I've been a StarCraft fan since the demo released in 1998, and I've also loved Warcraft 2 and Age of Empires 1 and 2. Five Nations definitely caters to fans of StarCraft in its atmospheric isolation, alien technology and methodical gameplay. Five Nations is a single-player exclusive experience, with an excessively-long campaign and the option to do simple skirmishes. The voice acting and story are both quite mediocre, but they serve as an adequate vehicle for the campaign. The graphics are simply sleek, and the fact that this is a 2-person project is astounding. It plays like StarCraft, for better and worse. It lacks the smoother micro options that more recent titles like StarCraft 2 have, and this game is very slow. I've seen some wish for a game speed slider to slow down the game; I personally want one to speed things up. But it does have satisfying combat with the opportunity to build interesting army compositions and micromanage your units. I also like some of the unique twists here, especially with the cargo ships; that leads to interesting resource collection I haven't seen elsewhere. All-in-all, this is no AAA title, and its hard to recommend even as an indie game. It caters to a very niche audience, basically RTS players of the 90s. But if you're in that niche, I believe you'll be very satisfied. I sure am! Looking forward to the next title!
Basically if you love StarCraft series - this is a worthy grandson of it. Campaign is nice and chunky with a lot of different factions and units to try. Good fun :D
Overall I wouldn't recommend it, as it doesn't hold up against others in the genre that you are better off (re)playing. Definitely some fun elements here and I do like to see more RTS games, this one just needed a little more polish than it got. I'd recommend you look at Starcraft, Homeworld, Chaos Galaxy, Sins of a Solar Empire, Command & Conquer, WarWind, Spellforce, or Warhammer Gladius instead. +Art style +Music +Voiced +Classic RTS style +Resource harvesting +Variety of factions, units, buildings +Variety of upgrades to research +Carriers +Control groups, building/action queues +Amount of content/missions +Campaign for each faction +Skirmishes -Barebones settings -No zoom -Key rebinding only through config file document -Small UI, hard to read/distinguish units -Lacking animations -Can't open menu w/keyboard -Can only move, not cancel, rally points -Need 2 supply chains per resource (collector + harvester) -Hard to tell background structures from interactable -UI blocks map corner/selection -Weak story -Very slow pacing -Low quality voice, stilted/monotone -Lacking tutorial, no faction info -Hidden menus, options under avatar -In-mission options different from main menu options -Patrol routes and action queues not shown visually -Control groups not shown visually -Can't select faction to play, have to play in order
For 4 Euros this is so so worth. A LOT of content fot that price the campaign alone is 20 Euroes + EDIT: Ive completed a little more than half of the camp now. not including dlc. i can say the story really moves in the second act im curious to find out what happends, the dynamic of the camp is very cool since u follow the redline from 5 perspectives and i for once cant really tell where and how this will go down. I WILL SAY THIS! if you are not skilled with RTS i wouldnt advice playing on hard since the campaign have some really challangeing missions that will require some restarts untill you figure the strategy out. but once you do its a breeze. you can turtle if u have the patient untill the ai runs out of money but i even that can be hard unless you have good micro. since u need to pull units etc. For some reference ive been top 50 worldwide in CoH2 1v1. and this is not an easy game. but you have lower dif if you just want the interesting story! i will highly recommend anyone looking for a hard camp i know i have since this game does not hold your hand which i love! Will update further! but so far 10/10
I would like to write a good review, the game has potential, but the problems, bugs and other things ruin the whole game. Even though the game is being repaired, new bugs appear. The game has a nice story, even though most people from the future and aliens suffer from baldness, and the moment where there should be a movie is just text, sound, and pictures, and the text is too fast. The game is missing many important things, especially settings. You can't even adjust the buttons and you don't know what the buttons are for and the escape key is useless. During gameplay, the settings are the same, but in the menu they are different or there are fewer. It would also be good to have a description of the damage, not just the blood and armor. And not so small icons for buildings that look similar to other races but should be different. A zoom button or a quick save, things that have been around for decades. The gameplay is terribly slow. It's very slow to build an army, but you can lose it very quickly, they're not very durable. The handling of the ships is sometimes clumsy and you can even see it in the enemy, you constantly have to control it even for the smallest things, sometimes they can't hit the target, they are not accurate, they don't maneuver properly or they move to one side, and even in the enemy, but not so bad. There are bugs everywhere. If you click on the profile, the game doesn't start. If you press escape, the mouse breaks. The save system is not reliable. The game starts to lag for no reason, making it even slower and worse to control. The level of difficulty plays from easy to normal or quite difficult for no reason. Example 14 mission easy to normal. 15 quite difficult. 16 normal but the computer is useless and stupid. The game has many missions and in such a bad condition it is unplayable. Or at least it kills all the fun. I'll wait for them to fix it, which is unlikely to happen, the game looks like early access.
This is a love letter to the most classic 90s RTS games. Beautiful pre-rendered graphics with easy to follow but difficult to master gameplay. Map editor makes for additional fun as well. For those of you old enough to remember, this is very reminiscent of the pre-alpha footage of Starcraft, which was very much "Warcraft in Space". The only downside is that there's no multiplayer, as this is a game that I would absolutely love to play with others. Hopefully the devs continue to improve on this format for future games!
This is a hidden gem for sure, I really wish I had played this earlier though even now it is a great game and fun to play - so many races to play and such a huge campaign
awesome game this is something like starcraft with only air units but with full roster of them plus 5 nations instead of 3: 1 protoss like, 1 zerg like and 3 variations on humans like also it has big campaign and skirmish of course this is indie game on strange web-javascript-engine so maximum 2560x1440 that looks blurry on big 4k screen but gameplay still great and developers even give possibility to select keyboard control scheme from several available options - even some AAA-games missing this ps. game has active pause and it's on F8 for some reasons, but game don't tell you this
This game is a hidden gem Short version, its flawed but amazing story and easiest 17 freedom dollas i ever spent. 8/10 Long version. -The good: -Good story -Starcraft clone but different and its a good thing -5 Races and diverse enough to feel different -Intresting maps -Decent balance -Alot of passion Stuffs that can be better: - Difficulty could get better, story mode should be a cake walk (Give a huge amount of resources or fully upgrade ur unites) but right now its pretty much the same and newbs will be stomped - Specialists unites needs some balancing where some are real strong and others very weak - Sylas faction feels abit underpowered - Fighters could use abit of balance, if they are on unpassable terrain they should not be able to shoot as thats so toxic towards your poor undefenable workers and you pretty much need more fighters than the enemy all the time just hover around ur workers as defencive turrents are windy eyed Critical issues: - Microstutters and lagg if you have alot of pop - Ultra wide and Superwide support are not really there so you need to use stretched lower ress - No disable of unit responses, i dont need to hear that i produce my #541 sporeling each one of them, I do not need to hear im attacked by each lazer that hits my ships in a fight when im not looking. Even with the flaws thats easily fixable, i still recommend the game i havent been able to stop playing it. Its fun and im addicted to the story, if you loved starcraft 1, your gonna like this one. Price + gaming love + gameplay = 8/10 Easiest 17 freedom dollars of my life !
It like starcraft in space.
