This game is a mixed bag for me. I downloaded the demo and played for over an hour, and picked up this game on launch day. On the one hand, the gamefeel is wonderful. The developers really nailed character movement, and adding a parry sets this aside from its peers (20XX/30XX comes to mind). Character designs are cool. Most weapons feel really good. As an old Smash Bros. fan I love the Break the Targets bonus round that I run into from time to time. But this game feels like an early access game. I bought this game on launch and there's occasional camera issues when transitioning into Break the Targets, the tutorial only comes in small chunks after runs/deaths, charging effects never go away which makes Elsie look like a black hole...on one occasion I even defeated a boss and the game just softlocked, necessitating me to use hazards to die and start a new run. This has everything it needs to be a great game, and because of that I still recommend it. However, it really needed more testing and polish before its full launch. Right now it still feels like an Early Access game.
The game currently feels like it's almost ready for early access. I've played friends' alpha builds of games that have more complete UI and menus, and more responsive text boxes than this game. It's just not ready. It's pretty fun. The primary challenge in the first 2 hours is training your eyes to recognize enemy attacks and indicators through the constant visual noise. Once you get used to that, the tuning at the start of the game is just way off. High damage, multiple dashes, and a very forgiving parry system make it feel like you're flying through the initial levels without stopping. Bosses so far vary; the design doesn't seem very intentional. Some feel like they forgot to give the boss a full move set, some feel like they couldn't figure out how to produce a challenging pattern, so they just added extra layers of attacks over it. Which isn't necessarily bad, 30XX takes the more traditional approach and some of its bosses become a real slog once "solved", but at least they're fun to fight. Essentially, I think it's impossible to balance a satisfying boss around the amount of power you have in this game. I feel like I can be anywhere on the screen whenever I want, and if I DO send myself into an attack, I can just tap parry. Promotional material shows a lot of bosses I haven't come across, and a lot left to encounter in the game -- and look, it really is this simple: not taking the time to get the menus and UI working correctly, to me, sends a strong signal that this game just is what it is, and it's not going to start getting better after the two hour mark. I could be wrong, but there are a million other action platformers out there waiting for their turn.
Looking for anime-based games? Check out our Steam curator!
Polished rogue-like 2D-action platformer with roguelite elements including every time randomized generated stages. Beautiful pixelart, speedy and smooth gameplay. If you like 20XX/30XX, it could be your fav.
I tried the demo for Elsie back at PAX East 2019 and was quite impressed which earned it an instant wish list. I tried it again at additional PAX Easts and this just built my hype as I eagerly awaited the full release. Perhaps I hyped it up for myself too much but this is not the game I expected to be playing. The Good: Mega Man X nostalgia in full effect Controls feel great Power-ups during a run give you a sense of Elsie becoming stronger Artwork is fantastic The Bad: Is there a clear path in the story or is that completely random too? Where are the bosses? (this should not be this randomized) There seems to be a ton of content (based on achievements not earned) but progressing towards that is a mystery The tutorial (the fact that this needs an explanation as to why it is bizarre/terrible is something in itself) The upgrade system has issues - you can seemingly upgrade items you do not have in a given run; I get that you may get said item but is there not a way to not have that appear or am I expected to take the upgrade because I might gain access I suggest buying on a sale and then giving positive feedback because this developer can do exciting teams based on some very good/great ideas in Elsie. Unfortunately, this seems like it was put together, a game of 52 card pickup was poorly played, and this was the end result. Full review can be found at https://www.deargamers.net/reviews/elsie
I was eagerly anticipating this game and spent hours with the demo when it first dropped, which made me even more excited for the full release. However, the final version hasn’t quite lived up to my expectations. While the demo was incredibly engaging, some of the power-ups in the full game feel underwhelming and don’t enhance the gameplay as much as I hoped. The replayability is present, but it falls short of the excitement I initially experienced. The game does have its share of issues, but there’s definitely room for improvement. Despite the current issues I have with the game, it still shows a lot of promise. I’m hopeful that future updates will address these flaws and enhance the overall experience. For now, though, I still think Elsie has a lot of charm and is 100% worth picking up!
This version feels like Early Access. I don't feel comfortable purchasing an unpolished game knowing it could remain so indefinitely. I refunded my purchase because I experienced problems getting the game to launch on Steam Deck and bugs on the first level. I'm happy to buy this game once it's functionally polished and complete. For now, buy knowing it's a beautiful work-in-progress with great potential.
This game really scratches the mega man itch. Movement feels good, many of the upgrades feel impactful, and the aesthetics of the levels are great. The game has a few bugs that have just ruined runs for me - you beat a boss and the death sequence doesn't trigger, leaving you there looking at a frozen boss until you decide to quit out. Opening an upgrade or level up screen, alt+tabbing to another program, and coming back has left me with the upgrade screen forever overlaid onto the game until I restart. Sometimes boss health bars don't show up on a run anymore, have to restart to fix. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if you could save a run where you are and pick it up, but closing the game ends your run. There are minor issues too: - Weird tutorial pacing - you get the next little bit of the tutorial at the start of each run, so you end up encountering most mechanics before ever encountering them - finding upgrades that can't benefit you - elemental upgrades that require elemental bullets aren't locked behind having elemental bullets, leading to many dead upgrades - unlocking items at the wharf - you gain items when you unlock them, so you have them on the next run. This makes you want to save up all your unlocks to have one mega run. This could be mitigated if you could just buy an upgrade with arclight coins at the start of a run (the same as the unlock cost), or by not giving you the item the first time - story + dialogue - the dialogue and voice acting are uninspired. This type of game isn't really known for its story, but the characters are just very tropey. I enjoy the game, but I know these issues would be show stoppers for other people.
Enjoyed my time with it. Plan on playing it more in the future. Game has a very mega man feel with great music to match its feel. Loving the upgrade mechanics and the boss fights.
As someone who has no experience in this type of games, it's very fun and challenging. I think that no matter how you feel about the game afterwards, a good time is guaranteed. Of course, the game is much better with a controller than with a keyboard, since the experience feels like is clearly not designed for the latter.
