(game complete at just under 8 hours of gameplay at time of review, part of my review all my games effort) (Short version) This game would have been amazing to play in 2013, I've had it for a while and it's taken 13 years to play it. Enjoyable from start to finish, nothing too complicated and extremely easy on normal mode. That's not a detractor from the fun and 8 hours is the perfect amount of time it doesn't over or under stay it's welcome. $20 is the perfect price for what you get.
What knucklehead makes these games? Where, for no apparent reason, the camera's POV automatically and unilaterally shifts to various directions depending on, apparently, nothing at all, so the key you're supposed to use for going in one particular direction switches from w to A to S to D regularly, for no obvious reason. Christ, I haven't seen one of these abortions for nearly 20 years. I thought we'd put this kind of garbage behind us. Although that Bandai label should have been a red flag. Never could decide if they were making an FPS, an over-the-shoulder, or a side-scroller so they keep trying to combine all three types into the same game.
I saw a trailer for this game when I was in middle school. It is nice to finally have closure.
Great 7th Gen hidden gem made by Ninja Theory (before they would go onto make the DMC Reboot) with fun combat and an interesting short story which also stars the great Andy Serkis. Worth a play,
I've been taking a Trip down memory lane replaying my old favorites on the steam deck and I am amazed how well this one holds up even today. It is a blast from start to finish and a cult classic for a good reason.
Visuals, world building
The main selling point of the game was how cinematic it was. Some big hollywood names were attached back when it meant something and it really showed. The characters look good and are very expressive even by today's standards. The cutscenes still look very cinematic. Sure the textures and the environmental details could use un upgrade now, but the artwork is timeless. I think Horizon Zero Dawn took a lot of inspiration from this game. There are a lot of similarities in the worlds: post apocalyptic but very colorful, beastlike mechs roaming the land and the people are living like savages. Of course the world of HZD is much more fleshed out, but the characterization in this game is miles ahead.
Story
This game was made in an era were they put real effort into the writing, and they tried to actually appeal to their core audience: young guys/boys. There are no arrogant girl bosses here who know it all and can do it all. No pathetic men who are just there to be made the butt of the jokes. Instead, there are three dimensional characters with realistic strengths and weaknesses. Trip is a very capable hacker but physically vulnerable. She is a cunning survivor who needs to resort to questionable things to survive, but she's conflicted by them as well. Monkey is a loner relying on brute force and agility. Huge, strong, he lived his whole life alone to maximize his survival chances. He is forced into becoming a protector of Trip at first, then he grows into the role willingly. Peak male role model. Later in the game a comic relief character is introduced which leads to the funniest situations and banter in any game I can remember. The ending does feel a bit rushed but it's a satisfying conclusion nonetheless.
Gameplay
It's pretty simplistic, but it's fun. The platforming is completely on the rails but at the later half of the game at least some timing constraints makes it a bit more engaging. The combat feels good, however, it doesn't evolve much during the playtime, so by the end it feels a bit stale. The pacing is very good though, platforming, combat and puzzles alternate in a good mix.
Verdict
This is totally worth playing now if you've missed it before. A remake or a sequel would be amazing but it will never happen as the game flopped financially on release.
It's a good game, has the 7th generation charm all over it. The platforming is easy, combat is clunky but fun, story is a bit weird but interesting. You do end up caring for the characters along the way. The graphics still hold up decently well in my opinion. You'll definitely enjoy the base game if you have some nostalgia for the early 2010's games. The DLC infuriated me quite a bit though, it forces you to play stealthily when the base game mechanics are not built for it. On top of that, in certain sections it leaves you right in the open forcing you to attack making you feel handicapped. It also goes on for way too long. I'd recommend you to get it cheap on a sale, play the base game and skip the DLC.
