Reseña de \Flix the Flea\ - Un Brinco a Ningún Lado

RE CHIDO
I feel bad giving this a thumbs down because there is a fair bit I liked about the game. While the art and sounds are simple, they reminded me a lot of the kind of Game Maker and Xbox Live Indie games that you'd see a lot of in the early/mid 2000's and it felt a lot more sincere and charming than the Unity Asset flips you see at the lower tiers of steam nowadays. The character himself is very cute and I loved both the sounds he makes and the little facial expressions. Additionaly, the levels actually had a decent bit of atmosphere which surprised me.This really felt like it could have been a good arcadey little game, and the basic control scheme is interesting. You basically press only the left and right arrow keys, and hold them down to build strength for a jump. It's a simple, but clever twist that should lead to some fun challenges. Unfortunately, the game's big issues are twofold. The first issue is how the game deals with momentum. If you bump your head on the underside of a platform, you lose all horizontal momentum and fall straight down, oftentimes to the start of the level. If they had let you keep just a bit of that horizontal speed it would be a lot easier to recover while still having a fair challenge, which brings me to the second big issue with the game: the level design. Since you're trying to jump upward, you have to make a lot of blind leaps of faith, and you'll bump into the bottom of platforms very frequently and lose your progress. Part of me thinks if this had come out a few years later and been more widely seen it would become a viral youtube rage game like Getting Over It. The level design just doesn't give you any kind of clue or signposting as to what a safe jump is until you've tried it and while you don't want a game to just give you the answer, even knowing where the danger spots are doesn't always help much because the jumps have to be very precise but you just can't adjust your positioning that much because the smallest jump possible is still further than you oftentimes want. I do commend the game for sticking with an oldschool, 2 lives no continues feel and I do enjoy games that you have to master in and out if you want to beat them in one go, but combined with the rest of the game's problems it was just too much to want to keep playing. Additionally, there are some frustrating technical issues, namely that you can't fullscreen the game and it doesn't seem to close properly. I had to fully exit steam to get the game to register as having ended. I do think there is the seed of a good game here, and with some basic level design tweaks it could be a pretty solid little diversion, but unfortunately the current version is just too frustrating to recommend. I hope this developer keeps going and making games because I enjoy the aesthetics they came up with and the central mechanic is a good idea.
The recommended operating system is Windows Vista... that alone should be a hint of the quality of game you're buying. It launches in an 800x600 window that you can't resize - no option for fullscreen either (or options for anything whatsoever). More importantly, though, the core mechanic of the game is absolutely terrible and makes this borderline unplayable. You hold the left/right arrow keys and let go to jump diagonally at various heights/distances. That's the entirety of the game. Not only is it just complete guess work as to where you will land, but it's plain not fun to interact with.
