Fields of Mistria is an incredible game. From its soundtrack to its characters and the way the gameplay has been designed, everything comes together to create a unique experience. It is a game that helps you relax and unwind after a long day, while also being deeply immersive. It makes players grow attached to the characters and appreciate their distinct personalities. Unfortunately, the one thing that leaves me disappointed is the lack of an official Brazilian Portuguese translation. Many Brazilian players fell in love with the game's theme and atmosphere, but some have already given up on playing because there is no support for our language. Constantly translating dialogue and text just to follow the story can be exhausting, especially for those who do not speak English. While Spanish is available and is the closest language option for many of us, a lot of Brazilians do not speak Spanish either. The Brazilian Fields of Mistria community has been growing steadily, which is why I hope the team will consider adding an official Portuguese translation in the future. Many Brazilian players are feeling disappointed, and some are even considering giving up on the game because tomorrow's update will not include something they have been hoping for and looking forward to for a long time. I truly hope Fields of Mistria continues to grow and reach even more people. I have developed a great deal of affection for this game, its characters, and its soundtrack. The translation issue is the only thing that really holds me back, and I believe this is not only true for Brazilian players, but also for people from other countries who do not speak English or any of the currently supported languages. I understand that localization takes time and resources, but it is difficult not to feel left behind when so many players are excited to experience the upcoming update while a large part of the Brazilian community will still be unable to fully enjoy it due to the language barrier. I sincerely hope Portuguese can be considered in the future, as there are many players here who love this game and want to support it.
I'm so conflicted on this one. The first ~30 hours were so much fun, it felt like it was doing almost everything I didn't like about Stardew better. But the more I played, the grindier the game became, to the point where I just can't be bothered to keep playing amymore. To be fair, I did finish the entire story. However, there are so many aspects of this game that rely on RNG or very lengthy grinds for no real reason, other than padding game time. - Artifacts are RNG based and can take multiple seasons to find if you have bad luck. This applies to both the dig spots and the ones you can from fishing/diving. Some of the ones you get from the mines are also unreasonably rare; it took me 32 days of spending all my stamina in the mines to get one of them! - For some reason, the ranching skill levels up so much slower than everything else. I've got 24 animals total, have had everything maxed for more than half a year in game, and it's still lagging behind at level 54. - Some tasks take up so much time every single day, and it gets really tedious after a while. For example, petting animals takes a few seconds of playing an animation. It's not so bad at first, but when you get dozens of animals and have to do every single one of them daily, it gets grating really quickly. It can be automated, but that's not until much later into the game. - The main story lines (Mines and town restoration) will have you collecting so many materials, it's kind of crazy honestly just how much the game wants you to provide later on. The story with the mines will force you to grind up to 8/10 hearts of friendship with two NPCs. I wasn't interested in either of them, so I ended up having to start almost from scratch before I could progress, only to be hit with yet another grind. It feels like the developers started out with the aim to make a really cozy, casual and accessible farming game. It absolutely delivers on that part, but the further you get into the story, the further it strays from that, becoming a complete slog of a grind to get any further. It's like they lost sight of the kind of game they were originally making, and honestly it's soured my experience to the point where I no longer want to touch the game. I really liked a good part of my play time, and I stuck with it for about 30 more hours hoping it would get better, but it just kept getting worse. At the point I'm at, there's nothing left to do except grind for the sake of getting achievements. The last ~5 hours of my play time have yielded almost no progress at all toward anything because I'm having bad luck. This isn't fun. I'm really hoping they fix these issues with future patches, because the game is really fun otherwise and it has so much potential. It really feels like it forgot its own identity at one point, which is such a shame because they've got an incredible game here. If they made ways to get around RNG based stuff and lowered the grinds, it would honestly be a near perfect farming sim.
Overall I would probably recommend this game to a certain audience, but with some important caveats. This is not Stardew 2, and I find it to be much more focused on cozy aesthetics and farm design than the other aspects of farming simulation. I wish steam allowed me to be neutral on my review, but do not buy it expecting it to scratch the Stardew itch, unless you can tolerate the following. Its farming sim mechanics are servicable but not unique. I don't enjoy the stamina system, as planting seeds and petting animals take stamina. However, food is reasonably easy to come by at a certain stage of progression, but it is still irritating, partcicularly given that the equivalent to sprinklers is fairly late game and also requires a fair amout of investment. I liked how easy it was to upgrade my tools and barns however, and the team have clearly put a lot of effort in making quality of life improvements in these areas compared to other games. The economy is strange. I did not play in an optimised manner, but it felt like I went from barely having enough money to do anything to having an overwhelming excess within the first year. Ranching, which is typically more profitable than crops, is nearly useless, and you are not even getting your money's worth if you ranch for food ingredients rather than to sell. Animal breeding is fun in terms of cute colourful animals, but not in terms of economic value. Artisan goods, one of my favorite parts of a farm sim, are incredibly underdeveloped and sell for next to nothing. In particular, goods like honey are irritating to produce, as the hive keeps asking you for a crops/foragable in exchange for one jar of honey that usually sells for very little, even at the higher tiers. I've found that the only viable way to make money is through lots of planting. Pair this with an inconvenient stamina system that saps energy at multiple stages of the planting process, and you are significantly capped early game in how much you earn. Its mine mechanics are, unfortunately, rather boring. The enemies you encounter in the mines are all versions of eachother, and although they vary in different enviroments, it feels like an area of the game that has been underdeveloped. I enjoy mining in Stardew a lot, but mining here feels cumbersome, slow and rudamentary (stamina becomes another issue yet again). Oh, and the few precious gems you do encounter sell for less than mayo, which itself does not sell for much. Its characters, while lovingly designed, are almost frighteningly positive and overly friendly. Dialogue choices are far from impactful, and a significant amount of dialogue is esentially fluff and inconsistent in its reactivity to major world events. Some characters who definitely should acknowledge events do not, while some you think wouldn't do. Many character heart events are disappointing, short, and unfocused on the character you're trying to romance. Many characters are defined by one single quirk, such as
Celine likes plants and is nice to you. Hayden likes his pet prize-winning chicken and is nice to you. Ryis likes birds and is nice to you. Balor likes money and is nice to you. The only exceptions, Juniper and March, are rather stereotypical characters for a farming sim. Mean to begrudgingly nice to nice
. I am also disappointed by a lack of events for non bachelors, as I find many of these characters to be more interesting/worthy of a cutscene/character development than many of the bachelors. They feel like set dressing rather than characters the game actually wants you to get to know. I enjoy how characters interact with eachother when you're not there, and I looked forward to snooping on conversations at the inn. But, at the inn in particular, I always felt the outsider -
as you are never invited, even in some dialogue fluff, to participate in any of the games most of the other adults participate in.
This feeling is accentuated by the fact that characters that you have high hearts with still often hit you with a "nice to see you" and nothing else, so it often feels like there is no progress to be made in relationship building. In terms of dating, the actual dates you can go on are underwhelming. While this may change in the future, as it stands, there is no difference between date locations. There is no date dialogue. You get a photocard of your date and thats it. Dating feels pointless, which is really sad given how little romantic interaction you get from your partner otherwise. While I initially really enjoyed the village upgrades, I wish I felt more connection to the town ranking system and the wider world. I was excited to restore Mistria to its pre-game ranking (which feels weirdly low) and raise the town ranking further. What do I get for taking Mistria to highs its never reached? Functionally, nothing. It does not feel rewarding, particularly when few characters even acknowledge it happened. Additionally, we're told that Mistria
was initially more populated pre-earthquake. Why does nobody return when the town ranking far surpasses pre-earthquake Mistria? I feel fundamentally cut off from the outside world, like my actions do not actually change the town in a really meaningful way. I liked upgrading several shops, but think there needs to be bigger ramifications of these upgrades than a slight aesthetic change and a few more items to buy, especially with all the emphasis placed on improving the town.
The festivals are okay? I don't know. I enjoy that they continue in the background and I can walk away from them and do other things, but a lot of them feel empty, like I wouldn't feel a need to return to them in the years to come. Overall, I did play this game for multiple days straight, but at some point, I just lost any will to continue as the flaws noted above became more glaringly obvious and the game felt empiter, lacking a "reason" to continue. It's not a game that priotisises the aspects of farming sims that I personally enjoy. However, with all this being said, if you love designing a cute house/farm, cutesey inoffensive characters with beautiful designs in a very wholesome world, and an experience that almost errs on the side of Animal Crossing over Stardew, this one is for you. But, if like me, you read the earlier reviews praising it as an improved Stardew, I think many of you will be disappiointed.
It's a good game, but it's basically Stardew Valley. After playing for 19 hours, it doesn't really feel like it brings anything completely new to the table. Farming works pretty much the way you know it. Seeds work the way you know them. Mining works the way you know it. Iridium is now Mistrial. Fishing has been simplified, which I honestly find pretty sad because I really liked that minigame. The conversations with the villagers are solid, but nothing too fancy. You have the same sort of mini-quests, the same ranching mechanics with cows, chickens, etc., and the same energy system. I loved Stardew Valley, but I've played it so much that eventually I just couldn't see it anymore. I was hoping this game would bring something fresh to the table. Instead, it feels like a lot of Stardew Valley's mechanics have simply been copied and slightly tweaked to make your farming life easier — and that's about it. Oh yeah — you can jump now, and that's actually something I really like! There also seem to be fewer events than in Stardew Valley, at least from what I've seen so far. Yeah, that's pretty much all I can say for now. I'm already starting to get bored of it. If I wanted to play another round of Stardew Valley, I would've just played another round of Stardew Valley. I'm going to update my review at some point if I find out that the game somehow completely blows my mind with something genuinely new. But honestly, I'm not sure I can keep my motivation alive long enough to find out.
Really enjoyed the game at first. Enough to overlook the performance issues but trying to complete the game is just an awful experience. I am fast forwarding through days just to try and get the museum complete. Wake up, go to the three artifact spots I still need, don't get anything I need, immediately sleep and repeat. I have been doing this for hours and have not received any of the four artifacts I have left to complete. If this was the only issue, I would probably recommend the game but this added to the performance issues and the general time gating the game does it is too much.
im so honest. i like this game more than stardew. is it because i can jump? maybe. is it because you can summon your horse from anywhere? maybe. i love the art. i love the people. i love the lore. i love dragons. if you like stardew you'll probably like this. maybe even more than stardew. im sorry my friends i've betrayed you but fields of mistria is my true love
