For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. Awesome old school experience, great for winding down after work. just enough difficulty to keep me save scumming
The game looks a bit rough, but honestly is amazingly fun if you enjoy older style RPG's, but with more modern day QOL changes. Basically open world, highly customizable MC, and a pretty interesting plot!
Writing a new review after beating the game. I could have easily taken much longer to beat the game if I had spent the time going through every single one of my companion's backstory quests (which are all well done!). I will start with the negatives (not many). I only have a few things I disliked, the music being the chief one of those. Sometimes it's good, other times it's ear grating and discordant (unsure if that's the style they were going for, but it doesn't really work in the capitol, and I'm not the first to say it). The other thing I disliked was the rate of encounters in some areas, but that is easily fixed by running or unlocking a utility skill that lets you avoid encounters by the time they get annoying. Now for the positives, in no particular order. I feel like I made many non-conventional choices which led to an interesting ending, which is a good thing for me. About 10 hours to beat the game with finishing all I wanted to do in the way I wanted to. I will probably play this through at least one more time, maybe more, just so I can see all the stories of the party members I found. (At least 10 from what I remember, and only finished the stories of about 4 of them). I also want to see what happens when I pick other options in the civil war and other quests. Overall, this game is surprisingly in depth and fun to play, and I could have put much more time into the game and maxing out more classes (you get some buffs for maxing a class and switching to a new one). Artwork is fantastic in the battles, meh in the overworld (RPG maker is obvious here). Character art is improved from what I saw in that first video covering the game we all watched. The difficulty wasn't particularly hard, and it was paced well. You learn quickly what you can fight and that AOE and DOT effects are your friend. Buffs and debuffs matter. By the end I could beat pretty much everything, even the final boss the first try. (Heal All + Rally for infinite refreshment!). My party by the end consisted of these maxed classes: Bard/Commander Necromancer/Archmage [Redacted] Weapons Master (A dip into fighter for a few things) There are so many combinations and so many skills to rearrange to fit what you want. Equipment is also meaningful. The game is great. Go get it.

Eve of Calamity, developed and published by Klothscape, is a retro-inspired role-playing game that embraces the design philosophies of classic Japanese and Western RPGs while offering a modern sense of player freedom. Set in the vast empire of Asterna and its surrounding islands, the game centers on the looming return of a catastrophic threat once held at bay by a previous generation of heroes. You step into a world shaped by past sacrifice, political instability, and growing unrest, tasked not only with preparing for an impending apocalypse but also with carving out your own path in a land that does not revolve solely around a linear main quest. One of the defining characteristics of Eve of Calamity is its open-ended structure. From early in the game, players are free to explore the empire largely at their own pace. Rather than funneling you through a tightly scripted progression, the game allows you to take on quests in varying orders, pursue side activities, or even wander into dangerous territory long before you are fully prepared. This nonlinearity creates a sense of genuine exploration, where decisions about where to travel and which conflicts to engage with meaningfully shape your experience. Political tensions, civil unrest, monster infestations, and personal character stories coexist in the world, allowing the narrative to unfold organically rather than through rigid sequencing. Character progression is deep and highly customizable. With over twenty distinct classes available, players can shape their protagonist and companions in numerous ways. Each class offers unique abilities, strengths, and growth paths, encouraging experimentation with party composition and combat strategies. The game also features a wide array of active and passive skills that can dramatically alter how battles are approached. Equipment variety is substantial, ranging from simple weapons and armor to rare items that enhance specific builds. Recruiting companions further enriches the experience, as each potential party member contributes not only combat utility but also narrative flavor and personality. Combat operates within a traditional turn-based system, emphasizing strategy and resource management. Battles move at a brisk pace, avoiding excessive animations or downtime between actions. Positioning, skill synergy, and careful use of abilities are key to overcoming tougher encounters. Enemy variety increases as you explore more dangerous regions, requiring adaptation and thoughtful preparation. While the mechanics remain rooted in classic RPG design, the streamlined pacing ensures that combat remains engaging rather than repetitive. Exploration is central to the game’s identity. The empire of Asterna is expansive, with multiple towns, wilderness areas, and islands offering distinct challenges and rewards. Hidden dungeons, optional bosses, and lore-rich side quests encourage curiosity. Because the game does not heavily restrict where you can travel, stumbling into high-level areas early is possible, adding an element of risk to exploration. This design choice enhances immersion but also demands attentiveness from players who must gauge their readiness before venturing too far. Visually, Eve of Calamity embraces detailed pixel art reminiscent of early 1990s RPGs. Character sprites are expressive, environments are varied, and the overworld design conveys a sense of scale despite its retro presentation. The art direction prioritizes clarity while maintaining charm, allowing players to appreciate both combat and exploration without visual clutter. The soundtrack complements this aesthetic with compositions that evoke classic fantasy themes, enhancing immersion without overwhelming the experience. The game’s openness may not appeal to everyone. Players accustomed to clearly marked objectives and guided progression might initially find the freedom overwhelming. Difficulty can fluctuate depending on the order in which quests are tackled, and the lack of heavy hand-holding requires active engagement. However, for those who appreciate player agency and self-directed growth, this structure becomes one of the game’s greatest strengths. Ultimately, Eve of Calamity stands as a confident homage to classic RPG traditions while offering a flexible and player-driven adventure. Its expansive class system, open-world exploration, and strategic combat create a layered experience that rewards curiosity and experimentation. Rather than redefining the genre, it refines and celebrates it, providing a nostalgic yet thoughtfully constructed journey through a world on the brink of disaster. For players seeking a retro-styled RPG with depth and freedom, Eve of Calamity delivers a substantial and engaging experience that honors its inspirations while forging its own identity. Rating: 7/10
Fantastic Game was a bit lost at first on where to go and what to do since its been awhile since i played a game with so little hand holding but after i got my bearings its been great. Highly recommend if you have experience with this time of game and might update the review after some more hours but if its not updated nothing has changed buy it.
Fun game. Music can be maddening rarely. Gameplay is simple on the surface, but you can do some rather amusing combos, and I enjoyed the variety of characters that can join your party. I def got my money's worth
So far the game is awesome. Graphics sucks, but besides that it's an awesome game so far. So if you play games only for the graphics, turn around now. But if you want good gameplay, you should try it out. Even try the demo. I went in and bought it straight away, cause why not? :P So now I'm enjoying an awesome old style RPG
Finally got around to playing this. Scratches that old school rpg itch with a fun open world design. Edit: I finished the base game and DLC and enjoyed the experience.
Awesome little RPG, good for winding back and enjoying something that doesn't need that much commitment. Just don't gopin expecting to plow thorugh it, there is a lotto explroe,. but you might fell overwhelmed after a whilke. Finish the game, then do it again with a different build, don't try to do everything because it is quite impossible on the first run.
cool game, has room for improvement though
