This app was supposed to be a shiny distraction while fans waited for the real game to be released. Instead, it has become "a long wait for a train don't come." Allow me go a little more in depth about how I've become increasingly disillusioned about the development team: 1. The collectible card system runs on the Coupon Collector's Dilemma. When I pointed this out to developers, the response I got was basically, "it's optional; people don't *have* to do it." Which is accurate, but a cynical approach to the idea of cultivating a loyal fandom. 2. At one point, the Cortex was getting regular updates. Currently, my feed is showing the "latest news" was back in September. I've seen a few additional posts outside the Cortex. Maybe they've abandoned that in favor of their Facebook Feed. Which negates the whole idea of the BDH drive (which was supposed to be the "inside track" for in game news and updates.) 3. It's been years since this game was announced. But, like George RR Martin books, the release dates are vague and keep getting moved. I'm no longer confident it will be released. So, I don't think it's unreasonable of me, at this time, to be disappointed and disillusioned. Your opinion may differ. Which is fine. You can keep waiting for that train.

The Firefly Online Cortex was a nice distraction, for a time. Intended as a companion app for the forthcoming release of Firefly Online. There are some nice banjo tunes, reminiscient of the Firefly series. You're given the opportunity to spent some money, in support of the team, developing Firefly Online. For 5$ you'll get to be a "Big Damn Hero". Sounds shiny. For your money, you'll be able the access a devblog, which has rather been neglected, if not desserted. When there is a post, its saddly more fluff, than any real information. Also you'll get access to a map of 'The Verse', where you are able to do Trade Runs. Meaning clicking on three planets on the map, to get a loot box. In this box are cards, with pictures from the series. Collecting these cards rewards you some in-game fluff for the game. One run gets you 50 Brownie Points, the in-app currency. The random generator hates everyone the same, as the devs pointed out. So you can get as high as 500.000 Brownie Points, or higher, and still be left wanting for some cards, to finish your set. But you'll also presented with the oppurtunity to buy card packs, in different price categories. If you're easy to be enraged, you should be careful, as these packs also can tend to give you duplicates of cards you'll already have.
Update: The Big Damn Hero Package is, as of now, not more available.
The game, Firefly Online, for which this is the companion app, has been delayed, from a release in 2013, to 2014 and has now been stated to be back in alpha stages. Beta TBA. Release TBA. As mentioned, the APP is a nice distraction, no harm in trying it out, or even spending the 5$, if you're not expecting too much. The official, and only, channel of communication from the Devs, is their Facebook page. The page is managed by a 'community manager', not related to the development process, posting in-character as a Ship's Mech, which may be entertaining for the first dozen posts of mostly evasive nature. There has been some unrest, whether the devs are capable of finishing what they started. Support tickets are going unanswered for months. Inconvenient threads and posts encountered a tendency to be deleted. If this is still the case, or has changed, due to backlash, I'm not able to say, as I ceased visiting the page. Facebook as official channel is another thing.
Update: There will be no more updates on the Facebook page. Cited reason: "Management has decided since our input is being so rejected that we will not update this page anymore."
This review is a thumbs down, as for the way communication and the 'transparent development' is handled by Spark Plug Interactive and QMx. As of August 2014 all official channels of information have been closed down, or are laying bare. The official page is down. The publisher, Qmx, is not listing the Firefly Online project anymore on their company page. Inquiries about FFO are completely ignored from the publisher side. The developer, SPG, has been confirmed to state, that they are not allowed to comment on the situation. There have been several attempts by people to contact Fox for comment, but to no avail. Which is maybe not all too surprising, looking at the track record of Fox and their handling of the Firefly Franchise. More and more, Qmx gives the impression to be not much better than Fox. There have been a growing number of folks stating, that there is a blatant disregard for their customers. Also, the deletion of critical inquiries have been reported. While still maintaining hope, one might say, it is looking rather dim...
They got a bunch of us to donate to the game with promise of us donors to have a shiny town of our own with a statue of us in the game then bailed with our money quietly. It was a big train heist and the fact steam still has it up shows they support theft by frauds. They shut down secretly and are NOT producing firefly online. Our money should be refunded or they should be locked up.
Update III: The servers appear to be offline indefinitely so you can't even get past the start menu or see the map of the verse anymore. Update II: This project may not be completely dead but it's as good as, and reportedly most content of this to-be companion app doesn't even work for new users, so It doesn't has Nathan Fillion in it anymore, which automatically gave it an 11/10 on the first edition of my review. I still have a glimmer of hope they get out from under whatever stone (or rumored lawsuit) they're under and eventually get the main game we hoped for released. But the Firefly curse seems to be alive and kicking. Pretty disappointing. This is (was?) actually the Companion App for an upcoming (???!!!) game. The only actual gameplay available in the game, you used to be able to purchase for $5 and you had some exploration missions to do on the map of the verse and you got rewards in the form of cards and badges/items for the future whole game. Other than that, this was barely a preview for some aspects of the game menus, news and profile management. Nonetheless the $5 purchase content was worth it if you're a fan of the series and/or were going to pick up the game when they released it "in the summer" (probably meant summer of 2037). Be a gorram hero and... I don't know, become a billionaire and have a freaking Firefly game made once and for all. “If you can't run, you crawl. If you can't crawl-- you find someone to carry you.”
First off any negetive review soley based on the fact this is NOT FFO, all I can say is learn to read. While I am not entirely sure what this "App" is doing on Steam (Though they have a lot of things that shouldnt be on steam now), they are very clear on the what this is. This is making an account to reserve your name now and an information hub that the more you use the more "Brownie Points" you earn. The BP are used for FFO in game currency .. it does not say if it is regular or bought with cash currency but either way you are not paying to earn BP if you want to. The Big Damn Hero package, for $5, adds a special quest which will showcase a statue of you in a town which others can see. To some people that is already worth it. You also get access to the Verse map and trading game. Essentially point and click for trivia information on each planet/moon. While doing trade runs a character from the show will ask you to go to a certain planet/moon that you need to find (They give you directions so its not hard, and you can click on hint which costs you some time off your run but adds a pulsating glow around your target). There is a daily and weekly run for chest rewards, and a basic practice run that is untimed and gives you 50 BP each go that you can do as much as you like. The chests contain cards (and BP) which you collect for FFO digital items and if you get extras you can trade them in for more BP. You can also buy card packs if you choose for a couple bucks that is a seperate purchase from Big Damn Hero perks (You can buy the packs regardless of buying Big Damn Hero). So basically if you want to call this a money grab fine. What developer isnt trying to earn money and gauge interest? The difference here is they are very specific on what you get without being sketchy at all .. everything they say this is before any spending and promise you IF you spend is delivered with the obvious exception of anything you do now towards FFO in game rewards is subject to the game actually coming out. Good time killer and safe for work!
This isn't a game, but it is a convenient hub for all things relating to the impending Firefly MMO. The game has been in production for a while, so fingers crossed there, but the hub is a positive sign that the game will release. Basically, the hub has an account page, a news page (which presently is the most active section), a trading post (where at this time, you can only buy the upgrade membership for like $5), a verse map (not available for free members), and a ship view. It's a little disappointing that a lot of features will hide behind a paywall for a free game, but it is what it is. For Firefly fans, it will probably be an easy decision to pony up the $5 to get full access. Either way, this Cortex seem like it will be useful and it is definitely the easiest way to keep track of the games development and I'm sure will have more options available to make it viable once the game is up an running. For now, use it as an information source. If you intend to play the game, I think downloading the Cortex is likely a must. If you don't have any intention of playing the game, this is probably a waste of space. Based on its intent however, I give it a thumbs up but no actual rating beyond that.
For a long a time, I had a positive review up for the Firefly Online Cortex. Alas, over the last month, the communication of the developer has died down to a crawl. That the official channel is a Facebook page doesnt't help things. At the moment, people are waiting months for answers on support tickets, known issues aren't being adressed. What was intended as a supporting app for coming Firefly Online, has degraded into a pseudo card collecting clicker app. One where the chances are inherently stacked against you. Even with being card packs, and not a few of them, your chances are dim, to gain those fun perks of collecting 10 duplicates of every of the over 100 cards. The 'VIP' information, that you can get for buying the 'Big Damn Hero' perk from inside the app, fail to provide substantial information, for where the development is at, if it will be anywhere near release or if the studio, which has been developing Match 3 and other mobile games for the last years, will be pushin the release for another year. This has the feeling of history repeating. In the last days critical voices have been banned and deleted form the official facebook page. Whereas no new information has been derived from the developers. At the same time, the dev has a kickstarter funding game in the making, an action runner game, which has been delayed multiple times too, including about half a year of radio silence. The devs tend to visit an inofficial fan community, where they share talk about the state of the Cortex and FFO. It sounds all shiny and well. They can sure talk the talk, but there's growing distrust if they can walk the walk. The last, inofficial and unverified, news, is that Firefly Online is apparently on hold, as per a post from the developer on a closed community fan page. Update August 2016 No news on the situation. No comment from the publisher Qmx. Or from Fox. This paints a bleak picture for Firefly Online. There's still hope. But official information would go a long way. Several people tried contacting Qmx and Fox. But to no avail. :( Update January 2017 No news. Official content taken offline. No sign of life from the developer, or support on any of their self published products. Update May 2017 No news. Official inquiries are ignored. There are rumours abound about a gag order in place preventing involved parties to release information. No confirmation for these rumours are to be found. There is no activity on any product or page from the developer. All support has been dropped. There is no sign that the developer does exist in more then name only at this point in time.
New Edit: Now that the server for the app has been taken down after Spark Plug Games' closure, the entire program has ZERO functionality. ... All one can do is ... stare at the login screen. Original Review: It's only useful as a curiosity at this point. %75 of the app is broken and cannot be activated now that the website it ties to is abandoned. It was meant to be a promotional mini-game for funding the Firefly Online MMO, but the parent game was killed before launch when the publisher was unable to strike a good licence renewal deal, and time and money ran out. *sigh* The in-app purchase shop was deactivated a while back, and the developers have moved on to other games. Perhaps in the future someone will re-licence the game rights and a Firefly MMO will come out! (3rd times the charm, right?) Amusingly enough, the registration part of the app still works, but don't expect any updates or news to arrive after any date past 2015, and the server that hosted the videos seems to be gone as well.
The Cortex is your ultimate destination for Firefly Online news and information. This companion app is a great way to stay current with the game’s progress. Really pity the news seems to have stopped, I feel like many cheated and duped. I really wish they had lived up to their claims pitty they didnt and to Quote Jayne "If wishes were horse's we'd all be eating steak". I would tell any respectable FireFly fan not to bother with this App dont be lured into the pit with shiny baubles The developers may have had good intentions but we know what the road to hell is paved with To Quote Wash "Hoban “Wash” Washburne playing with a toy dinosaur: Yes. Yes. This is a fertile land and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land! And we will call it… this land! Wash as Ceratosaurus: I think we should call it your grave! Wash as the other dinosaur: Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal! Wash as Ceratosaurus: Ha ha ha! Mine is an evil laugh! Now die! Wash as the other dinosaur: Oh no god! Oh, dear God in heaven!" try substituting these words. Toy Dinosaur = Fans, Ceratosaurus = QMx/Spark plug games/FOX This Land = FireFly Online / The Cortex
I started playing this when it released and was super hyped! I mean, they got the entire cast to submit voice clips for the game! But alas, it was never meant to be... It's 2021 and this game just disappeared. No updates, no phone calls, no Dear John letter. So, even if your love for Firefly burns as bright as mine does... You're only setting yourself up for disappointment. Again.
