A beautiful and unique platformer, I had a lot of fun playing this game. It has a very unique approach to the platformer genre. Every level and area looks beautiful, with a lot of love put into every corner. The core gameplay is very simple, and easy for most people to master, and even for it's most challenging parts as a platformer, is still relatively fair. The most challenge with this game though is with it's fun and unique puzzles and secrets scattered everywhere. Most secrets are solvable on your own (excluding a few that genuinely made me wonder how people found it). Even with little incentive to actually get to the ending screen I felt engaged the whole way, and even after I felt like going back and trying to find as many secrets as I can. The pacing is good, and the map and tracking of collectables is very intuitive. Visually, this game is beautiful. I really love the art style and the theme of all the areas, and how the visuals are used and blended into gameplay mechanics. On the downside, sometimes revisiting places can be a bit slow, especially as even after getting through a level's jumping puzzles, you have to redo them every time you revisit, which for some of the areas was not fun. I feel as a lot of the time the game doesn't direct the player into investigating things that are worth investigating, or directing their attention to something important. It is very easy to skip over things that can be very helpful or important. The game also for some reason has a very annoying loading system, which was probably required at the time of it's original release, but as of now just feels like an unnecessary loading screen. The game also kept giving me a bug which prevented my camera from moving, which caused me to restart the game quite frequently. It also had a few crashes.
Good
The pixel art looks great. The core gameplay mechanic works great. However navigating between worlds in this game is so tedious. The game doesn’t make it easy to know which doors to go which level and I guess you’re supposed to somehow remember routes to get from one world to another? I got sick of trying various doors and solving the same problems over and over to get to doors only to find out it wasn’t the one I wanted. The game does have a form of fast travel but its just occasional warp gates that you also need to navigate to. The movement itself is very slow and repositioning in the air is almost impossible. The game is 12 years old and I guess I’m holding it to modern gameplay standards. But would I recommend it to someone today who has never played before? Probably not.
Really interesting movement and layout but good
Very well constructed game, with interesting mechanics, a wonderful soundtrack, and a charming aesthetic throughout.
