SNAPSHOT
An unfinished middle school class project, at best.
OVERALL - 1.5 / 10

PROS
+ satisfying combat / movement mechanics
CONS
- extremely buggy, frustrating, and unfinished - horrible interface / options - art was ripped from every classic SNES game you can think of
FULL REVIEW
I have to be honest, I have no idea how some people are saying this is the "best game they've ever played", unless they've never played any other games or they're acquainted with the developer somehow. Atrocious does not even begin to describe how terrible it is. This game looks and feels like a pre-alpha build, and plays like an unfinished project for a class of middle schoolers. One of the dialogues, for instance, says an NPC has a pet eagle named Cheeseburger, and the art feels like it was taken directly from default stock content, placed somewhere in the game, and then forgotten about. Actually, most of the art and animations look like they were ripped straight out of other games and "repurposed" for this one. Whether this is meant to be an homage to oldschool games or just a lack of any other ideas to the contrary remains unclear. Overall the game is a just an unpolished, buggy pile of crap, that should be labeled "Early Access" at best. Players will constantly die from getting hit by a single enemy and falling into the multitude of pits or traps the game has that kills them instantly, or fall through terrain for no reason, or even just die from absolutely nothing due to one of the plethora of bugs. There are no instructions as to what buttons do anything, which often times vary depending on the context. Some dialogues can be advanced by hitting one of the attack buttons, while others inexplicably only accept the jump button. "Cutscenes" happen out of nowhere, and will completely skip sections of the game when they are activated. Every shop for seems to only sell 2 items, but there's about a dozen different shops instead of just 2 shops selling a dozen items. Level layouts are confusing and downright terrible. Often there are rooms with no visible exits or a random boss in the middle of nowhere. Some doors are locked, but when opened provide absolutely nothing except an extra set of rooms that serve no purpose. Sometimes the only way to progress is to save and then fall down every hole until you find one that doesn't kill you, assuming you don't randomly fall through terrain and die beforehand anyway. Despite all of this, though, combat isn't terrible, and there are a number of characters that can be unlocked. When you're not dying because you got hit once and your character hitstunned backwards 10 feet off a ledge or into spikes, it is still fun to kill a multitude of enemies. That being said, it is still not enjoyable enough to overlook the complete lack of anything else good in the game. I'm not sure if the "Casual" tag is meant to indicate that it is meant to be played casually, or if it is just being developed that way, but all in all I would not recommend picking this game up without a major set of updates and fixes. The story and dialogue are god awful, the music and art are probably infringing on a number of copyrights, and the lack of any coherent direction in the game make this nigh unplayable.

Edit: A year later and the game is still missing basic features, never got promised fixes, and seems to be abandonware. I guess I gave the developer too much credit in trying to fix this game. Avoid purchasing, unless it's on sale for a dollar - even then don't forget about steam refunds. Edit: Steam has a character limit for reviews and comments! I've pasted the current text along with my afterthoughts into a pastebin. You can get the full review here: http://pastebin.com/zV605pj9 Where to begin? Well, lets start by adressing what actually worked for this game: The music in the game is actually really nice, though there are some issues with volume (such as overworld to town stuff or other places suddenly gets much louder) and some repetition in the music. Wish there were some more actual songs in the game, but what's there already is pretty nice. There's an attempt at storytelling, and there's quite a bit of dialog. Unfortunately, this comes coupled with the inability to push a button to advance text and as such you're stuck waiting for the game to show you the next line of text. A button press to make the dialog was desperately needed. Another blemish is the coupling of character details inside of storytelling (Such as when you meet a new character the game tells you how to play them, but doesn't actually let you do it while it's telling you that. Show, don't tell.) The game also does not allow you to try playing the character when you get them, instead you must walk to a waypoint to be able to change characters. Now, let's get to the bad stuff. HOLY CRAP that load time. I don't have the best computer in the world, but it's certainly not a toaster. The game takes on average a minute to load. That's bad, but not too terrible, until you take that into consideration with the staggering amount of game-crashing glitches you can run into, but more on that in a minute. A really, really trivial complaint is the title card for the Dream Within logo, it just looks silly, flashing it's name skewed-screen several times before finally coming to a stop. It's not really a problem but I thought it looked strange. On occasion, the game failed to even display that and chose to just give me a retina-burning white glaring screen. Now, getting into more serious concerns, one of the main selling points is a "Four-Player" cooperative game. While the game does allow you to do this, it feels like cooperative gameplay was an afterthought in the end. The character choices are wide and diverse but unfortunately there are real stinkers in the selection. One such character is Valos. A fast character, capable of dispatching foes with ease and traversing the terrain quickly. Unfortunately getting hit causes a lot of knockback, noticeably more than other characters. The lack of acceleration in the character means you're going from zero to sixty right when you hit the button and whoever's playing that character will be slamming into everything, or flying out into pits. Another character that's not fun to play as is Cenendra. She comes with an invisibility cloak that allows her to avoid getting hit, but unfortunately she is unable to really contribute in any meaningful way during her invisibility. So, using her puts the player at a disadvantage of having an ability that makes you useless to a team contribution when it's in effect. Now, I understand that there are upgrades coming to the characters but for out-of-the-box, these characters are not fun to play and are detrimental to the game's cooperative gameplay experience. In the co-op game I had with my friends they opted to avoiding the noted above characters because of how bad they are in comparison to the others. It would have been nice to be able to play "Thomas Clones" of pallet swaps, allowing everyone to have the basic character. On the subject of character selection, you're stuck playing one character between waypoints, having to go back to a checkpoint to save and check characters (and to change game options too, you cannot just pause and change settings which is really strange.) With so many characters available and them supposedly remaining with you during your travel, it's disappointing that you cannot just pause the game and switch characters ala Little Samson. This would have presented some interesting gameplay mechanics of being able to use certain characters to handle specific situations. A missed opportunity there. One of the core issues with the game though are the game-breaking or game-crashing glitches. On several occasions I and my friends had been thrown back to the desktop with an error message, forcing us to lose our progress (and before you go "You should have saved more often" the crashes happen between waypoints so there's no way you can save between them) and start from square one again. Not fun. Add that into the long load time and everyone's got plenty of time to get a drink or use the bathroom, waiting for the game to turn back on. Some more interesting glitches occur that do not crash the game, but enter into soft locking. I entered into a small building with Reize and Lily standing near a counter of some kind and accidentally paused the game. When I unpaused, everyone had left and I couldn't do anything! I couldn't pause, couldn't unpause or even close the game. Everyone got up and left and I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del to close the game (And yet again, wait through a long load time.) Another crash occured during a dream-sequence with a space-shooting game, crashing back to the desktop. Going onto trivial stuff, the graphics are just... bad. I understand it's supposed to be retro, but when the sprites look like they're ripped and edited from different source material, the backgrounds look like low quality photograph jpegs taken with a cellphone and the character/enemy sprites look like MS Paint they clash heavily with one another and it detracts from the overall appeal. Enemy sprites are lazy, and enemies themselves look like barely recognizable green blobs. The silouhettes for them don't work making fights with actually dangerous enemies (like the bomb throwers) a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because you can't immediately spot them. Larger enemies are hilariously bad, they jiggle and pulsate adding more to that "blob" look, and the big green guys don't even look like they were actually finished (the sprite below the head just goes to darkness/blackness, it looks like he's wearing a body suit.) One of the bosses was a common enemy just stretched to be huge, but it looked like a pixelated mess. Graphics are a minor issue but it hurts the "retro" appeal when the graphics are so inconsistent and boring. All in all, I can see that there's some effort in the game but it seems like there should have been some feedback from outsiders allowed into the game during it's development cycle. A single dev can make a game but playtesting and feedback from a community does nothing but help. It *might* be worth around as much as an apple or android app (roughly two to three dollars) but the fifteen dollar price tag (even with the 33% discount at the time of writing) is simply too high for the quality of this game. Keep an eye on it, avoid buying it until it goes on sale, and even then only if the dev actually makes an attempt to fix some of the major issues with the game. That being said, I do intend to finish the game with Co-op as best we're able, and feedback and whatnot will most likely be provided in the community hub discussion pages for this game. Afterthoughts: Having finished the game I have written in my final thoughts on the game. Steam has a character limit for reviews and replies, but you can read the whole thing here: http://pastebin.com/zV605pj9 tl;dr: Good music Bad game Dont give up, dev. This game is more like an early-access beta. I think that it is not fair to ask 15 euros for a game which is not stable. I bought this game to play it with my girlfriend as local co-op as we usually do on Steam. Our experience was very negative for the first 30 minutes we tried to actually get into game. Too many bugs, here are the few to mention: 1. Loading time is like one minute, just black screen, no information about loading time or whatsoever. 2. Re-mapping the keys is a mess. You set up a player 1 keys properly, then make player 2 keybinds to controller and the controller's buttons remap to the player 1 keys? What is the logic here? 3. Got into game, we tried to play, as expected the player 2's controller controlled both players. 4. Tried to get into settings within game, pressed Esc -> hard quit, game went to desktop, what is this logic? Please test your games properly before releasing as these kind of releases are the reason people download games instead of buying them. To avoid such negative experiences. Loved the idea of game, implementation made me sad. Refund requested.
I've played about half an hour of The Dream King. I want to like this game. It sounds nice. But music alone does not a good game make. It feels so unpolished - like a high school kids hack at a flash game on Newgrounds. If patches ever come out, I might give it another go. Thank God for Steam Refunds.
Keeps crashing. Can't change cotrols. Takes forever to load. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Oh and if you play anyway, don't double KO on the wizard boss or you will have to start over from the beginning : the key that drops will be lost forever and you won't be able to open doors to continue the game... neat huh?
In short: It just has far too many design issues (sound, plot, animation, engine... etc) so no amount of polish could fix it. It needs a rebuild, or to release it as a Github open source project or at least something free in a indie friendlier environment, but no, in no way is this ready for primetime (which is too bad, because it reads like a good solid game pitch). Longer rant : Bro-Force is almost over and I was looking for something. My aim was not as high, but I did read about this starting out as a megaman Fan Game project with 4 players, but the devs decided to switch to pro because they had invested in the project too much. Well ... I understand making a game is not easy and I hope they try again, but this game is not good. My problems are not with the wonky hitboxes or the low quality graphics. It's more of usability issue * There's no tutorial * The intro text is distorted and practically unreadable * The intro animation could have all that back story, but instead you are thrown into it (instead we get to see a seizure warning sign and a completely unrelated Mandelbrot fractal zoom after many minutes waiting for it to load). Problem is, it's really not that good; not because of the writing (though the style seems more like a draft) but because the animations are lacking, yet showcased as if though they had been fully developed. * There are very poorly placed spawn points * Enemies at the begining can already kill you, not in an I wanna be the guy kind of way but more in a this one barely harms you that thing will kill you right off if you touch it. And the only way to tell is by trial and error... * Pressing Escape closes it, instantly. It will take minutes to play, but can be closed instantly while searching for ways to change character... Yeah, fun All in all, this game is lacking in design and had far too many loose ends, which must be why it was abandoned (no updates through 2017 is abandoned to me). The sound is bad, the graphics are bad, the gameplay is dull, the characters are uninspiring (level design has already been discussed by many). And the worst part is I really wanted to like it, in fact I rarely ever make a negative review, and I searched the internet like crazy for the Fangame it spawned from and have played many many amateur proyects (poorly made RomHacks? Heck yeah!). But this one just doesn't gel. It seems like it was partially repurposed, partially patch, parts here, parts there, whole nowhere. I am sorry, I hope to see a more developed project later, I really do. As for this little guy, it just doesn't cut it.
Plays like alot of the Megaman game and it has Local Multiplayer! so far im having fun with this one!
Overall I enjoyed my time with this game, the SNES style graphics, and music takes you on a nostalgia trip back to the glory days of gaming! There are a few technical issues with the game starting with the long load time(takes close to two minutes for me). Toward the end of the game I ran into a few code error messages, but not frequently enough to ruin my experience. The collision is also a bit suspect at times. I could go through a lot of walls that you are not meant to go through, and even suffered a few cheap deaths from falling through the ground. I also had a bit of trouble setting up my controller initially, I had to use JoyToKey to get it to works, since my Sabrent controller was not compatible at all; however that more likely an issue with the engine and not the game itself. These issues aside I really enjoyed the gameplay. There are a ton of secret sprinkled throughout the land, and I had a lot of fun just getting lost and exploring. The combat is also pretty enjoyable too and you are given a nice variety of characters to adventure with! Pros: Nice graphics and music. Many Secrets to Discover. Good Variety of Characters. Cons: Long Load Time. A bit buggy with suspect collision and a few code error pop ups. Setting up controller was a bit of a hassle.
So at a first glance this seemed like a good SNES style game with good pixel graphics. But thats pretty much all thats good about this game honestly. Gameplay is very simplistic just going across linear corridors fighting off the same enemies over and over again with the same attacks over and over. Because you keep moving forward in the same direction this game hardly has any "Metroidvania" elements. The boss battles are fun though, but sometimes can kill you in one hit which gets annoying. And the combat is just 2 attacks depending on what character your playing as it will have different weapons but in the end, they are all the same honestly. The art style does look good with some character models but the backgrounds are very blurry and repeat the same image. The town areas are really wierd cause then the game turns into an over-head view. And it gets confusing where to go for these towns. The music in this game is enjoyable, it fits well with the current settings of the game if your in town or when your fighting enemies. Conclusion: It feels like the developers were trying to add in all the great aspects of a lot of games from the 90s, but lost control on making them good in this game. If this game just focused on being a Castlevania type game I think it would be much better. But for what we have here... pass on this one, its barely average. Rating: 4/10
