A beautiful game with slightly overpowered mechanics
Fallen Legion Revenants is a dark, story-driven side-scrolling action RPG that blends fast, tactical combat with a heavy emphasis on narrative choice and political intrigue. Set in a bleak world poisoned by miasma, the game presents a society split between those suffering below and the ruling elite living atop a massive floating castle. This oppressive setting immediately establishes a grim tone, one where survival, power, and morality are constantly in conflict. Rather than framing the story as a simple battle between good and evil, the game leans into ambiguity, asking players to navigate a world where every decision carries consequences and no outcome feels entirely clean or just. The narrative is built around two protagonists whose stories run in parallel but are deeply intertwined. Rowena, a mother resurrected as a revenant, fights desperately to protect her son and confront the horrors of the world head-on. In contrast, Lucien operates within the castle’s political machinery, using words, alliances, and calculated decisions to shape the future from behind the scenes. This dual perspective is one of the game’s most compelling features, as it allows players to experience both the physical struggle of survival and the quieter, often more dangerous battle for influence and control. Choices made through Lucien’s political maneuvering can directly impact Rowena’s journey, creating a sense that the world reacts to your decisions rather than merely progressing along a fixed path. Combat in Fallen Legion Revenants is real-time and highly stylized, focusing on precision, timing, and coordination rather than raw button-mashing. Rowena fights alongside a small squad of spectral warriors known as Exemplars, each filling a distinct role in battle. Managing these characters effectively requires attention to cooldowns, positioning on a limited grid, and enemy attack patterns. Blocking and countering are just as important as offense, and encounters reward players who take the time to understand enemy behavior instead of rushing in recklessly. When the system clicks, battles feel fluid and satisfying, blending the immediacy of action games with the deliberate planning of tactical RPGs. Between combat encounters, the game slows its pace to focus on dialogue, world-building, and decision-making. These segments are not simply narrative filler but an essential part of the experience, reinforcing the themes of control, sacrifice, and consequence. Political decisions can alter story routes, unlock or deny certain opportunities, and even influence the tone of future events. While the long-term impact of some choices may not always be immediately clear, this uncertainty reinforces the game’s themes and encourages replay for players interested in exploring alternate outcomes and hidden narrative branches. Visually, the game adopts a hand-drawn, anime-inspired art style that gives its characters strong personality and emotional presence. The 2D sprites are expressive, and the Exemplars in particular stand out due to their unique designs and animations. Backgrounds convey a strong sense of atmosphere, whether depicting the decaying lands below or the cold, opulent interiors of the castle above. That said, presentation can be uneven at times, with some interface elements and visual effects feeling less refined than the character art itself. These issues don’t ruin the experience, but they can occasionally distract from the otherwise striking aesthetic. Progression is driven through character customization and strategic choices rather than traditional grinding. Equipping and upgrading Exemplars allows players to tailor their combat approach, encouraging experimentation with different party compositions and playstyles. Difficulty can spike if systems are ignored, but players who engage with the mechanics are rewarded with a strong sense of mastery. The branching narrative structure and multiple endings further add to the game’s longevity, making repeat playthroughs feel meaningful rather than redundant. Overall, Fallen Legion Revenants is a bold and ambitious title that prioritizes story, choice, and tactical combat over mass appeal. It is not a game designed for quick gratification or casual play, but for players willing to invest time into learning its systems and absorbing its morally complex narrative. While it has rough edges in pacing and presentation, its strengths lie in its unique dual-protagonist structure, challenging combat, and willingness to explore difficult themes. For fans of action RPGs who value narrative depth and meaningful decision-making, Fallen Legion Revenants offers a rich and memorable experience that stands apart from more conventional entries in the genre.
Controls are awful. This is also the only game i have ever played that does not work with an official Xbox controller, but DOES work with a Dualsense.
