Farlanders: Prologue, developed and published by Andriy Bychkovskyi, is a compact yet thoughtfully designed introduction to a turn-based colony builder that leans heavily into strategic planning and spatial problem-solving. Rather than following the real-time, expansion-driven formula typical of the genre, it slows the pace down and reframes city-building as a sequence of deliberate, almost puzzle-like decisions. Set on a hostile, Mars-like world, the game challenges players to establish a sustainable settlement under strict constraints, where every placement and action carries long-term consequences. At the heart of the experience is its turn-based structure, which fundamentally changes how players approach colony management. Each turn presents a limited set of actions, encouraging careful consideration instead of reactive play. Buildings must be positioned with efficiency in mind, ensuring that resources such as water, food, and energy are properly distributed. Mistakes are rarely immediate, but they compound over time, creating a sense of tension that rewards foresight. This measured pacing gives the game a distinct identity, making it feel closer to a strategy puzzle than a traditional city builder. What truly sets Farlanders: Prologue apart is its terraforming system. Players are given tools that allow them to reshape the landscape—raising terrain, creating fertile ground, or generating water sources—but these tools come with fixed patterns and limited availability. This constraint forces players to adapt their plans around what they are given rather than executing ideal layouts. The interplay between terrain manipulation and building placement becomes the core challenge, as players must constantly balance short-term needs with long-term efficiency. It’s a mechanic that feels both inventive and restrictive, offering satisfying solutions when everything aligns while occasionally introducing frustration when options don’t cooperate. This tension between planning and unpredictability defines much of the experience. Procedural elements ensure that each scenario feels slightly different, adding replay value and preventing strategies from becoming overly formulaic. At the same time, the reliance on randomized tools and terrain can make certain situations feel out of the player’s control, particularly when critical resources are difficult to access. For some, this unpredictability enhances the challenge and keeps the gameplay fresh; for others, it may feel like an obstacle to precise strategic planning. Despite its limited scope, the game manages to deliver a compelling gameplay loop. Each scenario presents unique conditions and objectives, requiring players to adjust their approach rather than rely on a single optimal strategy. There’s a strong sense of learning through iteration, as players refine their understanding of the mechanics and improve their efficiency with each attempt. The satisfaction comes not from narrative progression but from mastering the system itself—finding smarter ways to connect resources, optimize space, and overcome environmental limitations. Visually, the game adopts a clean pixel art style that emphasizes clarity over complexity. The isometric perspective makes it easy to read the terrain and plan placements, while the muted color palette reinforces the harsh, barren setting. The interface is straightforward and functional, allowing players to focus on decision-making without unnecessary distractions. While the presentation isn’t particularly flashy, it is cohesive and well-suited to the game’s design. The most noticeable limitation is its brevity. As a prologue, the game offers only a handful of scenarios, and while these are well-crafted, they can be completed relatively quickly. Just as players begin to fully grasp the depth of the mechanics, the experience comes to an end, leaving a sense of untapped potential. Additionally, the onboarding process can feel somewhat abrupt, with limited guidance for new players, which may lead to confusion during the early stages. Narrative elements are minimal, serving more as thematic context than a central focus. The game hints at the broader challenges of colonization and survival, but it doesn’t delve deeply into storytelling. This approach aligns with its emphasis on mechanics, though it may leave players who prefer narrative-driven experiences wanting more. Ultimately, Farlanders: Prologue succeeds as a focused and engaging proof of concept. It introduces a unique blend of city-building and puzzle design that feels both fresh and thoughtfully constructed. While its limited content and occasional reliance on randomness prevent it from feeling fully complete, it offers a rewarding experience for players who enjoy methodical planning and strategic experimentation. It stands as a promising glimpse of a larger system, one that has the potential to expand into something far more substantial. Rating: 7/10

I was just trying to find something that didn't totally suck but wasn't too time/energy intensive since I have 2 under 2... and I found an absolute gem. Reminds me of games back when the majority of them weren't so "meh". Lol all started from looking up Space Colony, realizing it's remastered and on steam now.... but oh no, it's free games only for me til these precious lil turds outgrow diapers and carrying around emotional support bags of grapes.
Thank you for the Prologue! PROS: Mars colony management. Ah, let me rephrase that: I am a PRO-Mars colony management gamer. CONS: I got stuck and could not progress in time for Day35. Could not beat it in however ways I restart and played it. Not blaming the gameplay, it's probably the RNG elements that was handed to me. ACTUAL CONS: I am not lucky with RNG.
Tetris? ets not about "development" its about "tetris-terra-forming" Плюсы + :для демки я таки потратил норм времени Минусы - Cons Нельзя сделать приоритет занимаемой работы поселенцами и не понимаешь почему они не хотят делать еду и сидят на заводе. (Ручками завод выключай.) Citzens prefer work on factory instead of making food to survive.
Ich kann diese DEMO nur weiterempfehlen! Wer ein pixliges Strategiespiel sucht und noch nicht weiß, ob Farlanders die richtige Wahl ist, für den ist diese DEMO das perfekte!
The game is awesome. Peaceful, balanced and enjoying. Made by Ukrainians. Looking forward to more content, and continuation of Nicole and Mykolay story.
