Fun adventure game in a pirate world with nice atmosphere, linear gameplay and not that interesting shooting. When a guy wakes up after drinking a lot the night before, he heads to the bathroom to get rid of all the fluids. But when he looks towards the bathtub, he notices a skeleton inside. He dismisses it as a booze-induced hallucination and prepares for work. He dashes down the stairs, opens the front door, and plunges into a pirate world populated by living skeletons. The gameplay resembles a first-person adventure. You move around and explore the location you are on. You start on an island, but later you move to other locations. Although the game's UI will be familiar to fans of horror indie games, with a throbbing heart representing health and a diary displaying your current objective, it has been tailored to the game. This UI nearly always comes with an annoying lighter and flashlight that require batteries or fuel to work. There is a flashlight here, but you don’t have to worry about batteries. Aside from walking forward, you make progress via finding and utilizing objects. Items are used automatically when you click on the spot. The only rule is that you have it in your inventory. None of it is marked with visual cues, so you must approach anything and see if it displays a hand icon when you hover the cursor above it. This is usually not an issue because most items are located in chests, and there are notes throughout that can send you in the right direction or disclose more about this weird world. While it is difficult to get lost due to the confined location and linear progress, the great diary prevents wandering in the dark by telling you exactly what needs to be done and updating frequently. One thing to remember is to read notes and interact with everything you can because this triggers events and spawns new items that might not have been there before. Low-poly images provide great visuals. They may not seem particularly unique because so many games use the same style, but everything looks great and blends well together. The game has a few scary moments, such as sewers and dark souls that come after you like a wave. As you solve challenges, the day will turn into evening, and skeletons will appear. They will not do anything, yet they appear to move while you are not watching. However, everything changes as night falls. Then they come alive and hunt you. Fortunately, you are also given a pistol to take them out. A skeleton can be dropped with two bullets, and there’s another enemy that requires three. Ammo is limited and discovered in small boxes, but because enemy confrontations are almost like puzzles, if you waste too many bullets, you will have to restart from the previous checkpoint. Another annoying part is when you have low health. This makes your vision blurry until you eat a few cucumbers, which act as healing items. But if you don’t have any, it’s easier to reload a previous save because finding something with blurry vision is not fun. The game does a good job by automatically saving in many slots, allowing you to return to any checkpoint. However, there was one bothersome bug that appeared in the second level. If you die or restart in this stage, the triggers become messed up, rendering the stage unsolvable. This can be fixed by loading a checkpoint before entering the new stage and not dying. Despite episode 1 tag, there’s quite a lot of content here for around 3-4 hours. However, the game leaves all questions unanswered because it simply ends with “to be continued” message.
Great game!
Evil Water Ep1, developed by KPy3O and published by Noostyche, is a first-person adventure that combines psychological themes, exploration, puzzle-solving, and light combat within a dreamlike horror setting. Rather than relying on constant scares or action-heavy encounters, the game focuses on telling the story of a man whose life has been shaped by trauma, addiction, and personal loss. The result is a small but intriguing experience that aims to blend emotional storytelling with atmospheric exploration. The narrative centers on a war veteran who struggles with alcoholism after returning from military service. His addiction gradually destroys important parts of his life, including his career and his relationship with a woman who later finds success as a singer. This backstory gives the game a surprisingly serious emotional foundation. Instead of presenting a straightforward horror tale, Evil Water Ep1 uses its supernatural elements as reflections of the protagonist’s damaged mental state. The story explores themes of regret, guilt, and self-destruction, giving players a reason to look beyond the surface-level adventure. Most of the journey unfolds inside strange dreams where reality becomes distorted and symbolic. The game’s environments mix pirate-inspired imagery with eerie horror elements, creating a setting that feels unusual and unpredictable. Skeletons, hidden locations, dangerous creatures, and mysterious ruins fill the world, encouraging players to investigate every corner. This combination of fantasy adventure and psychological horror helps the game stand apart from more conventional indie horror titles. While the dream sequences occasionally feel abstract, they contribute significantly to the overall atmosphere and narrative direction. Gameplay is built around exploration and progression through a series of simple challenges. Players search for clues, navigate different environments, and solve puzzles that are designed to keep the adventure moving rather than provide intense mental challenges. The puzzles are generally accessible and easy to understand, making the game approachable for casual players. Combat appears periodically throughout the experience, allowing players to defend themselves against monsters encountered during their journey. These encounters are relatively straightforward and function more as a way to support the story and pacing rather than serve as the main attraction. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its atmosphere. The low-poly visual style may appear simple at first glance, but it works effectively within the dream setting. Clever lighting, environmental design, and the constant feeling of uncertainty help create memorable locations despite the modest graphical presentation. Dark corridors, abandoned settlements, underground passages, and mysterious landmarks all contribute to a lingering sense of unease. The world often feels like a fragmented memory, reinforcing the psychological themes that drive the story. The pacing remains focused throughout the episode, though some players may wish for deeper gameplay systems. The puzzles rarely become complex, and the combat lacks the sophistication found in larger action or survival horror games. Because the experience emphasizes storytelling and atmosphere over mechanics, players seeking intense challenges may find the gameplay somewhat limited. However, those who appreciate narrative-driven adventures will likely find the simplicity beneficial, as it allows the emotional and thematic aspects of the game to remain at the forefront. What ultimately makes Evil Water Ep1 interesting is its commitment to exploring personal struggles through surreal imagery and symbolic storytelling. The protagonist’s battle with addiction and trauma gives meaning to the strange events unfolding around him, making the adventure feel more personal than many low-budget horror releases. Although the game does not introduce groundbreaking mechanics, it demonstrates creativity through its setting, themes, and presentation. As the opening chapter of a larger story, Evil Water Ep1 succeeds in establishing curiosity about what comes next. Its combination of psychological drama, dreamlike exploration, and accessible gameplay creates an experience that is both distinctive and easy to approach. While the limited scope and simple mechanics prevent it from reaching the highest tier of the genre, the game offers enough atmosphere and narrative intrigue to leave a positive impression. Rating: 7/10
Excellent game with an amazing plot! I liked the atmosphere and the development of the world! The style of the games turned out to be Low Poly, it was nice to watch the whole process!
Evil Water Ep1 :: a puzzle adventure with hints of darkness :: an blend of easy, casual puzzles and bright graphics with a foreboding atmosphere and jump scares. Good for light horror fans. 6/10
This is actually a pretty cool game with a solid 4-5 hrs of gameplay, cool art style and very much worth the $1 I spent on it. Played it on a 7680 x 2160 monitor, but had to use an external program to increase the FOV to 139 deg to make the game playable on this type of monitor.
В хорошем смысле странно, лампово, мало. Прошел в один присест, хотя это вообще не мой жанр.
