I recommend it to some players BUT it's a very specific group of players. I gotta start by saying the art design is great. Incredibly eye-catching with all the colors and angles. Premium style! Anyway, Epitaph's gameplay is kinda like the line battle system in Darkest Dungeon. And they really leaned into the mechanic. For example, one of the reapers can headbutt an enemy to knock it into a different spot. Another example, one of the characters can attack in front of or behind them. You're stuck in the 2D but there's still a lot of movement and options. Even with 13 characters, they're all simple to learn. Epitaph has a low skill floor but a high skill ceiling. Those 13 distinct characters are the best part of the game. Imagining the almost infinite ways each of them can interact. Pushing enemies around while lining up attacks where you expect them to be. However, your opponent isn't going to make it easy. They're going to be doing the exact same with three of their own characters. A large part of the game is going to be creating the best team of three reapers and perfecting how they work together. I'm sure some incredible combos are waiting to be found. You should keep in mind the game is played in real-time. You can input all your moves right as the match starts. But you'll have to wait as they recharge to make another move. It could potentially leave you open to attack. But it could also set your reapers into great positions. Also, the reapers do not die after the first death. Weird way to say they come back to life several times, stronger than before. Two players battling it out at the same time would be intense. Which is the main game mode. It's a 1v1 battle. It's problematic for me since there's no way for me to experience it. There's no AI to battle against and the few times I tried there was no one playing online. Local mode isn't an option for me either. The only thing left is puzzle mode. It's good and there are plenty of stages. They start off easy and teach each character. However, with only two moves per character, you could brute force your way through the puzzle by trying all options. I can see the beauty of the system. My personal issue is it's not my kind of fun. Overall, Epitaph is good and a really well-made game I'm worried no one is going to play. The curse of a low population PvP game. There doesn't need to be a million players, there only needs to be some players. I recommend it if you're going to pick it up with friends (local or online). The puzzle play is a good addition and worth it if you're really interested in the line combat but ultimately not enough to draw in most players.
