Hits that spot. With great music and simple controls, The game gets out of the way of you enjoying it. Much appreciated!
Good: - Detailed skill numbers! I can't count how many times I've seen games with vague 'increases power' or 'lowers damage taken' descriptors. I like having exact numbers, and this game includes an option to turn them on. - Steady pace of new abilities/tiers, at least until the end game. - Decent to good writing. It's hard to write up a good story almost entirely driven by dialogue, but I felt quite satisfied with this one. - Some variance with mission objectives. - Useful, gameplay-impacting customization options. - Animations. They looked cool and the powerful moves really felt like they packed a punch. - Most(!) attacks, buffs, and debuffs were clear and it was simple enough to understand what was happening in combat. - The gameplay in general. It's just fun. - Music was solid. It helped set a tone and was pleasing to listen to. Neutral: - Difficulty sliders. I never use them, but they certainly don't hurt the game to include. - Overworld map. The mountain and desert weren't very impressive, but the city and the forest were pretty cool. - Length was alright, but I think would've been best ~4 chapters shorter. I say this mainly based on the pace of unlocks. The final tier of ring drives, traits, and abilities was reached several chapters before the game ended. - Fast mode and tile height display help make gameplay better, but they seem like band-aids to deeper issues with the game. I enjoyed watching the animations, but combat was just way too slow watching everyone do everything a the normal speed. Bad: - Very hard to see some tiles on certain maps. Hard to tell if tiles were traversable from one elevation to another at a glance. - Some enemy effects (mainly their buffs to each other, but Solar Flare was hard to figure out too) not clear sometimes. Hard to make decisions when I don't know exactly what these moves do and I can't really figure it out from the context. - Early game was rough. Felt like I was at the mercy of enemy ranged units. Didn't have the tools to deal with them. - Characters seemed to lose agency for the sake of the plot near the end. A lot of "we don't have a choice" sort of conversations. It felt a lot like the characters weren't working toward something, or executing a plan, they were just being swept up in something else. Characters are much more interesting to follow when they're making clear choices and have clear goals. [I realize the ending kind of explains why this was, but that doesn't change the fact it makes things less interesting to follow.] Overall, a good game and a solid pickup for any TRPG/turn-based combat fans out there. Well done, Matthew Wong.
Pretty good little game, characters are fun to use and build around, and the writing isn't bad either. Had fun turning Gabriel into a whirlwind of steel by the end of the story, and NG+ seems like a fun place to mess around with whatever builds and ridiculous big numbers. Give it a try xd
Charming little tactics game. Game+ mode, which is nice. One of the few games that I enjoyed enough to play through twice. A couple of thoughts, none of which are negative enough to stop someone from buying and enjoying the game: 1. Gabriel is obviously a female, but Gabriel is a male name. Should be "Gabrielle" or something similar. (Spoiler upcoming!) 2. In Game+ mode, we are now allowed to understand what the enemies have been saying the entire time. However, it's not logically consistent. There's a party member that we are told has understood them the entire time, yet their dialogs frequently don't make sense given that information. They fail to speak up in cases where they 100% would have said something if they understood their language, and what they say often sounds very odd given their level of understanding. (Another Spoiler) 3. After watching the scene after the final battle, we see a figure run up from the bottom of the screen before everything goes to hell. I assumed that this represented a last-ditch effort to save the character who sacrificed themselves, but that plot hole is never resolved, at least 2/3 through the second play-through. 4. The power levels in the game for the different characters are widely disparate. By far the biggest body count is held by Graff with his Barrage skill, which is able to mow down enemies by the handful. The second best goes to Gabriel's level 4 Sonic Boom, which can devastate as many enemies as I can manage to catch in a X from them. After that, the other characters are lucky if they can kill a single enemy each. I almost never end up using any of their skills. 5. The ending lacks satisfaction. I will see what happens after I complete this Game+ playthrough, but if it's the same as the first time I will feel disappointed. Still, it's worth playing.
Play Fell Seal Arbiters Mark instead. This game is so shallow in comparison. The story started interesting with Cern teleporting a bunch of random people to another dimension. But then they meet and only explain to each other what their combat abilities are not, you know where they lived, what might have happened etc. And then they run into werewolves and for the rest of the game you just fight the same werewolves over and over. The wolves don't speak and as such they are really really boring bad guys. The plot is basically that one scene from the Dota2 Reporter Season 2: "I don't understand your language therefore I hate you!" Combat is also boring and has some really weird design decisions. Example the healer: he is useless. Only 2 characters in your squad can actually be healed by him. The rest are Mana characters that take mana damage when hit and die when they run out of mana. So healing them does nothing. Your dog is the actual healer that can restore mana. But he is the only one that can do so, which means he only casts restore mana and doesn't do anything else, rendering all other ablities useless. The ring and crafting system is also bad and feels very weak and not like your characters gain any strength. And the AI just waits if you are too far away which means there are always hordes of enemies on each map but they wont charge you. They just sit on the top of the hill and wait for you to come to them. Which drags battles out.
a great game with bad writting but amazing Turn based game play. though the first boss in the city was unfairly difficult with sponge health and low hit rate and made me stop playing, the 9 hours before hand were challenging and fun, my favorite was the indoor desert levels, those were a blast. unique, and fun. though the game plays its hole hand about three hours in. hence why i was so easy to give up at the first sign of bad quality.
After playing the demo I loved this game, and it was a day 1 purchase for me. I haven't played FFT or other big names in this genre so I can't comment on how it compares, and I'm only part-way through the game, but I still love it. The characters (that I actually feel a connection with), dialogue, music and overall level of polish are superb.
Delightful little tactical rpg. The limited build variety is entirely made up for by the fantastic character progression. New skills and traits feel very good to acquire and each character has a unique suite of potential playstyles. The dog character's abilites are a brilliantly fun innovation on the TRPG formula and the story is engaging for the entire game. Difficulty is well proportioned and it never feels too hard or too easy. Overall this is one of my favorite tactics games to play this year.
Good, clean fun.
