Honestly just not for me. I've played for over 100 hours, I wanted to give it a genuine shot. I love Stardew and heard that this was apparently just as good, but honestly, I don't agree. I find certain things with this game to be very clunky, item sorting, storage/chests/combat/cutscences that take an entire day away, etc. I love that you can customize your character and the game looks very pretty. The game does not run super smooth, I feel like everytime I play it I have some kind of issue, getting stuck on walls, lagging severely, items disappearing, (I have made reports regarding these events). The main flaw for me is that I feel like it fails at the main gameplay loop, of getting a quest, collecting a bunch of crap, handing that crap in. This is the exact same as Stardew, but honestly, I find it so tedious in FoM. I feel like the RNG is never on my side in this game, one day i'll see a thousand of this specific bug I need, but then the day I get a quest requesting it, I never see it again. I had had multiple legendary bugs constantly respawning in one day (doesn't feel very legendary when that happens). Also, I don't know if its because I'm spoiled for how well planned the chests are in Stardew, but... I hate the chest system in this game. I feel like I have a thousand chests, and no matter how hard I try to be organized it doesn't matter. In Stardew, I basically have 6 chests total for an entire save, 1 per season, 1 for gems, 1 for misc items. I easily have like 15 different chests in FoM and I haven't even finished the game. Aside from the actual glitchyness or certain things still not being accessible (even after the final big update) this game is fine. In my opinion, no where near as good or thoughtful as Stardew. I'd probably give it a 6/10. Maybe with future updates it will improve my rating idk. I wont recommend it in the state it is in now.
I've played this game for nearly 300 hours. It's an amazing game with a lot of love and passion put into it. That being said the official release left nothing but a bad state in my mouth, the past few updates to the game prior did as well, but nothing to the extent of this one. It feels so.. lacking is the best way to put it. I'm incredibly disappointed with the way children are currently implemented, they're a glorified accessory on the player and an eye sore on spouse sprites. They barely exist and in the ways they do are so minor you could literally go the entire time not interacting with them once. I also was extremely disappointed to find out you can only have once child and they're genderlocked by spouse. I genuinely hope this is something they reconsider in the long run because having the same kid in every playthrough is disheartening. The kids are also are just a carbon copy of either the spouse or one of their family members, its like you as the player don't matter at all when it comes to their parentage, they might as well have gone through mitosis. The game has done such great things with gender expression for players, allowing an amazing pronoun selection, the ability to choose whether to give birth or not regardless of pronouns, and the ability to wear any cosmetic available, if you can afford them but thats another issue, so for the kids to be gender locked like this feels like a slap in the face, they're saying if you love this character and want to have a kid with them they have to be this, no ifs ands or buts. I understand its probably for future character development stuff when it comes to the kids, but I don't believe thats an excuse. To a lot of players in this genre the unexpected nature of what your kid is going to be gender wise is part of the appeal of the family part of the game, this goes against that. Not to mention having a child and marriage are locked to post game. Another decision that I think should be reconsidered. Part of the fun of the game is building relationships, locking that behind a post game that a significant number of players won't even reach is an extremely questionable choice. Some characters receive favoritism over others when it comes to their story and heart events and it's incredibly clear. This was likely due to influence by the community, but thats why just as much focus should've been put on them as the extremely popular choices. In Haden and Valen's heart events you barely learn anything about them as people, just more about their pet or occupation. Non romanceables don't even get cutscenes at all, it makes them feel significantly flatter, like their relationships with you are less than and not worth paying attention to. The museum is disappointing, there was so much promise there only for it to be.. nothing. Just items on a table. I could make that in my house myself, I could probably do it better, which is really sad. Theres only one quick warp in the entire game, and its directly to one of the marriage candidates houses, the other thats as equally as far away? Nothing, she gets left in the dust, she also barely leaves her house so if you forget about her you can't even have the opportunity to up your friendship via conversation on the street. I’m not likely to romance any of the woman options, but even I can see just how unfair that is. The magic in this game is lackluster, sure its in the game, but it really doesn't do much beyond you use a spell to complete one task and then you never touch it again. There are two whole characters who are adept at magic that could teach you something actually useful, but instead you get.. under powered growth spells and the ability to breathe fire that doesn't do damage. I was honestly expecting a teleport or warp spell for the marriage candidate I brought up earlier, as a fast travel to her, but nothing. There are some crafting decisions I find questionable as well. Why can’t you use mayo and duck mayo interchangeably? I don’t even think duck mayo has a use even. Same thing with eggs. Why can’t you choose to use the golden versions of items in a recipe and it give you more out put? Why make exactly what fish you need ina recipe so specific, I can understand for certain recipes, but all of them? Pets/Familiars feel half baked and have since they were introduced. You can either give them a job and at the end of the day they’ll spit a bunch of items at you, ot you can let them sit in the house and do nothing. They don’t wander the farm or the town. They don’t interact with your other animals or spouse. You can’t even tell them to follow you if you wanted. I love this game, I'm going to continue playing it, but I sincerely hope it gets some much needed tlc in a lot of aspects. There are several issues I didn't even bring up here because I just don't have the words or the energy to keep going. I'll definitely be taking a break from the game, which is a shame because thats what I was doing before the latest update dropped. I’ll probably pick it back up on the next major update, or if something big happens in between, but until then I’m left pretty disappointed in the whole experience as of late. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I struggle to get my thoughts in order and written down in a coherent way pretty often.
I'm so sad that I can't play this game without lag or a screen tear ruining the previously great experience I was having for 100+ hours.... I have updated my game driver, enabled VSync and wasted so much time trouble shooting this. I saw this was because of a recent game engine change? Why wasn't this change made in the beta, if that is the case, instead of what should be the official version 1? I'm not playing again until whatever is causing this is fixed...really sad and disappointed about this.
I love you Juniper I love you Valen mommy I love you Adenline I love you Celine (remind me of My wife Haley in another universe) I love you Reina I love you Dragon Priestess even i dont know your real name yet I love women, my lesbian soul had been blessed
it is just a Stardew copy cat of lesser quality
Overall I would probably recommend this game to a certain audience, but with some important caveats. This is not Stardew 2, and I find it to be much more focused on cozy aesthetics and farm design than the other aspects of farming simulation. I wish steam allowed me to be neutral on my review, but do not buy it expecting it to scratch the Stardew itch, unless you can tolerate the following. Its farming sim mechanics are servicable but not unique. I don't enjoy the stamina system, as planting seeds and petting animals take stamina. However, food is reasonably easy to come by at a certain stage of progression, but it is still irritating, partcicularly given that the equivalent to sprinklers is fairly late game and also requires a fair amout of investment. I liked how easy it was to upgrade my tools and barns however, and the team have clearly put a lot of effort in making quality of life improvements in these areas compared to other games. The economy is strange. I did not play in an optimised manner, but it felt like I went from barely having enough money to do anything to having an overwhelming excess within the first year. Ranching, which is typically more profitable than crops, is nearly useless, and you are not even getting your money's worth if you ranch for food ingredients rather than to sell. Animal breeding is fun in terms of cute colourful animals, but not in terms of economic value. Artisan goods, one of my favorite parts of a farm sim, are incredibly underdeveloped and sell for next to nothing. In particular, goods like honey are irritating to produce, as the hive keeps asking you for a crops/foragable in exchange for one jar of honey that usually sells for very little, even at the higher tiers. I've found that the only viable way to make money is through lots of planting. Pair this with an inconvenient stamina system that saps energy at multiple stages of the planting process, and you are significantly capped early game in how much you earn. Its mine mechanics are, unfortunately, rather boring. The enemies you encounter in the mines are all versions of eachother, and although they vary in different enviroments, it feels like an area of the game that has been underdeveloped. I enjoy mining in Stardew a lot, but mining here feels cumbersome, slow and rudamentary (stamina becomes another issue yet again). Oh, and the few precious gems you do encounter sell for less than mayo, which itself does not sell for much. Its characters, while lovingly designed, are almost frighteningly positive and overly friendly. Dialogue choices are far from impactful, and a significant amount of dialogue is esentially fluff and inconsistent in its reactivity to major world events. Some characters who definitely should acknowledge events do not, while some you think wouldn't do. Many character heart events are disappointing, short, and unfocused on the character you're trying to romance. Many characters are defined by one single quirk, such as
Celine likes plants and is nice to you. Hayden likes his pet prize-winning chicken and is nice to you. Ryis likes birds and is nice to you. Balor likes money and is nice to you. The only exceptions, Juniper and March, are rather stereotypical characters for a farming sim. Mean to begrudgingly nice to nice
. I am also disappointed by a lack of events for non bachelors, as I find many of these characters to be more interesting/worthy of a cutscene/character development than many of the bachelors. They feel like set dressing rather than characters the game actually wants you to get to know. I enjoy how characters interact with eachother when you're not there, and I looked forward to snooping on conversations at the inn. But, at the inn in particular, I always felt the outsider -
as you are never invited, even in some dialogue fluff, to participate in any of the games most of the other adults participate in.
This feeling is accentuated by the fact that characters that you have high hearts with still often hit you with a "nice to see you" and nothing else, so it often feels like there is no progress to be made in relationship building. In terms of dating, the actual dates you can go on are underwhelming. While this may change in the future, as it stands, there is no difference between date locations. There is no date dialogue. You get a photocard of your date and thats it. Dating feels pointless, which is really sad given how little romantic interaction you get from your partner otherwise. While I initially really enjoyed the village upgrades, I wish I felt more connection to the town ranking system and the wider world. I was excited to restore Mistria to its pre-game ranking (which feels weirdly low) and raise the town ranking further. What do I get for taking Mistria to highs its never reached? Functionally, nothing. It does not feel rewarding, particularly when few characters even acknowledge it happened. Additionally, we're told that Mistria
was initially more populated pre-earthquake. Why does nobody return when the town ranking far surpasses pre-earthquake Mistria? I feel fundamentally cut off from the outside world, like my actions do not actually change the town in a really meaningful way. I liked upgrading several shops, but think there needs to be bigger ramifications of these upgrades than a slight aesthetic change and a few more items to buy, especially with all the emphasis placed on improving the town.
The festivals are okay? I don't know. I enjoy that they continue in the background and I can walk away from them and do other things, but a lot of them feel empty, like I wouldn't feel a need to return to them in the years to come. Overall, I did play this game for multiple days straight, but at some point, I just lost any will to continue as the flaws noted above became more glaringly obvious and the game felt empiter, lacking a "reason" to continue. It's not a game that priotisises the aspects of farming sims that I personally enjoy. However, with all this being said, if you love designing a cute house/farm, cutesey inoffensive characters with beautiful designs in a very wholesome world, and an experience that almost errs on the side of Animal Crossing over Stardew, this one is for you. But, if like me, you read the earlier reviews praising it as an improved Stardew, I think many of you will be disappiointed.
