Competitive, frustrating and nice designed. It has simple but compelling mechanics. I've been following it since the Early Access phase. The new version has made it a better game. It's great that the controller is customizable and has full Xbox Controller support. With v3, I noticed that the designs of the levels I had previously completed had changed. There were also character additions and new improvements. It was fun to replay the old levels and improve my Best Time. It's nice that it has a story, even if it's simple. As a player, I know why I'm playing the game. I like the graphics in these types of games to be pixel-based. It reflects the retro spirit. Even the normal price is too cheap for this game. definitely buy it. I recommend 10/10. I hope the developer makes this game over 100 levels. Because it is very fun.
A great game. Completing the levels is addictive. You don't want to quit. It's up to you to be patient and complete the levels...
Escape from Spikes, developed by Biversen and Ytsejam Game and published by Ytsejam Game, is a minimalist precision platformer built around quick reflexes, careful movement, and a constant sense of danger. The game strips the platforming genre down to its most essential elements, presenting players with a simple objective: survive hazardous levels filled with spikes while collecting items and finding a path to the exit. Rather than relying on story-driven progression or complex mechanics, the game focuses entirely on the challenge of navigating carefully constructed stages where even the smallest mistake can lead to instant failure. The premise is intentionally straightforward and serves primarily as a framework for the gameplay. Players control a small character trapped inside a series of dangerous environments where spikes dominate nearly every surface. The goal of each stage is to gather valuable items—such as gems and keys—while making it safely to the exit door. Although the narrative itself remains minimal, the sense of urgency created by the hostile environments gives the game a clear motivation: escape the deadly labyrinth before running out of chances. Gameplay unfolds within a traditional 2D side-scrolling perspective, where players guide their character through compact levels filled with obstacles and traps. The controls are deliberately simple, allowing the player to run and jump with precision while focusing entirely on movement and timing. Because the mechanics are easy to understand, the challenge arises from the layout of each level. Platforms are often narrow, hazards are positioned strategically, and jumps must be executed with accuracy to avoid landing on spikes. Spikes act as the central threat throughout the entire game. Nearly every level features multiple spike traps placed along floors, ceilings, and walls. Contact with these hazards instantly defeats the player, forcing them to restart from the beginning of the level or a designated checkpoint. This design creates a high-stakes environment where every movement must be calculated carefully. Even a slight misjudgment in distance or timing can send the character directly into a trap. Levels in Escape from Spikes are generally short but packed with hazards, creating intense bursts of challenge that encourage players to retry repeatedly. A player might complete a stage in under a minute once they understand its layout, but learning the safe routes often requires several attempts. This structure fits well with the game’s arcade-inspired philosophy, where mastering levels through repetition and practice becomes the core gameplay loop. Collectibles scattered throughout the levels add an additional layer of challenge for players who want to fully complete each stage. Gems and gold items are placed in risky locations that require precise jumps or detours from the safest route. Players can ignore some of these items if they simply want to reach the exit quickly, but completionists will likely attempt to gather everything available. This optional risk–reward system encourages exploration and adds replay value to the levels. The game also features a generous number of achievements tied to completing levels, collecting items, and progressing through the various challenges. These achievements act as long-term goals that encourage players to continue refining their performance and exploring every corner of the game. For players who enjoy achievement hunting, the large number of unlockable goals provides additional motivation to revisit earlier levels and improve their results. Visually, Escape from Spikes uses a retro pixel-art style that reflects its simple design philosophy. The graphics are intentionally minimal, focusing on clarity rather than complexity. Platforms, spikes, and collectibles are clearly distinguishable, allowing players to quickly recognize hazards even during tense moments. The clean visual design helps ensure that players can focus entirely on the platforming challenges without being distracted by unnecessary details. The audio presentation follows the same minimalist approach. Background music provides a steady rhythm that complements the pacing of the gameplay, while sound effects give immediate feedback when the player jumps, collects items, or meets an unfortunate end on a spike trap. Although the soundtrack is relatively simple, it maintains the energetic arcade-like atmosphere that fits the game’s structure. Despite its engaging challenge, the game’s limited mechanics can make the experience feel repetitive over time. Because spikes are the primary hazard and the gameplay revolves around the same basic movement mechanics throughout, later stages may feel similar to earlier ones. Players who prefer platformers that gradually introduce new abilities or gameplay variations might find the progression somewhat predictable. However, the simplicity of Escape from Spikes is also part of its appeal. By focusing entirely on precision movement and hazard avoidance, the game delivers a pure platforming challenge that rewards patience and skill. The short levels and quick restarts make it easy to jump back into the action after failure, encouraging players to keep trying until they finally achieve a perfect run. Ultimately, Escape from Spikes is a straightforward but satisfying indie platformer designed for players who enjoy challenging gameplay built around precise timing and careful control. It may not offer expansive worlds or complex mechanics, but it succeeds in delivering the kind of intense, skill-based platforming experience that many fans of the genre appreciate. Rating: 6/10
Nice game design and great gameplay! Each level feels like a fresh challenge—part maze, part parkour—where you need to collect all coins to unlock the next stage. But there’s a twist: with every coin you collect, your speed increases, making it harder to stay in control. Can you handle the pressure and grab the key? Test your skills and reflexes—it's definitely worth it, even at full price (+ tip)! It’s still in early access, so jump in, help test, and share your ideas to shape the game’s future! 🎮🔥
"Escape from Spikes" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This is a particularly bad, painfully generic 2D pixel platformer with no notable narrative or anything, it's just a game of "jump the robot over the spikes". Both the robots and the spikes look a bit like they're flipped assets, too, with a few tweaks and changes, you know, like re-writing the assignment in your own handwriting after you bullied the class nerd to do your homework for you. That's exactly what this garbage feels like. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? "Escape from Spikes" is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Pros: Very fun and challenging game, much like celeste which i love the menu is great and looks cool settings and concept is pretty cool Cons: controls are not the best on keyboard but luckily my controller worked there should be more details simple controls, could add dash or something.. but very fun i enjoyed playing.
Hi, tried out this game and here are my views: Pros: - Smooth gameplay, played for 2 hours and didn't come across any bugs or glitches - Easy to pick up, fun platformer, has some difficult levels, but you enjoy playing them - The whole variety of enemies make it quite interesting and challenging - I also whole concept of increasing slippery with coins collections making it difficult while progressing - Options to customize the keys-controls mapping Cons: - Didn't support my pc controller - The keyboard mapping uses arrow keys and spacebar, traditionally left hand is used for movements and right for jumps etc.., (Not a big deal, as I could mapping custom controls) - Could provide more customizations, the color option only provides three colors and only yellow looks good because the red and green paint everything red including eyes, which makes it less appealing - it's pixel art, so putting it full screen made the text a bit weird
This is a really fun little game to play in free time, i loved playing this game in my free time from work when i needed to relax a bit its cheap too so totally worth purchasing.
