Great very old game, runs great. 8-11 tries later I think i'll finally beat this game.
Fantasy General, developed by Strategic Simulations and published by SNEG, is a turn-based strategy title that takes the well-established framework of the “General” series and reimagines it within a high-fantasy world. Instead of tanks and artillery, players command armies of knights, orcs, undead, and mythical creatures, all battling across hex-based maps that emphasize positioning and long-term planning. While the foundation is familiar, the shift in setting gives the experience a different tone, blending traditional wargame mechanics with elements of fantasy storytelling and progression. The core gameplay remains rooted in methodical, turn-based tactics. Units move across a grid where terrain plays a crucial role, affecting movement, defense, and combat effectiveness. Every decision carries weight, from where to position your forces to when to engage or hold back. The pace is deliberate, encouraging players to think several turns ahead rather than rely on quick reactions. This structure makes the game approachable at a surface level, but it gradually reveals layers of complexity as players learn how different unit types interact and how terrain can be used to their advantage. What distinguishes Fantasy General is how it integrates fantasy elements into this system. Armies are composed of diverse units, each with unique strengths and roles, and the inclusion of magic and special abilities adds a layer of variety to combat. Heroes and artifacts introduce progression beyond simple unit upgrades, allowing players to enhance their forces over time. While these features bring a sense of identity to the game, they are often built on top of the existing mechanics rather than fundamentally altering them. As a result, the experience feels like an evolution of the series rather than a complete transformation. The campaign structure plays a significant role in maintaining engagement. Players choose from different generals, each offering subtle variations in playstyle, and guide their army through a series of increasingly challenging battles. Units persist between missions, gaining experience and becoming more effective, which encourages careful management and long-term planning. This continuity creates a sense of attachment to your army, as seasoned units become valuable assets that you’ll want to protect throughout the campaign. The game also incorporates elements of exploration and reward. Capturing key locations can grant access to new units, magical items, or other advantages, adding a sense of discovery to the progression. These moments help break up the flow of combat, providing incentives to take risks and explore different strategies. While the overarching narrative follows a familiar fantasy arc, it serves as a functional backdrop that supports the gameplay without becoming a central focus. Despite its strengths, the game’s hybrid nature can feel somewhat restrained. The fantasy setting introduces new ideas, but the underlying mechanics remain closely tied to the traditional wargame formula. Magic systems are relatively straightforward, and unit interactions, while varied, do not always reach the level of depth that the setting might suggest. This can make the experience feel less innovative than it initially appears, particularly for players expecting a more transformative approach to the genre. There are also aspects of the game that reflect its age. The interface, while functional, can feel dated, and the pacing may seem slow compared to modern strategy titles. Learning how to effectively use different units and abilities requires time and patience, and the game does not always provide clear guidance. However, for players willing to engage with its systems, this learning process becomes part of the overall appeal. Visually, Fantasy General adopts a classic sprite-based presentation that prioritizes clarity over detail. While it lacks the polish of contemporary games, it remains easy to read and navigate, which is essential for a strategy-focused experience. The audio design, including its dramatic soundtrack, helps reinforce the fantasy atmosphere, even if it can become repetitive during extended play sessions. In the end, Fantasy General succeeds as a solid and engaging strategy game that blends familiar mechanics with a distinctive setting. It may not fully realize the potential of its fantasy elements, but it offers enough depth and variety to remain compelling, particularly for fans of turn-based tactics. Its strength lies in its balance—accessible enough for newcomers, yet layered enough to reward careful planning and experimentation. Rating: 8/10
