If you're looking for a good world war two pacific naval war game this isn't it. On one hand there's not much $20 gets you these days, but if given the choice of buying this for $20 or just losing $20 in a parking lot...at least the parking lot loss isn't taking any space on the hard drive. UI is clunky, the tutorial prompts show up on top of the information prompts that you need to read to get past segments of the tutorial. Combat is bland and lacks any meaningful tactical input. I'm unsure who would want to put any time into this game when there are better options out there at similar price points. The game is basic and I feel as though playing Risk or Axis and Allies would be more enjoyable and engaging. I promised myself I'd quit buying early access games, but I got giddy at a sale on a genre I typically enjoy. Lesson learned...again.
cannot center map default position is lower right of monitor cannot get map to stay in center of screen. would not recommend.
PC Version of Victory in the Pacific. Old School classic.
This game is based on (and faithful to) the brilliant boardgame "Victory in the Pacific". I have almost 100 hours in game, as I was very active in beta and early access, playtesting and feeding back to the developers, who for a long time were very active and responsive. It pains me to give this a negative review, as it has such potential. However there is still a number of things that need improvement, most notably the AI, which is OK for learning the game, but that is all. The developers have not responded since Dec 2022 and the game appears dead.
I have played this designers games for over 25 years. They make excellent games with their specialty of strategic/grand strategic. Normally I don't play till they are out of early access, But I just finished a couple of books over 600 pages each on the Pacific. I think when it is completed we will have a real winner and maybe an Atlantic version and maybe a DLC that combines both into a two Ocean war campaign?
I always wanted a computer version of the AH Victory in the Pacific. It was my very first wargame and has been one of my all-time favorites. This computer game captures the ViP rules and play very well. It would be great to have a few new advanced rules added in. Stuff the board game didn't have like more comprehensive air combat with specific aircraft types. But overall I would recommend this game.
Fleet Commander is a game that simulates major naval conflicts or campaigns on a strategic scale. The games feature a comprehensive array of major surface combat ships in a granular, yet straightforward, strategic simulation of large-scale conflicts that span entire wars. Players are also tasked with managing air forces, convoys, marine contingents, and submarines. Control of key sea areas is crucial to achieving ultimate victory. The game has different phases and is played at a strategic level, with sets of playing cards that add complexity and realism, incorporating factors such as diplomacy, weather, land war operations, and other events. Players take control of sea areas, moving ships and fleets to different areas of the board. This game is based on an Avalon digital game, boasting a highly accurate database, faithful ship sketches, 3D models, and actual historical photos, as well as a wealth of in-game information. The graphic style is well-suited for a board game, and the gameplay is engaging, providing a sense of strategic planning for military operations in the Pacific Theater. A simple yet effective set of game mechanisms focuses on taking control of key sea areas, with straightforward battle mechanisms that handle various aspects of naval warfare, including gunnery exchanges, submarines and ASW, missile and airborne attacks, command control, and electronic warfare. Battles are decided through dice rolling, with a line of Japanese and American forces attacking in order, determined by dice rolls. The game features a seemingly small map with many key characteristics, particularly bases and placement of land-based air. Even deciding where to repair ships is a crucial decision, weighing the options of sending them back to the West Coast or Pearl, which might be at repair capacity. Some minor issues include the front line ships being partially obscured by the "choose air/surface, bonus" box in the battle round screen, which could be resolved by moving the icon/counters upwards. Additional optional rules, such as Task Force searching, hiding, and landing, as well as damage control for some Allied/IJN carriers, would be welcome additions. Overall, the game is a great representation of World War II in the Pacific Theater, and Avalon digital has done an excellent job. I highly recommend it. 8/10
