Fleet Defender: The F-14 Tomcat Simulation

This is a golden oldie game from the early 90's. I got in in a package deal so can not complain for the price I got it. Generally love a number of sims from that time, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-111 Stealth fighter and and Gunship 2000 all MicroProse titles and I spent 100 plus of hours playing and enjoying those games. The graphics were as good as they get back then. I think that some of these MicroProse aviation titles re-released need a reboot graphically as the Scenarios, campaigns, and progressing in your career were great. They are not ARMA III or DCS online and they are basically ARMY FPS Games and then study sims when they throw Helicopters/aircraft in. If F-14 was re-released as a upgraded download game. Plug and Play. Where you could and get your up dates as required when you reconnect to the internet. But you did not not have to have internet connectivity to play this. Just like back in the day. This is realistic enough to jump in and play for an hour. I think we need something like this you can take on your lap top and play at the cottage or where ever with out being connected wifi or a road tip in the back of a vehicle or plane. lol I currently play MSFS FSX and MSFS2020 currently and the graphics here are not bad. But it kind of turn off for me. I can read the chunky graphic instruments in this sim. I could fly it. The views are forward, sides, back, are using the key pad. But its not fun now. I was able to fly around in it but just not enjoyable enough to stay. I miss using a POV hat switch to look around. As someone said, good to poke around for a few minutes but frustrating. Though I will say this has potential as the graphics are a little better then most from that period. If your die hard F-14 fan I think you could still enjoy it. As I said before tie in a joystick with a point a of view hat switch to change view and be able to program the keys strokes to the joysticks this game would be still playable and enjoyable. I am not recommending the game because the basic Idea of it is good, but the current play ability is not, It needs a graphics upgrade .The basic engine of the game play does not. I did try the head to head training mission, but but just found the graphics so clunky. I actually simplified the graphic setting to make it cleaner to view.

For the past year I have been founding my way into a number of flight sims featuring both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft and Fleet Defender is definitely the oldest of those I have put my hands on. I never thought that such an old game could have so much appeal to me. The lengths to which this sim goes to get you a feeling of being a naval aviator - and a Tomcat jockey in particular - with its level of customization alone are things that rarely any game comes with these days. Personally I suggest that you are a serious thrill seeker and mean business when it comes to flying in the navy to go for maximum realism settings - that is exactly where this gem shines and it's all after all these years. As much as "Top Gun" was a bad movie that sim gets you exactly where your teenage dream of walking in Maverick's and Goose's shoes comes true and then far beyond - and that is only the beginning. Too bad the version here does not seem to cover the Pacific theater with its Korean and Indian campaigns and the Pacific naval squadrons which come with the Gold FD. I have to edit the review - not that I have changed my mind, but in fact there is the Gold version in the folder with both the Indian and the Korean theaters and campaigns. It's just that the campaigns there are not linked like it was in the Barents Sea and in the Mediterranean.

Эту игру я увидел только в 2025 году .Игра старая но крутая.Можно сказать это полноценный симулятор полета на палубном истребителе ВВС США F14 TOMCAT .Почему купил? Да просто для коллекции на пару раз погонять.Так то летаю в DCS World тоже на F14 . Для тех кто не особо понимает в авиации будет немного сложновато .Из минусов игра на Английском.Есть миссии например выбираешь противника и сколько самолетов в твоем звене будет. При том что игра старая это реально симулятор на максималках тех годов.Я лично когда то давно у друга играл в F-19 это секретный самолет США который в серию не пошел но та игра сильно проще по графону и по восприятию хотя и там тоже пытались сделать симулятор как могли. Сразу маленькая ремарка игра запускается на средних настройках даже на современных компьютерах и там видны резкие пиксели вобщем если зайти в меню и выставить максимальную графику то пиксели станут чуток поменьше хотя кого это вообще пугает из олдов )) Знаете эта вот пикселизация с приятными цветами дает ощущение что ты действительно летчик и чувство какой то неизведанности и романтики авиации. Модельки противников намного лучше выглядят чем в той же F-19 но это ни разу не Warthunder или DCS эта игра она для тех кто хочет атмосферу 90х когда были компы IBM и пиксели. В детстве мне эта игра не попадалась нигде ни разу поэтому ностальгии по конкретной игре я не испытывал,но касаемо атмосферы и музыки игра хорошая.Среди противников можно выбрать очень много самолетов .Выбор вооружения тоже есть сделано немного коряво потому что на иконке самолета плохо видно какие ракеты стоят в какой последовательности приходится вглядываться.Но тут ракеты полноценно сходят и пропадают с самолета как в симуляторе это вам не ACE COMBAT где каждые несколько секунд ракеты спавнятся .Я насчитал 3 вида ракет Sidewinder (ближний бой инфракрасная головка SD на мониторе ) Средняя дистанция Sparrow (SP на мониторе ) Aim 54C Phenix (PH на мониторе -дальний бой )Взлет посадка с Авианосца тоже есть .Есть различные виды и даже анимация пилота наверно в 90е у меня бы от такого челюха бы отпала до колен . Вроде как можно подключить джойстик и даже отдельно педали для управления но вот как синхронизировать современные устройства с игрой я не знаю.Думаю какой нибудь старый аркадный джойстик подошел бы больше. Еще из фишек симулятора то что есть воздушный тормоз по кнопке а так же нужно активировать посадочный крюк он же ГАК иначе за трос авианосца не зацепишься. Очень круто сделано освещение есть и день и ночь и вечер с закатом это все можно в редактируемых миссиях сделать. Можно менять эмблемы VF это ливреи морских эскадрилий например череп и кости на хвостовом оперении . Вид с кабины есть вид с прицела есть но с прицела он какой то корявый то ли не доделали то ли работает не совсем правильно вобщем рамка полностью черная вокруг ИЛС . Конечно полностью она не победит современные симуляторы но внимания к мелочам в этой игре более чем достаточно что бы не считать ее просто аркадой .Помимо моря в игре есть суша с которой могут стрелять зенитки и даже есть прорисованые города правда тоже из пикселей . Так же заранее перед миссией можно настроить положение ваших ведомых самолетов например сверху снизу и сбоку в разных конфигурациях. Всем фанатам TOP GUN и Гуся с Мавериком рекомендую заиметь в колекцию .По скидочке разумеется .

This game is better than Maverick in Top Gun 1&2 plus Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder. It's like Tom Cruise to the 4th power.

Great Retro Sim - A bit touchy with rubbish joysticks but other than that great one!

Tolles Spiel! Ich habe Fleet Defender damals sehr intensiv gespielt und auch heute noch ist die Faszination für diese fliegenden Waffe ungebrochen. Sehr schön ist die nicht zu komplizierte Handhabung des AWG Radars. ABER: Bitte bitte bitte, wenn ihr so ein Spiel verkauft, dann konfiguriert die DOSBOX gefälligst richtig! Vor allem die Soundblaster-Werte sollten stimmen. Der DMA Kanal ist auf 1 in der DOSBOX konfiguriert, aber das Spiel erwartet den Kanal 3, dadurch funktioniert die Sprachausgabe nicht und den Joystick einfach auf automatisch zu stellen hat mir noch bei keinem DOS Flugsimulator geholfen. Hier am besten 4AXIS verwenden und die Achsen 3 und 4 tauschen.
