Eventide 2: The Sorcerers Mirror is an exciting adventure game inspired by Slavic mythology. Embark on a mystical adventure in a forgotten mountain village ruled by an immortal sorcerer. Can you unravel his secret? Roaming through the areas this mythical setting has to offer, several beautiful, diverse locations have to be discovered, whilst numerous challenges need to be completed. Accompanied with a captivating background story, all set in this wonderful setting. Developer “The House of Fables” currently has, at the time of writing this review, created 3 installments of Eventide, which all released on Steam. They singlehandedly have made, or co-created, 7 hidden-object games in total, all released by Artifex Mundi. We are dealing with a more experienced studio here. Art style of the game is overall mediocre cartoony, compared to other AM HOG. Expect colorful backgrounds in which the game plays. Withchaotic, somewhat more blended backgrounds. All lot of variation is implemented throughout the entire game, with the backgrounds being beautiful enough to blend the game to a whole experience.Storywise, the game is not divided up into chapters, making it a more streamlined, railroady and rather short HOG. Hence, backtracking between several areas is not required as much, which keeps a good pace throughout the game. The ambient sound effects and background music blend in seamlessly with the graphics and gameplay, and add to the enjoyment. Background music can be repetitive, however, ranging from piano music to soothing roleplaying music. Whereas all dialogue is spoken. Animations are present in a more simplistic, static manner, but the lipping of the characters is done in a better way than previous AM installments. There are very few standard hidden object scenes, with occasionally some combination objects in them, pretty standard as in previous AM games. Some objects, like the imp cards and mirrors, found in the backgrounds are somewhat difficult to find and can be missed, since they have a achievements attached to them, beware achievement hunters. With the minigames, heck the entire game, being more on the easy side. Some of the games were very enjoyable however. In the second half of the game, more inventory items being to collect and it can become more unclear what to do next. There is no bonus chapter included in Eventide 2. The game is, with 2 consecutive playthroughs of the game required, to achieve the perfect game, excellently suited for achievement hunters and completionists. Some achievements are particularly easy to miss out on, a few collection ones. 30 achievements have to be unlocked to get a perfect game, easily done under 4 hours or less. Beware, the most difficult achievement, called "Choose Well" is broken and requires you to play through the game 2 consecutive times in one sitting. Without closing the game after your first playthrough, you immediately have to play through again choosing the other set of option, without exiting the game. For more info on this check out this link: How to unlock the broken “Choose Well” achievement Overall, Eventide 2: The Sorcerers Mirror, is a lower difficulty, very linear, shorter edition, compared to other installments of the Artifex Mundi publisher line. Developers “The House of Fables” created a somewhat typical HOG, with fewer hidden object scenes, and some hidden objects integrated in the backgrounds. Recommended for: hidden object game lovers, achievement hunters, completionists & casual gamers. For reviews of Artifex Mundi hidden object games, I like to compare them to other games in their publishing line, assuming the reader knows as to what hidden object games are. Cheers, SultanK
Eventide 2: The Sorcerers Mirror takes us back into the world of the first game (although the location is not specified), with the same protagonist - Mary - facing another evil magician once again. It's still the same hidden object game, where we have to find/sort out usually 12 marked objects on the screen by clicking on them and doing various minigames along the way, but this game tries something that is uncommon to the genre: a decision-making feature, even if it can't really work obviously the way as it would in a role-playing game due to the limitations of the genre/engine. The tagline in the description "Discover the magic of slavdom!" feels somewhat forced as if they were trying to bring the game closer to the first part, considering it's just the names (+ clothing) of some of the characters and ornaments that imply slavic (precisely Polish, I would say) origin. After the foreboding introduction we witness the kidnapping of our niece, Jenny and of course it'll be our job to rescue her, moreover foil the evil plan of her abductor. Unfortunately a lot of the plot is given away fairly early in the game and it doesn't really evolve much beyond the base concept, but it's enjoyable nevertheless. Eventide 2 successfully lines up all the necessary and well-known minigames and puzzles with a fair number of hidden object scenes to satisfy lovers of the genre. They are not overcomplicated, on the contrary - even everyone's 'favourite', the rotating marble bead puzzle is easy and can be solved within a few moves. On higher difficulties however it's not uncommon to get stuck, since we get no indications where we should snoop around next (just like in a real adventure game) and some places become available only after triggering certain events first. We also get to use many items (the same one often multiple times) from our inventory bringing the game close to a classic point-and-click adventure. This goes to an extent where we can attempt to use a wrong item (like a knife to loosen up a board) with separate animations instead of just the usual "I can't use that here" line. As for the game's main asset - the choices we can make at certain key points - it's a nice attempt, but it doesn't make much of a difference in the outcome: either we get different items occasionally or we receive them from someone else just the same. The good choices are always apparent and it pays off to pick them: the developers reward the player for honest answers. There are 5 of these and the game's 'toughest' achievement is related to them: we have to make different choices, by immediately replaying the game (until the 5th choice with the imp and the necklace) after we beat it without quitting... I think this is because these games usually set up an account for us (within the game) and here this is missing, so our choices are not saved when we finish and quit. We can still continue our game from where we left it otherwise, except for if we want this particular achievement. Knowing this, it shouldn't be an issue getting to that point of the game for the second time, which is probably around 30-60 minutes depending on which difficulty we play. Besides the library, we have a lovely little achievement/collectible display (represented by the crystal on the right - careful, it's right next to the hint providing mirror) where we can keep track of everything we need to find. There are 2 types of collectibles: glimmering mirrors and imp cards, but the game rewards us for talking to all the imps and reading all the notes as well. There's no bonus chapter this time. The graphics are stylized: the backgrounds are like colourful paintings and the animated, somewhat cartoonish looking characters fit nicely into them. The first half of the game which takes place in the forest and the small village in the foothills are breathtakingly beautiful. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=800972760 Cutscenes are plentiful and of good quality, contrary to many specimens of the genre. Music is just as well enchanting, although to be fair that also applies to just the first half of the game, after we enter the wizard's manor, it becomes unremarkable. The voice acting is neat in general, although some of them feel overplayed. Eventide 2 is probably one of the best looking hidden object games out there and has almost everything that's required to be enjoyable. The introduction of the choice system is nice and the otherwise useless diary was actually handy here. On the other hand the game has some quirks, like the mentioned achievement bug or the game telling us we are unable to go in multiple rooms since the wizard is there - in 2 rooms simultaneously... but these are really just minor issues. The game is better than its predecessor and anyone who likes a good HOG should definitely play it. PROS + absolutely amazing scenery and locations + a wide variety of minigames + enchanting soundtracks + choices (even if it's half-baked) + useful diary and achievement display CONS - quite short, no bonus chapter - the second half of the game is somewhat lackluster RATING 7.5/10
Nice hidden objects game but Eventide 1 is better.
I think this game is the best one in the trilody of Eventide. Goood ol' puzzles and nice hidden object segments. The art is nice, story is good, additionaly choice mechanic gives replayability for achivement! Music was such a hit too! This is where the positives end. HOWEVER: You need to play this game twice in a row for an achivement, this isn't fun to force the player to replay against their will. Unfortunately for me - achivement with hidden objects and solving puzzles without help didn't pop up! I replayed the game a couple of times without help, but still no reaction! Left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. The bug hasn't been fixed until today and celtic runes were featured in a slavic game? Huh?
It's an okay game, but it was a bit short for the price and it doesn't seem to have a bonus chapter. A lot of people are cross about the choices and the achievements. Personally, I'm not too bothered about the achievements, and while the choices aren't all they're cracked up to be, they're not a negative either. Not the best of Artifex Mundi but not the worst either.
This is a solid game with some really nice music, gorgeous scenery, and it serves a subtle enough continuation of the first game that you don't necessarily need to remember exactly what happened in that game if you're like me and played it three years ago. It tells a story of grief and love and what people do to try to deal with those feelings, and, frankly, it's rather sad in a good way. None of the hidden object puzzles have mistakes and they're even somewhat challenging at times, and most of the minigames are straightforward and contribute to the story. Nicely done. Played it a second time with different choices, and I'm kinda underwhelmed. First playthrough as being a good person was best. The achievement for doing it also didn't take, so I'm guessing you need to do it all in once sitting, which I don't feel like playing a third-fourth time to get.
