It is one of the most mechanically dense deckbuilders I’ve played. The build variety is enormous, however, mechanical depth is not the same as strategic depth. If you want: - Deep deckbuilding - High mechanical expressiveness - A build laboratory with enormous flexibility This delivers. If you want: - Campaign-level tension - Meaningful macro consequences - A world that evolves and resists you That's where it fails TLDR: Impressive system design. Limited experiential immersion. I would recomment it but with reservatons
I played Erannorth Chronicles previously, and liked it so much, I thought I'd give this earlier game a go. I didn't have high expectations, I heard that it wasn't as polished, and I have enabled many graphics updates mods to enhance the experience. But I love this game, I may even be enjoying it more than Chronicles, because although it has all the complexity and customization that made Chronicles an amazing experience, Reborn, with its emphasis on gauntlet modes paired with the extensive tutorials (in the Discussion boards on Steam) have been less overwhelming and more linear than Reborn. I've read in prior reviews that it isn't necessary to learn Reborn before moving into Chronicles, that they are two distinctly different rule sets, and this is true! But the openness of Chronicles with its sandbox-focus, or rather the linearity of Reborn, means that with Reborn I feel I'm learning the game in a deeper and more appreciative way, and when I return to Chronicles, I'm going to get even more out of the experience. These games are truly a labor of love and vision by the single author, they are unique masterpieces combining everything I love about roguelike deckbuilders with character customization and story events immersed in an imaginative fantasy world rich with monsters, treacherous foes, magic, treasures and strategic alliances. I can't wait to see Erannorth Renaissance when it's released. Love this game! I only wish there were more games like it.
Eranorth Reborn has deep and complex systems that require you to delve into great detail to understand the multifaceted implications of every single tiny decision. But you know, just click anything and things mostly turn out fine none of the choices really matter the cards virtually play themselves and it just works out. Look, I'm sure with extensive time investment this gets "better" or at least remotely engaging later in the game. But it needed to be better sooner and wasn't. So this isn't a hard "No" on recommended. But it is still a "No". Oh. And for what it is... Half the price. It wouldn't have rated a "No" at half the price.
The good: - There are a lot of cards to choose from The bad: - Forced difficulty - Poor balance - Poor graphics (literally the ugliest thing I've seen since the 90's) I would forgive this game if it was well-balanced, or was innovative in some way, but it is not. The game play is also very shallow, to the point that I thought this was in Early Access. Instead there are over $30 worth of DLCs. No thanks!
good
This game should not be as fun as it is, but it gets the essence of card-based roguelikes, with huge options, and just FUN, without being annoying and TOO difficult.
It's neat, although it didn't quite catch me. There's an absolute heap of content here, and more storytelling than I expected to string it together, but it's also more than a little clunky. Everything is "alt click to bring up this tooltip" and the game comes with a player's guide---it expects you to dig fairly deep into systems and menus if you want to master it. I think the engine here could be used for a very compelling single player story, and by relying on procedural generation it covers more ground but in a less satisfying way. I do think the card game mechanics are great, but they're just clunky enough to not quite hit the Slay The Spire sweet spot where they're good enough to carry a lack of story. As best I can tell, this is an extremely ambitious project by a solo dev and I think that's worth supporting. However, you might want to start with one of the later Erranorths and come back here if you really liked that one. Edit: Tragically, the second title uses a crapton of AI. If that's a dealbreaker for you, you should get this one instead.
a good game, 80/100+
