A simple, but fun side scrolling star ship shooter with fun visuals, cute characters, and catchy music.
Enjoyable, albeit very short shoot 'em up with a forgettable story. Some players might find it too easy but for a shoot 'em up newbie like me, it was challenging enough. The story is there, but that's all that can be said about it. The branching storyline is an interesting idea, but it's executed poorly. Your choices won't influence the ending in a meaningful way and if you're unlucky, you can unintentionally skip some boss fights, which are probably the best this game has to offer. Flightpath's biggest flaw is how short it is. It feels more like a first episode than a complete game. You barely get a chance to try out some of the weapons and upgrades, before you reach the final level. The game clearly expects you to replay it multiple times to explore different story branches, but at the same time, doesn't make it interesting enough for you to care. That being said, it's an OK game. Not worth the full price, but worth checking out if discounted.
As fun as it felt due to it's unique equipment system balancing.. I had so much trouble beating the sub boss or rather first boss of the final level, the asteroid belt, because for some reason, the boss ship zoomed in on more so often, which funny enough, it doesn't in some online videos I watched to see what I do wrong in that fight and surprisingly, the shots appeared quite slow in those videos while in mine, on normal difficulty, they were way harder to dodge and the boss felt like covering 3/4 of the screen so dodging that with an immense amount of bullets and even fully maximized ship of mine could barely get the boss down over health it's boss meter/HP. So I wonder if the balancing for that boss is just not optimized or if the version I play, a windows 7 one cuz the game supports that, is to blame for that! Plus, and this should DEFINITLY be adressed: When you die once in a story run, you get automatically a sorta sidequest mission, without ever being asked, even if you die say 3 times back to back. No option to disable that choice so learning boss patterns would make it quite annoyingly hard for players as they get interrupting by a sidestory that way! A very double edged idea is also to not auto repair your ship inbetween story segments, like when going from episode 3 to 4 for example. If you survived barely with say 10% of your max HP, then you keep that same amount for it for the next mission! While at it: When you get those weird minor story progression moments through comms in the main story, it blocks part of the view where enemies or yourself are maybe appearing due to them cornering the bottom right corner for this game, which is absolutely unhelpful and it should either be no fire happening from you or the enemies until those minor dialogue exchanges happened or you keep them off the "main screen" where the gameplay appears in, like doing an extra sidebar for it where that dialogue happens so it doesn't hinder the main gameplay segment of this game. Anyway, the game has cool ideas, a sadly bland artstyle, a sadly not worth stimulating to replay story for the characters and also a very lag intensifying snow level due to a too high polygon amount rendering in the background which gave me FF14 1.0 vibes. If you know you know! Oh and also bland OST/Soundtrack, from bosses to stages each! EDIT: Also in stories like Kath, you definitly hear sound effects that feel underwhelming, if not unfitting, for what the game tries to convert. Say the first story cutscene where you see the Syndicate doing damage to a flower shop and you hear light glass blistering... when it appears like they try to destroy her shop for money basically, even the punch that Kath shows feels pretty soft. Sure this could be showing that she isn't super duper strong but when A.J. gets it right with his soundeffects in his story, then how come Kath sounds a bit too cheap with hers in her story? Also some filters let it look like that the game got AI created cutscenes for backgrounds. It's not even hard to find, esp in Kath's first story cutscene before the actual gameplay starts!
