An open-world, card-battling RPG. Tons of cards with lots of complex interlinked mechanics and synergies, making for a ton of build variety. Sadly the game is chock-full of ai art and the developer is full-steam ahead on more genAI assets for his next game. It's just not a practice worth supporting.
“Quantity over quality” and “not a game you can evaluate in 2 hours” and “definitely not worth the full price”. I can compare this to “Eador: genesis”, another game by a solo dev, and that one is the epitome of “quality” - has in depth storytelling, mechanics and satisfying progression. Erannorth is a collection of different systems that kinda live together, but don’t really fit well. For example the stat system is supposed to influence derived attributes, like I get +10 bludgeoning damage at 30 strength. Sounds all RPG-ish until you see that even mid game, level-ish 15 enemies routinely have 30-50 of some resistance (they just take -50 bludgeoning damage). Why? Because! And that makes the RPG system seem out of place. Why would I spend 3 levels worth of learning points to pump “agility” past 16 points to get +1 action points , when there are perks that give free action points and my level 15 character has 50 AP? It seems like the RPG system does not hold up beyond the first 3 levels or so. The same learning points issue means that I can only maintain 2-3 skills, and the rest fall behind. This means that the loot tables start to look boring. The early game is much better, with multiple cards offered from multiple skills, but that never happens once some skills fall behind. I’m like 40 hours into the game and still see new enemy sprites, but that does not fill me with joy. All the enemies use the same mechanics, with the same limited set of actions (they have the same attack, shield, heal/regen; limited summons) , except new sprites say “new enemy” and I can’t see their intents. I mean this is a creative use of AI art and all, but that does not really make *new* enemies. Once I got the grasp of the skill level system - clicking on that skill icon, the game becomes “do I really need anything from this skill at 15 points?” And the answer is frequently no - all equipment and gear is visible and deterministic, there are no surprises, and most of it is level and skill locked (and deck size locked!) So yeah, I can build a lot of different card combos, but there isn't enough “game” to apply them to. Further immersion breaking (it’s all sprites on a spreadsheet) is that I can “befriend” or “seduce” some eldrich chutlu kind of horror from the depth or pay it 25 farthings for it to go take a hike. These enemies have nothing unique to them. Again, compare this to “Eador: Genesis”, especially the “new horizons” mod, where I do need to inspect the enemy to find a weakness to exploit. That game has no “ome size fits all” cookie cutter approach from Erannorth.
The customization is every bit as complex and immensely varied as the game claims to have. This is a good thing. What is not a good thing is that every single card has multiple effects, and from what little I saw in my hour of trying it out the majority of them were pretty overwhelming -- this game doesnt work with simple things like 'enter stealth' or something like that. instead it jumps straight to 'lose 4% concealment, do 4 damage, if losing 4% concealment is impossible, gain 4% concealment'. Playing any of this game as a new player felt like trying to learn to swim from someone giving you a few sentences of basic description of what swimming was and dropping you in a lake.
This is a very good game with incredible amounts of depth and replayability. There's an absolutely expansive breadth of content and it's really rewarding to explore it. The only thing that's stopping this from being one of my favorite games of all time that I played for 1000 hours is the thoughtless encounter design. To ramp up difficulty the game just keeps adding more enemies to your fights instead of balancing encounters with smaller groups of stronger enemies. Additionally, the groups of enemies aren't thematic. A typical battle could be like 2 demons 2 orcs 2 human villagers 1 plant 1 ghoul and 1 insect. Facing nothing but increasingly large hordes of random monsters is really uninteresting and narrows the pool of strategies to try by a lot. But that's it. This game is a year of thoughtful encounter design away from being a game I would never shut up about to anyone who will listen. As it is, I loved my time with it, but instead of being a 10/10 it's a 7/10.
I offered my help on the forum, in return for a base version of a 5 year old, pretty unknown and unpopular game, because i was mildly interested in trying it out, but not enough, to actually wanting to purchase it, and since theres no demo, wanted to give something back. Well, instead of an answer, i got laughed at. Which tells me more than enough about the developer. Well, i hope it was a good laugh, dev, because i will never again support you in any way, and honestly regret that i spent money on the Reborn-Collection. A person like you simply doesnt deserve it.
It's a complex deckbuilding game with a steep learning curve. That's not a bad thing if there's enough payoff for learning the game, but for me the payoff just isn't there. The UI is too clunky and gameplay feels too abstract to really enjoy the game.
This game is the deckbuilder's deckbuilder. There are so many different ways to play and find cool decks, with a character 'perk system' to further customize your builds and synergies. Somehow despite being the purest deckbuilder I've ever seen, the developer managed to make a competent single player game out of it with quests and exploration. Highly recommend for fans of the genre.
So ... this thing costs money ... and I think it should not. Oh and I'm seeing a ton of paid dlc, great. So from my experience this is very raw, unpolished, unexplained bs. Fairly I created something not very playable where half of my cards do nothing. It was Hag-Monk-Feral or something. Getting new cards is hard and unreliable, half of my cards are non-functional ( like buff companion which I usually dont have, I think I have a Goat which 1 was able to summon once because it seems it needs money to be summoned which I don't have, also I have shapeshift card ... that does nothing, and 10 cards that hit for 1 damage ). Every encounter killed me for like until lvl 3-4. All I did was hitting 1st location. If you fight mobs for too long you get another pack into the fight. It's a hard fight for you ? - Too bad fk u! Battle and stat/skill system is ok I guess, and I could tackle that maybe - but why ? What is the purpose ? There is like 1 game in like 360 days that I played and felt worse. So ... I don't really care about money that I spend on games, but in this case I'd refund.
Do you like cards? Do you enjoy autismmaxxing builds? This is the game
