ESCAPE SITE 13
Urgent Notice: Risks Involved in Exploring “Collection Item 229”
Despite deploying every available scientific method and research tool, the Research Institute remains unable to unravel the mystery of the enigmatic "Site 13." What little we know comes from the staggering collection of action records retrieved by Agent Liu Zhiming. These records—fragmented, like messages from a doomed island—each tell their own conflicting truths. Liu’s chilling words linger in our minds: “All records are true, for this place is forever His armor.”
Agent Liu is known for his unwavering honesty—his reports are not exaggerations. Now, the weight of interpreting these cryptic transmissions falls to us, the Communications Department.
ESCAPE SITE 13 transports players into a shadow-drenched, side-scrolling adventure inspired by the cryptic world of SCP containment lore. It unfolds in an original universe, picking up threads from SCP-1730, but weaving its own dark narrative. Players step into the shoes of Investigator Liu Zhiming, who must brave the newly unearthed structure dubbed "Site 13." As Liu, you will collect forgotten documents, decipher ancient puzzles, and uncover a labyrinthine history that has been buried in the dark for too long. With its immersive storytelling and richly detailed lore, ESCAPE SITE 13 invites both die-hard SCP fans and newcomers alike to plunge into the chaos of a secret that refuses to stay hidden.
In the aftermath of a catastrophic landslide, triggered by relentless downpours, a colossal mountain crumbles, revealing something that was never meant to be found: a sprawling, hidden facility buried within the rock. The Research Institute quickly names this mysterious discovery the "Hanging Coffin," and dispatches investigative teams to unlock its secrets. Yet, before they can even breach the entrance, the teams are crippled by unseen forces—memetic anomalies that attack the mind and leave their victims incapacitated.
In a desperate move, the Institute assembles the "Yu Gong" team, a group specifically chosen for their immunity to these mental assaults. However, their strength lies not in battle, but in their resilience. Their only hope rests in their leader, codename "Liezi"—the player-controlled Investigator Liu Zhiming.
As the team ventures deeper into the darkness of Site 13, they encounter horrors beyond comprehension. From the grotesque, ever-hungry "Leech Boy" to the twisted, unnatural distortions of space itself, the site becomes an ever-shifting maze of terror. What awaits them in the depths of this forsaken structure? What malevolent force caused the disasters that brought Site 13 into the light after all these years? Only through exploration, ingenuity, and survival will these answers be revealed—if they can be survived at all.
The haunting atmosphere of ESCAPE SITE 13 blends elements of suspense, mystery, and the macabre, immersing players in a world where reality bends, and nightmares become tangible. As Liu Zhiming, you are not just an investigator; you are the key to unlocking a truth that others have died trying to uncover. Will you piece together the shattered history of Site 13, or will you too become just another record lost in its endless depths?
Amazing adventure game set in a fictional universe of strange anomalies and creatures that evolves into a much deeper story. You play agent Liu, who is sent to the Mausoleum, a mysterious structure discovered within a rock somewhere in China. It appears to have been "transported" there from another location on Earth because the surrounding nature does not fit the China wilderness. After losing communication with the original team sent inside to investigate, you and your two squad members must now locate possible survivors and uncover the mystery of this location. The game is set in the fictional SCP universe and references to case SCP-1730. There is a lot of material available online, so you can read it before playing the game to gain some context. However, this is unnecessary because the game and your primary tool, the tablet, will provide you with plenty of information. The tablet has all you need to know. It is packed with backstory and will reveal new entries as you progress through the game. The amount of text is really incredible, and involves experiments, entities, religion, and gods. Entries are organized into folders such as notes, anomalies, posters, and so on. Each new entry will be labeled so you can find it easier. Art is also very good, starting with generic facility and slowly turning more otherworldly and weird. Because the game was developed in China, there were some concerns regarding the translation, particularly given the large amount of text with terminology and descriptions that can quickly become a nonsensical wall of text. I am pleasantly impressed that the translation and story are excellent. Another nice element is that the characters have voices. English is not available, yet the language makes sense given where the game takes place. Controls are straightforward because the game is based on experience and atmosphere. Aside from walking and interacting with hotspots, your only other skill is to jump, which allows you to deal with simple platforming challenges. When you get close enough, interesting areas are marked with a white diamond, and because you are primarily limited to going left or right, they are hard to miss. There is just one default action per hotspot. You will either push something, use it, or get a closer look. Most hotspots merely include a comment from the main character. They appear in the shape of thoughts. The rest consists of clues and tablet entries. When you get everything you can from a hotspot, it loses its interactivity and diamond icon. Clues are stored on your tablet and do not take any effort. At some points, you will need to insert the correct ones into squares and make a deduction, although you can try as many times as you want. There are some logical puzzles and glyph tracing, but most challenges involve finding something nearby. The facility is not safe. One of the threats is displacements, which might cause your head to explode or keep you stuck in time. Then there are a couple of chase and stealth sequences. Fortunately, there are rare and death is not a big concern because the game makes a checkpoint right before you die and allows you to quickly continue. However, a checkpoint does not save the game. If you do not want to lose a big chunk of progress, you have to finish the entire section or until you see a “saving” message. One small critique will matter if you are a completionist. Because the game is primarily linear, you can walk through a specific door and move the story forward without getting the chance to explore. Also, in some cases, you can pick between two approaches. The game will continue to its intended ending, although you may miss a tablet entry. Fortunately, you unlock a feature near the end of the game that lets you return to previous sections. Everything you’ve collected so far will stay, so you can try finding the missing entries. The bad news is that you have no idea where those entries can be found. Another bad news is that some achievements appear to be broken; I'm almost positive I did them, and the completion percentage is zero. There are no visible bugs. A handful of speech bubbles are not translated and one interaction shows letters at an incredibly slow speed, but the rest of the game plays very smoothly.
The lore and writing/translation is interesting and solid. The art is quirky but suitably gloomy. Unfortunately on Steam Deck, there's a spot where you right a large robot, where the game slowed, dropping frames, which was fine, but then I got frozen in place, even though animation of the robot continues. When the game slows like that, it also becomes impossible to ascend stairs, as the animation just shutters from left to right. So I missed one optional area. No big deal for me there, but possibly a problem for achievements. Mysteriously on the fourth try against the robot it didn't glitch there. So I progressed through some interesting stuff (avoiding spoilers too much) , and I defeated a large monster, and was supposed to choose from spooky words. The words are sometimes next to each other so closely that it glitches and doesn't show them, vibrating the cursor. In one case I was already selecting one for several moments when a second appeared next to it causing me to select the new one. One instance had both sayings overlapping the same place, preventing me from reading either or choosing the bottom one. After 6 full retries, I gave up. Another Let's Play shows this problem on PC as well. It was kind of interesting to try to choose the correct words, but having even more random chance of failure because of a glitch was too frustrating. Happy to change my review if this last glitch is fixed.
It is a good game overall. The Chinese voice acting is strong and does an excellent job of setting the tone (English subtitles available). However, the game would benefit from trimming excess content and adopting a tighter pacing. The full experience takes roughly eight hours to complete. (I played it for half then then I watched a video about it. It has really too many uneventful sections for my taste.) It opens with a long walking-simulator section focused on exploring environments and collecting documents to read. Then this is followed by a maze-like segment that again revolves primarily around navigation and document discovery. Only after roughly the first hour does the game transition into its more eventful and engaging sequences.
I found this to be an interestin' take on the SCP formula. It's a side scroller with horror elements. It has voice actin' but not in English. That is a bummer but it is subtitled. I like the graphic style as well. The colors pop. Not usually thing in the horror sphere. I didnt get too far but am still intrigued. The price tag may be a bit much to some, however. I'll give it a thumb up for the intrigue. Gameplay Impressions: https://youtu.be/nnyFUyNGB7U
