About
Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War is a grand tactical combat simulation on the Cold War battlefield. As the force Commander, you will plan and then issue orders and Standard Operating Procedures to your battalion, brigade, or regimental forces, shaping the fight by maneuver and your intent. Your forces will engage the enemy in rendered real-world map locations. Each hex is 500m of militarily significant terrain on maps covering 20km x 15km or greater locations across the German area of battle. Each battle can last 4 to 24 hours of in-game time. Your troops will meet their foes at any time of day and in any realistic weather conditions.

This latest entry into the iconic Flashpoint Campaigns series features the largest number of Cold War scenarios and campaigns, encompassing the highest number of nations ever included in a single new game release. In addition, for the first time in this series, it includes Air Assault as well as other new features described below.
The game's engine is based on asynchronous WEGO turns. Players issue orders and then watch a variable amount of time unfold on the battlefield. They then issue or adjust orders to react to what has happened as they execute their battle plan to outmaneuver and outthink their enemy's battle plan.

Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War is a deep simulation of combat operations where forces are arranged in maneuver units of companies, platoons, and sections of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, infantry squads and teams, recon forces, engineers, air-defense and anti-tank systems, helicopters, and more. As the Commander, the player must use available off-map assets like long-range artillery, rockets, or airstrikes as force multipliers in the battle space. The Commander may be faced with the specter of using chemical or nuclear weapons to support their forces on the map and win the day.
In this complex battlespace, the player's efforts are constantly tested by modeled features such as Electronic Warfare, Air Superiority, and Realistic Weather. You'll also need to consider Line of Sight and Fire, Terrain and Elevation, Smoke and Mines, and human factors like training, morale, and readiness. To help you master the situation and understand your force's capabilities, the game provides a variety of information dialogs, map overlays, and range rings.

Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War is a data-rich simulation where each nation has information on National Characteristics, Command Parameters, and Orders of Battle. Data Tables are packed with era-specific equipment and troops. Weapon Systems of the time, such as guns, missiles, precision munitions, small arms, and much more, are comprehensively modeled.
The game allows players to create their own scenarios and campaigns, modify game data, artwork, and sound effects as they see fit. All these modding capabilities are supported by detailed documentation.

Over 100 Cold War scenarios in total. 60+ independent scenarios and 10 campaigns, both in solo national efforts or with allied nations.
Covers Germany on 80 plus maps and an extensive selection of military equipment from 1980 to 1989: United States, Great Britain, France, Canada, Belgium, West Germany, Russia (Soviet Union), East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia.
Several Tutorials (scenarios and documentation) that look at the basic, intermediate, and advanced features of the game system, so players can learn at their own pace.
New Tactical Transport feature (includes Air Assaults) for moving forces with helicopters or trucks around the battlefield in a coordinated and planned way.
Every scenario has multiple computer player battle plans for replayability, which, coupled with the game’s base computer player, which reacts and deviates as needed from those plans, means every battle is dynamic and different.
Refined unit SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and order queuing with an improved user interface for both new and experienced players.
Illumination rounds light up the night skies and help see enemies.
Improved AI and UI for formation moves and unit behaviors like withdrawal and target selections.
Refined control and improved UI for resupply of ammunition and setting of critical munitions to resupply.
Improved spotting and combat models
New and refined information dialogs and overlays provide important details to the players.

A solid hex-based war game that has enough players that I can actually engage with a thinking human. I still haven't figured out the password/private match thing. This game gives you the combat-focused land war with semi-modern units/kit and clearly way more complexity than I am currently taking advantage of.
Only recently got into TBS games but got to say this game scratches an itch that I didn't know I had. The learning curve I feel is just right to where your not steam rolling the AI and they actually have a chance to fight back even with a good understanding of the game. Has a nice verity of units. Love the ability to play both sides in the scenarios. The campaigns are very detailed and challenging. Very nice polish and refinement. Very easy on the system also. Cons: No USMC "Joking" Nothing I can really think of. Suggestion if Possible: In the scenario/campaign editor would love a option like Broken Arrow with the Aircraft to setup loadouts if its not already available in the presets. IE F-16C with the standard Vulcan but Carrying only Napalm loadout. P.S. Would rate 10/10 cause the bones are there and would love to see what comes in the future!!!!!
I'm still not entirely sure what's going on when I play the game, but as far as hex and counter wargames go, this one feels like one of the most responsive on the market. An AI that isn't dead-set on a single plan as programmed by the scenario developer is always a rare and welcome find in these highly detailed strategic simulations! I do feel like there is something to be missed in the lack of procedurally-generated scenarios and campaigns, forging one's own way through the third world war in a personal campaign rather than a static, designed set of missions, but at the same time, this game requires far more balancing and tuning in terms of scenario creation that it would be quite difficult to get a generator set up just right. Still, I do think it would be an amazing addition. I'd pay a pretty penny for a working scenario/campaign generator DLC, hint hint to the developers. Oh, while I'm on the topic of scenarios, workshop support would be outstanding as well! The matrix games forums /work/ and all, but they can be finicky with uptime issues and download speeds, as well as just general usability at times. Workshop'd be great to get more scenarios onboard. Still, it's getting good updates, more content seems to be on the horizon, and for what price you pay you get a depth and breadth of information and tactical enjoyment that can't easily be found elsewhere. I jive with it.
Hexs' be bussin'
Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War is a limited time frame game ( as of this review ) of a period of time in 1989 for Germany. The game reflects a lot of the tactical knowledge that was planned for use during that time. I would recommend searching for some tutorial videos for even the grognards out there. There is a somewhat steep learning curve of the game UI mechanics, HOWEVER, once you learn them, things get pretty good and interesting afterwards. Getting victories in FCCW can be a challenge and "marginal" may become your new watch word. Definitely play the Tutorial missions more than once. OPFOR can change up on yo a bit so nothing is set in stone and the AI for OPFRO can throw a few curves when you are not looking. I would advise getting the companion game Flashpoint Campaigns: Southern Storm as well. FCSS covers more of the German " underbelly" territory of a possible Cold War gone hot, that includes some NBC tactics to be on the look out for. Overall the games are pretty well developed. heir Discord channel is lively with developers reading and taking notes of what and how players post up in the various channels.
This extraordinary game simulates a hypothetical invasion of Germany by the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War. It is the latest iteration of the Flashpoint Campaigns Series and as such represents the result of years of extensive research and engine improvement. Like the prior games, Cold War features an "asynchronous WEGO" System in which you first issue commands to your units (for instance, assault, march, hold, screen, tank assault, Infantry fighting vehicle screen and fight, etc.) and then press start to watch your units interact with the enemy throughout the battlefield. Since I got the game on the day of its release, I have so far played it more than a hundred hours. I usually play as the Warsaw Pact because I like the concept of Soviet Operational Maneuver Groups in which main battle tanks, Infantry fighting vehicles, artillery and air defense elements move and operate together as combined arms units. I like everything about this game: Cold War as the subject, WEGO system, operational scale, great maps and unit graphics. I highly recommend it.
Great game with many well thought out and in-depth mechanics that make the game very fun to play and often a good challenge.
This is a very fun AND more importantly accessible wargame. Most wargames, other than command ops 2, haven't stuck with me. Bad UIs, IGOUGO, bad manuals. This game is the opposite. Good clean UI with accessible information not hidden behind multiple menus. WEGO system makes MP and vs AI engaging every time. The online manual is very accessible and has very good information. You can get very deep in this game or play at a more surface level. I started playing a campaign right after finishing the first scenario. It is not too intimidating and it is ACCESSIBLE! That is the most important thing to me, big thanks to the devs for making such a fun and detailed game.
Love this game, this is one of my favorite showcases of the fog of war. Acting on imperfect information in the OODA loop is enthralling, mistakes will get made and you will have to deal with that for better and worse. I personally play on grognard difficulty because I think it makes the best challenge and lends itself best to emergent gameplay that way.
Best so far, really great PBEM game
