Do you ever feel as though the concept of a feeling has been caught up, tangled around images and words, and delivered in a way that allows you to face moments of your past? Emerge pressed against my memories of caring for my grandmother when I was young, but in a beautiful, gentle way. I love puzzle games and at its surface, Emerge is a lovely puzzle adventure. You can rebuild Maya's room, filled with her beautiful things, and everything you unlock makes puzzling all the more pleasant. With every puzzle you complete, you unlock a memory hidden within the main character Maya. And thus Emerge shows its heart. So many memories have been lost, but with your help Maya can find some peace and foundation to who she is. Guided by your faithful cat companion, enjoy the quiet moments of completing a puzzle and then dive deeper into what was and what then came to be. I have had the pleasure of testing this game as it took shape, so I received this copy for free, but will be gifting it to friends I know will enjoy it. I was excited to test as I have enjoyed other games by this developer for some years now.
Emerge is an unusual game. It reveals the story of a woman born to belong in two worlds, a liminal figure, the border between Poland and ... somewhere different. The unique element of this game is the puzzles. There's no fighting, no plate spinning, it's just a simple jigsaw-type puzzle. You do a puzzle and earn points. You are rewarded with another part of the puzzle, and you can spend points to fill out the room she's in and her family photographs. You can also spend points to make the puzzles a touch easier. If you like liminal stories or jigsaw puzzles, you'll love this game.
Beautiful game. I needed to get used to the puzzle mechanics but I really like ist
A game that make us think the vulnerability of life. our life is a collection of memories. Thanks for developing such a meaningful game!
Veldig vakker historie, og mange hint og referanser å finne. Litt å bli vant til, men base konspetet er godt, og fin timewaster
I loved playing this game. The music is so relaxing and the puzzles are fun, even challenging at times especially when there is a timed option to get as many pieces correctly on the board in a row. The more memories you unlock, the more you can decorate the room and find out about Maya. You can take your time over each puzzle and enjoy the story at your own pace. There is a in gaem currency that you can use to unlock items in Maya's room which are gained from playing each puzzle as quickly and accurately as you can. The faster you put in correct pieces, the more bonus currency you get as a streak. I did find that I had to take a few breaks and not play for too long as it strained my eyes, but this is a me issue because of photophobia and working on a computer all day at work. Despite that, it hasn't stopped me playing or enjoying the game. I look forward to seeing more from this developer. Highly recommend this game for those who love chilled, relaxing puzzle games. *I received this copy for free from the developer as part of a beta team giving feedback during development.*
Beta Tester here, I want to speak on where the game shines and where I believe it needs work on. So first of all, I really like seeing how much this game improved since June of 2023, when I first Beta Tested the game. However, I won't be talking about the improvements since then, but rather how I feel about the base game as it was released on May 1st of 2025. The gameplay is simple. You solve jigsaw puzzles that scale in difficulty the more you solve. However, you have power-ups and such to help you out. These allow you to get: The precise location that each piece needs to go, the right orientation or a choice of different locations the piece could go. I believe the third of these is probably the most worthless of the bunch, and wish it was replaced with a different power-up, I'd recommend a "cluster" power-up, where it merges two pieces together that have not been placed onto the board. The pieces themselves are all square. This makes the game harder than a normal jigsaw because pieces aren't overlapping into adjacent slots for better comparison. The game becomes more difficult when you take into account that the image in the jigsaw isn't consistent. Let me explain. So while you are solving the jigsaw, there is an image in the background for you to compare to. You place the pieces you have over the image in the background, and if it's the correct orientation and slot, you can get a point, that can be used in the shop later. However, that puzzle piece changes to a different IMAGE, so you have less of a clue of what you are looking at in comparison. I feel like the game is difficult, when it has no need to be as difficult as it is. Especially as when you get to the later stages or played "Relaxed" mode, where you are dealing with over a hundred pieces at least. I really like the music in this game. I really like listening to the flow music & main menu music. However, one track plays on repeat when you are solving puzzles and it doesn't take long for it to become extremely monotonous. This is the track you will be listening to 90% of the time, and it has honestly made me play on mute a couple of times. But again, the main menu music? It's a banger. 100%. And the flow music? Let me explain how Flow works first. Flow is probably the best feature in this game. When you place 2 pieces on the board in rapid succession, the music changes. And if you place even more, the music starts to add up on itself. It is all the same song, but more and more instruments and beats are added to the mix. if there was ever a feeling of getting into 'the zone', in a video game, this one does it spectacularly. Sadly, there is no "flow" bonus, I hope that is something that is added in the future. Maybe so we get more points in the shop the higher the flow is. But again, the flow system really is too good. It's just gives me a great feeling while playing. I like the artwork of the puzzles themselves as well. They are well made and a treat to look at. No issues here, love the variety, I think they all are neat. The story is another thing I really like. You are drip fed the story. You learn about Maya (the main character), at the very start, and the mindset is really interesting to see. So Maya at first thinks she is 40 years old, but then realizes she is told she is 80 years old. At the very least, she looks older than 40, and it's very cool to see that internal struggle, questioning herself, and then being able to learn more about her through the puzzles, which work more as memories. Each puzzle is supposedly a memory for Maya. I really like this and I am excited to see where this goes. The progression system is something that is really well done as well. So the points I mentioned earlier? They are called shards. For each piece you put onto a board, you get a shard. In the shop, you can get pieces of furniture that fills the room, that allows you to get more shards when you put a piece down on the board. There are also other bonuses as well. Such as having a longer "Flow" time (meaning you can get to higher combos), or the cooldowns on power-ups are reduced. I hope there is one that allows you to stack the amount of power-ups you can use. Currently. While you are playing story mode, if you open up the next puzzle, you cannot access the shop until that puzzle is complete. It is a minor issue, but I hope the shop can be accessed from all times in the future. I would love to be able to recommend this game. However, that is not something I can do while there is one glaring weakness at the moment. The achievements. None of them are working, despite me having met the requirements for a few of them already. As an abid achievement hunter, this is what is holding me back from giving this the "Recommended" tag. It's a fun game that I enjoy playing in short bursts (like I am with any other puzzle game), but I hate how my progression feels stagnated while the achievements aren't working. If this is to change, I will change the current review from "Not Recommended" to "Recommended". If this is not something you care about, you will probably like this game. EDIT: 12/05/2025 Achievements have been removed, which was my main issue. Now changed to "Recommended"
EMERGE is a quiet, introspective indie experience that uses simple mechanics to explore complex emotional themes. Rather than positioning itself as a traditional puzzle game focused on challenge and progression, it frames its gameplay around memory, identity, and the gradual reconstruction of a life that is slipping away. The story follows Maya, an elderly woman navigating fragments of her past, and from the very beginning, the game establishes a tone that is reflective and personal rather than competitive or fast-paced. The central gameplay revolves around assembling puzzle-like fragments, but it reinterprets this familiar concept in a more fluid and symbolic way. Instead of rigidly fitting pieces together, players interact with shifting, layered visuals that slowly form coherent images tied to Maya’s memories. This approach transforms the act of solving puzzles into something more meaningful, where each completed scene represents a recovered moment rather than just a completed task. The mechanics are easy to understand and require little instruction, allowing players to focus on the emotional context rather than on mastering complex systems. As the experience unfolds, the environment begins to change in subtle but significant ways. The initially sparse surroundings gradually fill with objects and details that reflect the memories being restored. This visual progression reinforces the idea of rebuilding a sense of self, giving weight to each puzzle that is completed. It creates a connection between gameplay and narrative, where progress is not just measured in objectives but in the gradual reassembly of a life story. This design choice adds a layer of cohesion that helps the game stand out despite its simplicity. The narrative is delivered in a restrained and understated manner, allowing players to interpret much of the story through visual cues and atmosphere. It touches on themes such as relationships, loss, and the fading nature of memory, drawing from real emotional experiences to create a sense of authenticity. The pacing supports this approach, moving slowly and deliberately to give players time to absorb each moment. There is no pressure to rush, and the absence of time constraints allows the experience to unfold naturally, encouraging reflection rather than urgency. Visually, the game adopts a soft and stylized presentation that complements its tone. The use of color and lighting helps create a dreamlike quality, blurring the line between memory and imagination. While the visuals are not highly detailed, they are effective in conveying mood and supporting the narrative. The audio design further enhances this atmosphere, with gentle music and ambient sounds that create a calm and immersive environment. Together, these elements work to establish a cohesive experience that feels both intimate and contemplative. One of the game’s limitations lies in its lack of mechanical depth. The puzzle system does not evolve significantly over time, and players looking for increasing complexity or challenge may find the gameplay too straightforward. However, this simplicity is also part of its design philosophy, as it allows the narrative and emotional themes to take center stage. The experience is not meant to test skill in the traditional sense, but to provide a space for reflection and engagement with its story. Ultimately, EMERGE succeeds as a thoughtful and emotionally driven project that uses interactive elements to explore themes that are rarely addressed in conventional games. It offers a short but meaningful journey that prioritizes atmosphere and storytelling over complexity and challenge. While it may not appeal to those seeking a more demanding or mechanically rich experience, it stands out as a sincere and carefully crafted work that leaves a lasting impression through its quiet approach.
