"Salomé, Salomé, dance for me. I pray thee dance for me. I am sad to-night. Yes, I am passing sad to-night. When I came hither I slipped in blood, which is an evil omen; and I heard, I am sure I heard in the air a beating of wings, a beating of giant wings. I cannot tell what they mean .... I am sad to-night. Therefore dance for me.

This has to be, without a doubt, one of the worst "gaming" experience I ever had. And it doesn't even come close. If you have this in your backlog, just throw it in the garbage pile category and never look at it again. If you are thinking of buying this, I have a bridge to sell you. This, and I'm using this term only due to the amount of expletives I would rather want to use instead, G A M E has three, all equally horrible, parts. Part 1 is you being stuck in a cistern where you... wait. That's it. That's the gameplay. You wait and walk around an almost empty cistern while the game plays obnoxious music and throws Oscar Wilde quotes at you, trying to be profound or something, I dunno. I was checking reddit. Part 2 is you hovering in the air, as the creator's self-aware brainfart I presume, and trying to extinguish small flames that are scattered around a rather small space area. But not even here the game is trying to do any effort. The movement is tiresome and slow, as you need to click everytime you want to move (because holding the mouse button is not engaging enough), and the extinguishing is just moving the mouse button over the flame and waiting until it goes out. A total of 24 times. At the halfway mark the game will make you feel like reading Ulysses or The Scarlet Letter is a preferable past time. Part 3 is you watching an average female model (even by 2009 standards) doing a, what I can only assume is the game devs personified, happy dance, due to the fact that even one person decided to spend money on this unimaginative piece of trash. At this point your mind will be so numb that a conversation with a decayed corpse would be a more riveting experience. This part takes about 8 minutes or so. I'm spitballing, because to me it felt like an eternity. And then the game ends. That's it. Nothing else matters. But thankfully this is the best part, because not only you experienced the lowest point of your gaming life and it can only better from now on, but also the game gives you the Quit option which was the first correct decision the devs have made in this game. By a long shot. Unless you're a masochist I dunno I'm not your mother.
How do you make words say more than just words? Playwrights make people move and dance while they say words. Richard Strauss made an opera out of Oscar Wilde's play. And the developers of this game have also used words to say more than words. This is archetypal "games as art," and yes in the right light you might view it as pretentious, probably because it seems inscrutable, and it is slow paced. But it really doesn't have to be non-sensical, or difficult The developers of this game recommend that you go into this without reading instructions - I agree, but the instructions are only part of the manual. Read the manual - the controls are non-intuitive (on purpose?) and while they are displayed in the bottom right corner, it helps to have them laid out in front of you. A few of the control and display issues frustrated me before I got the hang of it (probably because the internet has fried my attention span). The other thing I recommend you read besides the controls is a little bit of the history/info about the story of Salome. I had never witnessed the play, but researching for 5 minutes gave me enough context for me not to be confused, but still feel the mystery of the game.
If you are wanting a game, you will be disappointed. This is not a game. It's interactive art. I initially bought this in 2012 on the strength of the developers' earlier games (The Path and Luxuria Superbia for iPad). Unfortunately, the graphics were a bit choppy and I had to play at a fairly low res to keep my laptop from overheating. Despite the warning about it not being compatible with later versions of MacOS, it works surprisingly well on a new M1 MacBook Air, although you have to fiddle with the controls a bit to compensate for the single mouse (trackpad) button. Worth it though - I can finally play it at the highest graphics level and it is *gorgeous*, even now, twelve years later.
Retryd this mess the controls are so ♥♥♥♥! the content is also ♥♥♥♥! the game play is absent! and iam pretty sure it is actualy glitch locked! nope i looked it up this is it you in a room pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff DO NOT BUY THIS BROKEN ♥♥♥♥! this game is like a main stream religion, a promise of something shinny but rhetoric instead! when you try and look around for yourself it moves you backwards! there is a trinity of movement, arrows (the old schooler) + wasd (the idiot geek) + random clicking (the Myoclonus mouse)! and most of all its controls make no sense.. cant look around unless I right click then it walks backwards (very very cannon religion) ....and when i finally get to an interactive object the object says to me I am A sinner and starts going on about sodom and gomorra.. so I had a look at this little tail of bible babble (sod+gom) and it is incredibly badly written and its morals of sexual abuse are myopic at best, i mean who writes a story about the evils of abuse and leaves the abused as an after thought, it stands to reason that there must be abused if there are a WHOLE village of abusers, where are they in a pile outside, like disney land? absolute justice of the statistically challenged.. god staff: ..wait how many people did we 'Magic Deity kill'? ....oh ♥♥♥♥ I think yep say here 11ty thousand defiled MDKs where cast down and undone jesus: oooh ♥♥♥♥ the jedis r gonna feel this 1!... god staff: who sent u? The morning star (beelzibill): Hi I was totally able to get a temp job here.. where can i put my firey alter and Filofax? heaven: uuh ooh!!... end credits The more i see the work of your lords and farthers the more I start to think Hihatchi Mishima is actually a better farther! All praise the iron fist tournament!!
I am a big fan of artistic projects and using visuals to adapt stories. If you are too, then "Fatale" will be a nice half on an hour to spend. If not, avoid it all cost. It's definitely far from a bad product, as you can see creators' heart and soul in it, but as someone else mentione, it's more of a spectacle than game. The plot demands some knowledge about Oscar Wilde's play and biblical mythology in general, I guess and there's not much to do, only enjoy the eerie atmosphere of the sceneries presented. For me it was great and I'm looking further to buy other projects from Tale of Tales.
I was well aware before I bought the title that this is not a "game" in the traditional sense, but rather an interactive artwork. With that in mind, the experience feels underwhelming and meager. It's definetly not worth seven bucks.
This is a very good atmospheric, narrative and artistic game and I'm absolutely serious about it.
So glad I ignored all the negative reviews. Beautiful game! I had to play it twice in a row to really wrap my head around it.
