published by HYDE, Inc., it follows Himari, a young girl searching for her missing parents alongside other children. Their investigation eventually leads to Koshiwa Elementary School, an abandoned building that had been submerged after the construction of a dam. When drought causes the water level to fall, the forgotten school emerges once again, creating an immediately unsettling location for the events that follow. The concept of exploring a school recovered from beneath a reservoir is one of the game's strongest ideas. Rather than presenting an ordinary abandoned building without much context, the setting carries its own history and sense of tragedy. The old classrooms and corridors represent a community that effectively disappeared beneath the water, and the Showa-era influences give the environment a noticeably different character from contemporary horror settings. The school feels like a preserved fragment of another time, and uncovering what happened there becomes almost as important as escaping the creatures currently occupying it. Himari's situation becomes considerably worse after she falls through collapsed rubble and finds herself separated from the others. Unable to move normally, she encounters Komari, a Japanese doll inhabited by a grudge spirit. This creates one of the more unusual relationships at the center of the adventure. A possessed traditional doll would normally be positioned as an obvious source of danger, yet Komari becomes an unlikely companion. The partnership gives the story some personality beyond its monster encounters, particularly as the pair search for Himari's family members and classmates. Exploration and investigation form major parts of the experience. The school contains memoirs, documents, and other clues connected to its history, gradually providing context for the strange events occurring around Himari. This approach encourages players to pay attention to environmental details instead of treating every room as little more than another obstacle. Discovering fragments of the past steadily develops the mystery surrounding the school, the missing people, and the supernatural forces inhabiting the area. The Blue Demons provide the immediate threat. Their presence transforms otherwise quiet exploration into dangerous pursuit sequences where avoiding the enemy becomes more important than directly confronting it. This creates a useful contrast between slower investigative sections and moments of urgency. The game combines side-scrolling movement, 2.5D presentation, exploration, action, and survival-horror ideas rather than committing completely to one traditional genre structure. Players expecting extensive weapon-based combat should therefore approach it as a narrative-driven horror adventure with evasion and survival elements rather than a conventional action game. Its side-view presentation also contributes substantially to the atmosphere. The perspective allows rooms, hallways, characters, and threats to be framed deliberately, almost as though each area were part of a disturbing theatrical set. While this perspective may not provide the same immediate immersion as first-person horror, it gives the developers greater control over what the player can see and what may be hidden just outside the visible area. The resulting tension works particularly well with an abandoned school where danger could appear from either direction. The story benefits from giving Himari objectives beyond simply finding an exit. Searching for missing classmates and family members establishes a personal motivation for continuing deeper into dangerous territory. Meanwhile, learning about the school's past adds another layer to the journey. The gradual discovery of records and memories helps transform what initially appears to be a straightforward supernatural incident into a broader mystery involving events that occurred long before the protagonist arrived. The game includes single-player play, full controller support, Steam Cloud functionality, achievements, and Family Sharing. It also offers multiple interface and subtitle languages, while Japanese receives full voice support. The store information additionally discloses the use of generative AI during the creation of certain visual materials, including some item imagery, interface elements, and event CG assets, with those materials subsequently adjusted and refined. Players who care about how game artwork is produced may want to factor that information into their purchasing decision. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. The main limitation is that its mixture of narrative exploration and pursuit-based horror may feel restrained to players wanting elaborate combat, large environments, or highly systemic survival mechanics. Its strengths instead lie in mood, mystery, environmental storytelling, and the unusual relationship between Himari and Komari. The premise is distinctive enough to separate it from the many horror games centered on generic haunted locations, while the resurfaced school gives the supernatural story a memorable foundation. Overall, Forbidden Ground - Lair of Aooni presents an intriguing combination of Japanese supernatural horror, historical mystery, exploration, and survival. The resurfaced elementary school is an excellent centerpiece, and the contrast between a vulnerable protagonist, a possessed doll companion, and roaming Blue Demons gives the adventure a recognizable identity. It should appeal most strongly to players who enjoy uncovering disturbing histories and surviving tense encounters rather than fighting through everything in their path. Rating: 6/10
