Puzzle Dating

Puzzle Dating is, well, not a dating game, it's a dating themed minimalist match 3 that makes Candy Crush look like a software engineering masterpiece to rival Skyrim. All you do is match three or more blocks of the same colour to work towards a goal. You have a limited set of moves and you can shift rows of blocks in any direction by tapping on your iPhone screen. Well, that's presumably what the developer intended for this garbage, but it's apparently never hit the app stores it was designed for. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", M. Hanka has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes Puzzle Dating might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Puzzle Dating is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

I actually hate this game. . .it's a puzzle game that is 50% based on luck. There's a chart where you can move rows, columns, or individual colors to match in patterns of three or more. It seems like a neat concept but playing is really annoying. The first thirty minutes, I unlocked 14/15 achievements. There's an achievement to get through nine dates, it took me the remaining hour and a half I played to get that achievement and I enjoyed none of it.

Simple puzzle game on dating subject. Looks nice, UI is good, puzzle moving is smooth, colors are pleasant for eyes. Big set of characteristics and faces (but i found ladies here more attractive, hehehe). Most of achievements are very easy to get. It is nice, I recommend it.

Light on the dating, but calculating gameplay.[/i] Puzzle Dating is a short and sweet 3-in-a-row puzzler overlaid with a dating theme. If you're a fan of this type of game you'll probably spend more time on it that I have, but I enjoyed playing it nonetheless. The game is relaxing yet calculating in nature - can you get all the points you need within the number of moves remaining? There is no time limit so you can take all the time you need. Each of your dates has a personality that dictates the size of their Comfort, Attraction and Arousal meters. These each correspond to a color on the board. This means that you'll sometimes struggle to get enough matches of a particular color. Making matches of 4 or more tiles in a row counts as "humor" and will give you a smiley-faced wild card which can connect with every color and even grant you an extra move if you play them. The game's difficulty increases with each successive date, mostly by making the board smaller or irregular or creating holes in the center and corners. Luckily this game has a game mechanic that I haven't encountered in other 3-in-a-row games: You can shift an entire row or column at the cost of just one move. If you're lucky this can line up two or more matches for you to make afterwards. As far as the dating aspect goes, don't expect too much. There are no second dates with the same person or anything like that. That's a shame, considering it's called Puzzle [i]Dating[/i], after all. You can date both men and women, and before each date you can choose from either two men, two women, or one of each, depending on your chosen options. All in all, a short yet fun game that's perfect for when you want to do something quick and relaxing.
