first days of atlantis is yet another islanders-like, so a simplified and more puzzly city builder, on hex-based maps in this case, and only one per run, no island-hopping, making it less ephemeral. also less polished and more buggy, so just about recommendable. there's normal and long game, the difference being... no idea. no in-game explanation, they play the same way, didn't notice anything. maybe it's the world size, but that doesn't necessary mean a longer game. the brief optional tutorial teaches the absolute basics, has an annoying typewriter effect too, luckily without any sound. buildings and other placeables come in the form of cards. tooltips reveal what they do, which is mostly generating gold, collect enough to unlock more structures. there's a buggy auto-sort setting to group the same cards together, has to be turned on again after every game. mouseover on tiles also provides info, but it's only whether it's fertile or not for more agricultural benefits, terrain types don't matter at all, sand, stone, dirt or whatever are just cosmetic. I would've liked placed buildings to bring up the same info as their card, not just the provided amount, radius and icon. yes, I can tell a house apart from some wheat, but it takes a while to remember what should be placed next to what. the 'i' button toggles all the benefits from every tile, no need to individually mouseover everything one by one. there's no timer or turn limit, but it's essentially a turn-based affair. each placement counts as one (except platforms), after which all the placed things pay out. the game desperately needs a coin animation toggle, it's really annoying to see and hear it after every. single. building. just increase my gold instantly. quests are also a thing, build what they want to get more cash and cards. there are 3 active ones at a time, and in such situations I always prefer a dismiss option in case it's something I can't (or can't be bothered) to do, yet it takes up a spot. no such option here. placement location doesn't matter at least, so if (and that's often a big if) you have the required buildings, they're not hard. the run ends when you run out of cards, then you can compare scores on the leaderboards and try again in a random new world. progress is saved when you quit, but as usual, finished worlds aren't kept because no dev in the genre can be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to make such a basic thing happen. coins are kept and used for unlocking more color schemes that can be toggled individually, so they won't show up in your runs. controls aren't explained anywhere, but it's largely mouse-based and completely non-rebindable. wasd/arrows move the map (the mouse can do that too at the edge of the screen), mouse wheel zooms while also tilting the camera (not that great), holding it rotates the view. right click cancels the currently selected card. the music is nice but of all the games I've played in the genre, this looks the worst. I don't normally care about the graphics, but some of the fonts and a few color themes are simply ugly as ♥♥♥♥. what's really cool though, besides individual toggles for themes, is people and animals appearing and moving around as your domain keeps expanding. menu navigation is bad. open windows act as if they're not there, the cursor highlighting stuff in the background, and in the main menu moving the mouse also moves the scenery/camera. as annoying as it is nauseating, and turning it off in the settings doesn't make it stop. mouseover can bring up more choices that don't go away while you're already somewhere else, and the options menu has 'options' and 'credits' instead of having the latter in the main menu because it has nothing to do with options. speaking of, there are separate volume settings, resolutions in a pull-down menu, windowed mode toggle and languages, also available while playing. photo mode hides the ui, as usual. no graphics settings, though to be fair, it couldn't look a lot less appealing anyway. I enjoyed my time with the game about as much as with others in this genre, but it's not something to pay full price for. it's the second most expensive one of its kind (after dorfromantik) but doesn't offer more or much different, it's buggy and you can buy multiple others for the price of this. if you're not into more of the same, might as well pick another one, but I'd rather try different coats of paint instead of replaying stuff. picked it up at 75% off, good enough, but anything more than half price would be foolish even if it got polished a bit.
First Days of Atlantis is a fun and relaxing hex-based city-builder that's somewhat similar to Hexia, Dorformatik, Zen World, Terra Nil and Take Town to name a few. In this game, you're given a handful of cards to place on the hex map. The cards can be actual buildings like houses or villas, but they can also contain platforms which will allow you to build on shallow waters, or farm plots (can also be plantation/sheep). Due to its synergistic component, the game has a strategic element in it, forcing you to maximize the amount of money you earn by placing each building as optimally as you can. Every time you reached a "income milestone", you'll then be able to choose one new card pack out of three. The game also offers quests on the side - literally, they are on the left side of the screen - that when completed, will unlock new card packs and hence, new cards a.k.a. buildings, allowing you to build more complicated towns. ------------
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5VSVhxZgpI Note that I kinda ignored the quests when I first started playing and only focused on getting more money per turn. -------------
Pros
+ Relaxing, fun and quick games + Randomly-generated maps and the game has four map types (might be more though!) + Strategic gameplay, thanks to its building synergy component as well as unique tiles + The graphics aren't exactly impressive but what's amazing is that the building design of houses/villas will change depending on how much money the building is paying (likely, in taxes) to you. + Photo mode! Cannot rotate the map but you can zoom in and out. + Nice variety of "build" cards
Feedback/Suggestions
- Is it not possible to complete all quests? I noticed that I keep getting stuck at the quest that requires 2x Harbour and 2X Fishery cards but I can't seem to get them from my "level-up" packs. Maybe tweak the level-up packs to offer packs that somewhat match the ongoing quests? - Tool tip error - sometimes, I get the tool tip for "House" when I hover over a "Villa" card - Would be nice to have random events to spice things up a bit. After enough rounds, I guess I've already kinda memorized the quests since they are the same in every playthrough. - More unique tiles? Like fish-boost tiles for fisheries? - Maybe make use of the tree tiles to set up an entirely new lumber industry? - Bigger maps for longer play? - More challenging maps? - Allow the player to rotate the map so we could take better screenshots of the towns we've built?
Overall
I absolutely love this game! It's a simple city-builder; is super easy to get into, and the game is indeed relaxing to play, as advertised. I only wish for larger maps so I could keep expanding my town, and also the map rotate function, so I can take nicer screenshots. Great mix of City Builder and highscore hunt. I especially like the little details like boats, people and sheep (which you can pet btw.) that move around and make the city you build feel alive.
Very cool game, it is similar (a bit) like ISLANDERS that I really liked. great game!
Very relaxing game with beautiful music, great atmosphere and gameplay.
This is a fun and relaxing strategy game. You're given a hand/deck of cards, and place down buildings. Buildings give gold based on terrain bonuses and adjacencies, and you get more cards when you finish quests, and also when you reach certain income threshholds. The round ends when you run out of cards. Look, I had some honest suggestions for this game when it was still in demo/early access and the devs actually listened! Either they were on the same page I was with further features (I suggested terrain modifiers and stuff, that got in), or I'm just that awesome. .....that and they put in otters. OTTERS! THE FISHERMEN HAVE TO DEAL WITH OTTERS EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I don't have a problem. Okay, I do. That problem is lack of otters. A lack that First Days of Atlantis does not have. :3
English + Deutsch You have to think a bit about where to place which cards in order to get as many points as possible and also how to manage to reach the current goal so that you get a new pack of cards. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well so that you end up with just a few points but either way, this game is a lot of fun and a nice pastime that you can play several times because it is very varied and always different than what you played before.
It's a good game for in between, hunting archives is fun even if there's one I'm still missing. The graphics are kept simple but randomized, the game worlds seem to be generated randomly aswell. The hardest thing about the game is that there is no going back. It therefore makes sense to write down a few arrangements on a piece of paper beforehand. The quests are a good side mission, but the reward for completing them feels too weak in some cases. I would like to see buildings that are a little more complex and that the bonuses are listed better and more consistently. However, the game still has a few areas for improvement: The coins gain sound is very anoying and breakes the relaxation. It doesn't keep the mouse in the game, so it often happens that you tab on your 2/3 monitor from the game. The downward movement is too aggressive, sometimes I just want to select one card and the camera whizzes down already.
