Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

About

Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship. Grow your fleet while exploring an expansive galaxy with hundreds of systems. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, mining asteroids, or plundering and capturing enemy ships.

Enter the 31st century and choose from one of multiple starting locations and backgrounds where you set out on your own journey as the captain of a new ship. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy at your own pace. The main story line alone takes about 8-16 hours to play through, with over a hundred hours worth of story content spread across the galaxy in the form of other story lines both big and small.

The game's content can be added to using the plugin system, which allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, missions, and more to the game. All of the game's content is built using the same system, so anything you see in the vanilla game can be done in a plugin. The capabilities of plugins are fully documented on our GitHub wiki.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). The game has been developed for over 10 years as a labor of love from hundreds of volunteer contributors. Updates occur regularly with three major updates every year. Over time, the game will continue to expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, artwork, gameplay mechanics, quality-of-life improvements, and more.

Game is already free as a 0.1.2 version so I checked the box but this was not a compensated endorsement. The game is so good it doesn't need an endorsement. Just play it! If you're of my generation and played the Ambrosia Software series of Escape Velocity games for Mac back in the day, this is the clone. Yes you can still play EV Nova, Classic and Override (there's an official discord for those), but this is a modern interface and the same idea. 2D top-down space combat. Infinite game, good missions, good progression, death does not "nuke" your progress you can just start over, and lots of customization. Love love love!
so good I swear

good game
Feels exactly like the spiritual successor to Escape Velocity should feel. Adds things that don't make it feel too different, while opening up limitations of the old games and adding more fun and things to explore. Well-made, comfy to play for hours, one of those rare gems that's exactly what you wanted it to be.
Yes this is a very good space game
Its the best ope source game ever and i recomend it for all fans of sci-fi games and spaceship lovers. It also has a very good story and is made with love...
Captures the spirit of the classic Escape Velocity series, but with a lot of QoL improvements and streamlining (e.g. better jump plotting, and you don't need to buy fuel). Storylines are *fine*. There don't appear to be many different branches to follow, you basically either do a storyline or you don't (as opposed to choosing sides in a big conflict and having different options following that). Kind of a pro in that you don't have to miss out on anything in a single playthrough, but makes decisions seems a little superfluous.
Good game. An excellent example how to achieve great results with seemingly small resources. It works, it is moddable, and even vanilla is quite fun to play. Player actions somehow feels meaningful - What you do may actually impact universe. You are not center of story. You just happen to be there, what happens next is up to you. How will you live, what will you do, what challenge you impose on yourself - your choice. I do dislike some parts of it - fighter implementation, small-ship combat, some equipment parameters, but it is personal dislike, and not the fundamental game flaw. Anyway, highly recommended to play and enjoy.
