escapegame timelessroom is a lazy and overpriced port of one of the entries in a free mobile game series. it's from 2020 and to be fair, they did some work on the backgrounds, it's not in portrait view but doesn't fill the screen either, so sure, ask a couple bucks for it, but $5 is just taking the piss. especially since the cursor doesn't highlight hotspots on mouseover. no dedicated hotspot indicator either, so it's just one big pixel hunt. no written narrative, only mood or vibe or whatever kids say these days. the 'how to play' section in the pause menu encourages in horrible english (also present on the store page) to escape this world by 'tapping' (but of course) items and gimmicks(?). so yeah, click everything in hopes of finding codes and puzzles and whatnot. acquiring the symbol of a planet unlocks the next location and things often change drastically. there are arrows for navigation and to back out of close-ups, unless it's an inventory item, then just click wherever. written hints for the next step are available in the pause menu and progress is saved automatically, inconveniently stored in the registry and gets wiped if you start a new game. I actually liked the trippy visuals, pretty cool imagery. music is fine if nothing memorable, and it changes with each screen. while it's not that abrupt it's still not great if you're just looking for the next thing to do. for some reason background music selection only unlocks after finishing the game. this and removing ads are the in-app purchases on mobile, so I guess that's the reason. the store page says more than 20 tracks but I only counted 17. maybe more is played during the game but not all of them can be selected. besides a few languages, there are no settings in the completely silent main menu. in the pause menu there are no volume settings, only separate toggles. music, sfx that only seems to be the 'click' of the ui, and 'stage' sfx, probably everything else. there's also a useless windowed mode toggle (non-resizable, full screen resolution), gotta edit the registry yourself if you want to change it. and the main staple of a lazy mobile port: no exit button. pretty pictures aside, it's not a competently-ported, enjoyable hour-long experience on pc, regardless of price. don't bother.
