1 hit-death metroidvania games should not exist, especially ones that rely on pin-point accurate angles on dashes though gauntlets that will kill you if you dont have the right angle Also having to dash to 'Reload" my shots is definitely a choice, not a good one, but a choice. I cannot recommend this game, even though it is well priced.
Despite purporting to support Steam Deck , this game does NOT run on Steam Deck, nor Arch Linux on desktop. I hate when developers lie! It still says steam deck support on their patch notes and does nto even run in a compatibility layer.
Elypse is a very challenging precise platformer. For me personally this is a 5/10. I won't play it again, but the challenge was fun. If you like pain go for it, especially if it is on sale. Hence the "recommendation" Pro: - Nice visuals in an atmospheric world - Fast paced gameplay, due to chained dashes. - Good soundtrack - Great cost to playtime ratio - especially if it is on sale. - Difficult, but fun final boss. Neutral: -
Dashes reload shots.
Interesting concept, but probably not for everyone. - Challenging boss fights, but not very memorable (except for final boss). - Interesting but not very deep story. - The FOV could be larger. Especially when you have to go downwards, you don't see much. - As stated under positive - the world is atmospheric with nice visuals. However, the areas don't really invite for exploration. Con: - A precision platformer that uses the hard-to-precisely-aim joystick to set the dash target. Which again is at fixed distance.
(Activate the dash line marker in the settings.)
- Screenshakes when shooting and dashing, which makes the precision part quite hard. Especially avoiding fast projectiles. - Sometimes very rare save points.
(If you need to collect several keys for a gate, visit a save point in between keys.)
- Shots push your character quite a distance backwards. Most of my deaths were caused by this. - One hit = death, is very punishing, especially due to ... - ... almost every enemy has autoaim. - Upgrades don't feel rewarding. Especially after boss fights.
Cool little precision platformer. If you're a fan of Aeterna Noctis, I'm sure you'll like it. If you're someone who enjoyed the precision platforming aspect of Aeterna Noctis but not the backtracking/Metroidvania parts (i.e. me), then it especially might be up your alley. It's challenging, fun, linear (in a good way), and doesn't overstay its welcome.
.
I'm a huge precision platforming fan and love cel shading animations, so I expected to love this game. In the end I did, but it did take some time to grow on me. It took a bit of time to unlearn a lot of muscle memory I had built up from other games. Your character accelerates to maximum height extremely quickly, then falls just as quick. If you're used to maneuvering your character mid-jump, that's not going to work. And the dash works when you release the button, not when you press it down, so it's very easy to switch analog directions slightly before you release, causing you to dash in the wrong direction. While those sound like complaints, you just have to get used to repeated air-dashing being how you maneuver. You hold the button, press the direction, then release, and as long as you're consistent with it, you have great maneuverability.
