Playing status: 100% achievement Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (24 achievements). Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals is an RPG Maker game that is focused on dungeon delving. It features 12+1 dungeons with unique enemies that you have to explore with 3-4 party members. Pros: - 4 difficulties which can be changed anytime - Quick replay for fights - Touch-based encounters Cons: - Combat heavily relies on RNG, especially if you want to finish all dungeons with platinum ranking - You need to backtrack to the dungeon entrance manually after every boss fights - Lack of MP regen and limited free heals Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
No. There is just too many RNG involved in combat. Unless if you don't mind retrying a battle over and over again, I suggest not buying this game.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
The game looks unique compared to other RPG Maker games. Characters look like 3D models due to their heavy use of shadows despite being 2D. It also offers a lot of dungeons with different themes, making each dungeon to be unique on its own.
Story
The story feels all over the place. Dialogues are not plenty, although the game tries to fit as many facts as possible without making you feel overwhelmed. However, the story can be too fast sometimes. People reveal their plot casually to their enemies, enemies changing their mind just with one or two sentences - everything makes the story feels weird and unpolished. I admit that I liked one of the plot twists that the game has, but that's pretty much everything that I liked about the story. The dialogues aren't enjoyable to read either. The game will try to put sex jokes and derogatory statements from time to time, making it unpleasant to read. There is an option to disable these dialogues on the setting, but since I played with the options enabled, I couldn't tell how effective it is. Besides, I think that these kinds of dialogues are unnecessary at all. Some dialogues even feel out of place because of it.
The Game
Gameplay The game has dungeon delving as its focus. There are 12+1 stages that you can select, each with different themes and enemies to fight. Most are locked at the beginning and will be unlocked after you cleared the previous stages. The good thing is that you can always come back to the earlier stages to either farm money or EXP, or both. You will be graded based on your performance in battle. The maximum grade that you can get is three stars, with one obtained by defeating the enemy, another obtained by defeating it without taking a certain amount of damage, and the last one can be obtained by defeating it within a certain amount of turns. Each battle has a different number for the last two metrics, which is determined based on the enemies' difficulty. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=524700389 Retries The retry button makes the fight easier. As a game that focuses on your performance in battle, having a retry button is helpful. You need to find an enemy's weakness by trying out all of the elemental damage to it, or even figure out which skill that you need to use to defeat them in fewer turns without using too many resources. While this all looks interesting, it doesn't come with its disadvantages either. First, combat is heavily affected by RNG. This becomes more apparent if you are aiming for three stars in all battles since you need to make sure that all of your hits are connected. Enemies can also hit very hard, making you want to avoid damage. CC skills such as blind or silence become a very helpful arsenal in this game, except that it has low accuracy, especially in later stages. These skills miss 4 out of 5 times every time in battle, and I couldn't just stop using them since enemies will damage my party too much than what the game allows for three stars. I don't understand why the game doesn't have a fixed hit chance - that would make battles to be more focused on strategy rather than pure luck. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=525570200 Another thing that proves the game to be RNG-based lies in its limit breaker system. The limit breaker works as a chance for a double hit after you cast a certain skill, providing you with a bar where you must press at a certain timing to deal the extra damage. Although I liked how it works, it all comes to RNG again. Yes, the limit breaker doesn't always appear after you cast a skill, and I found that a higher damaging skill to have a lower chance of triggering it. This makes it hard to finish the fight effectively since you will be either outdps-ing the enemy due to triggering it or not having enough damage to kill the enemy because it is not triggered. Lastly, your resource is limited. There are hardly any free heals that you can take throughout the level, forcing you to either use items or pay a certain amount of money to fully heal your party outside the battle, similar to how inn works in RPG Maker games. As someone who hates using items, I still managed to finish the game without it except at the final boss fight, but not without a lot of retries and patience. Moreover, the NPC that can fully heal your party is also gone at the last two stages, forcing you to ration your HP and MP to beat the enemies. The thing is, trying to get three stars in all battles will force you to use more MP than necessary, and the RNG-based combat for the limit breaker isn't helping either. Combat All unpleasantness aside, combat is good. Enemies are unique to each dungeon, and they all have different weaknesses. Although you just need to know which elemental skill to use, you still need to try out the combinations whenever you meet an enemy for the first time. The retry button helps a lot for this. Bosses are challenging. Despite dealing lower damage than you can heal, they will do an AoE attack sometimes. You don't have AoE heal until later in the game, and that skill heals a very low amount of HP later on. It's all a battle whether you can defeat the boss before you are going down or lucky enough to still manage your party without trouble. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 15.3h. The game offers 4 difficulties, ranging from "cheat", which I assumed as very easy, to "heroic", which I assumed as very hard. I played the game in the "normal" difficulty early on and switched to "easy" at around stage 6 since I couldn't beat the boss in that dungeon. To be honest, I was already frustrated from playing the game at that point because of the misses, and toning down the difficulty helped to some extent. The game might be easier if you are willing to use potions, but since they can be costly, I'm not sure if you need to grind to get enough of them until the final boss.
Conclusion
Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals might have an interesting battle concept, but it's all ruined due to the RNG factor. It's not fun to retry a fight over and over again just because you missed a skill, which is needed to land to prevent the enemy from dealing too much damage to your party. The limit breaker is also too unreliable because of the same reason, making it hard to formulate a strategy that works in every combat. While I liked playing a game that is heavily focused on combat, I don't like being forced to use items or even doing it while being mindful of both my HP and MP. Unless if you want to experience the same frustration as me, I wouldn't recommend playing this game.
Visit SaveOrQuit.com for detailed game reviews, posted daily!
Started this game back in 2015 and abandoned. In 2021 decided to give it one more try. I am not a big fan of RPG Maker games, but this one is quite actually well made. Combat becomes harder everytime, every tougher battle requires you to plan ahead and try out different tactics (good thing there is a RETRY button). The fire dragon and Emperor fights made me overthink my strategies. In total the game is quite nice, battle music is nice, recommend to try it out. (Lot of running around and collecting stuff ingame)
无趣而又枯燥的RPG Maker游戏 奇差无比的优化,整个游戏过程始终都是卡卡卡卡的感觉

So I kind of have mixed feelings about this game... TL;DR at the end. First off, I need to say it was the first RPG game I've ever played, as far as I remember. It was hard to get into it at first, as I didn't understand anything about combat, weapons, accessories, skills, etc. But when I started understanding the basics and getting pretty good at it I began enjoying this game a lot. However, I soon realized I couldn't get perfect ratings on previous fights I failed; this made me mad. I had to restart a save to possibly get the stars I missed for a perfect ranking. When I realized this, as well as the battles getting ridiculously hard (nearly impossible unless in easy difficulty) and the boss battles getting literally impossible to 3-star (even in easy difficulty), I just gave up on combat: turned encounters off, enabled 'Cheat' difficulty and only continued my playthrough for the story. At some points I just wished the game was over. I thought combat was overall pretty boring (especially when you're losing and have to retry over and over to have a chance at a 3-star), not intuitive since you don't know which of your characters will attack first, and very frustrating because of the difficulty but also because of other things such as not knowing why your attacks miss, the fact that you can missclick and heal/cure a character who doesn't need it, etc. The exploration felt weird, as you have to go through multiple levels as if you are playing a platformer game. The only things you can interact with are chests, switches, monsters and sometimes other characters. As I am not an avid jRPG player, it didn't bother me much though. Eventhough I overall disliked combat, which is the main part of the game, there are some good points too. The first stages are pretty easy (especially the desert stage) and were really cool to play since you don't have problems defeating the ennemies. I have to say, the story surprised me, I thought at first it was going to be fully ironic, sort of mocking other games of that kind through the entire game. But no, I actually really enjoyed it! It wasn't completely sex-oriented like I thought while playing the first few levels. While the story is kind of a big joke, I don't think it was really cringe-worthy and I was actually stupefied at how it completely turned when I didn't expect it. The characters didn't talk at all in some levels which I found disappointing. Furthermore, I freaking loved the music! The boss battle theme and the 'Plane Of The Lost Souls' theme were my favorites, I will totally do a youtube search to listen to these themes again. So, overall I don't think it is worth the 10 dollars, even with the great story and very enjoyable music. if you can get it during sales, go for it, but at this price I cannot recommend it. TL;DR: Hard to get into it, exploration felt a bit weird, pretty boring and not intuitive combat that gets impossible at some point, can't get perfect ranking if you failed fights. On the good side surprisingly pretty good story and amazing music. Don't recommend for 10 dollars. 4/10
RPG Maker strikes again! "Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account they use to try hide their identity have managed to push yet another extremely poorly written Final Fantasy RPG Maker asset flip. The plot is painfully generic, the writing awful, but it is accompanied by some completely godawful "baby's first Wacom tablet" artwork that would have had whoever came up with it banned from DeviantArt for life... it's just that bad. In a surprise to nobody, the encounter and level design is amateurish and crap, and now the engine... As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. "Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals" has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for playing the game for more than 1 hour, trivial to achieve, if you can stomach it, but less than 4 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 4 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who weren't even playing the game? Trading cards. Players will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. "Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals" has the far too high price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.

I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
