Elemental Exiles is a roguelike deckbuilder.
Fights
The gameplay during fights is basically like most other roguelikes. You play cards with energy. What's different compared to many other roguelikes is that there are three elements - Fire, Water, and Nature. Cards are either non-elemental or elemental. This goes for shields and attacks as well which means: If you deal 10 fire damage and the enemy has a water shield, you will only do 50% damage. If you deal 10 fire damage and the enemy has a nature shield, you will deal 200% of the damage to the shield. Attacks that immediately deal damage to the HP don't differ. Also, every card has a counter. If the counter reaches zero, the card will be destroyed for your run. This is quite interesting as most deckbuilders allow you to build a deck and if you're satisfied at some point, you will just stick to it. This is not possible in Elemental Exiles which can be quite demanding.
World Map
There is also a world map. The map is the same for every character (there are 12 in total). This means that if you explore some parts during a run, the map will stay explored even when playing a new run. The nodes also don't change. So, the bosses are always in the same place, as well as every other encounter, event, or shop. Tho you have to beat every encounter once again when starting over.
Difficulty & Healing
The game is quite difficult compared to other roguelikes IMO. I've played quite a lot of them and beat most of them early on. I've played on "normal" difficulty and still needed several runs and around 8hours to finally beat the game with ONE character. Why? Because as you progress through your quests, encounters get harder and stronger, you lose cards when played too often, money can be tight, there are buffs and debuffs that stay for several encounters, and most importantly: Healing is quite rare. There are three ways to heal. 1. Some events let you heal some HP but this is quite rare and even if, it's not by much you even have to take a debuff for that. 2. There is a regeneration potion. It's rare and doesn't heal that much. 3. At a shop. The first heal costs 100$, the second one 150$, etc. You also need quite some time to discover these different shops and even if you have at some point, you need to fight your way through the map again.
Pros and Cons
+ It's strategically demanding + It brings new and interesting mechanics to the table like elements and the world map + many different characters, each with a different perk + It's hard. Many roguelike deckbuilders are too easy or want you to complete the game to unlock a new difficulty level which just adds "Enemies have 10% more HP", "You get 2 curses", etc. Elemental Exiles goes a different and refreshing route + It looks quite good and I've had no problems on my desktop as well as on my laptop performance-wise - the tutorial didn't even tell me how to heal. I needed some time to discover shops and this way of healing. - Though there is a meta progression (unlocking new heroes) I would like to have even more to make it even more appealing to play through the game several times
Conclusion
Elemental Exiles is a highly addictive and demanding roguelike-deckbuilder. It brings new and interesting mechanics to the table. It also handles proven ways of how you play deckbuilders differently. The difficulty rises as you progress but never feels unfair or impossible. It's quite refreshing playing this one after dozens of other deckbuilders. You should definitely get it if you're into deckbuilders! I wrote my review just before it went live and I did not know about the price. I do think the price of 25€ is a bit too high even considering how good the game is. I'd recommend to get it for 20€ or less.
Card game that takes inspiration from Slay the Spire.
Pros:
- 12 Characters to try and are unlocked after reaching certain parts of map and beating the character or meeting a certain requirement like killing 20 specific enemies. - Keyboard shortcuts to save time.
Cons:
- Sound effects are basic. - Same price as Slay the Spire, but lacks balance and is complete RNG to get a strong deck. - Deck synergy is too luck based. Your starting deck will change based on the elemental enemies beaten and class identity becomes irrelevant based on random cards added to deck. - Too many fights needed to reach final boss. Takes 1 hour or longer to beat 3 bosses, 1 final boss, and you are required to go through at least 15 fights. - Easy Difficulty was not "easy". I reached final boss on 2 different runs, but loss to higher health and debuffs during the fight. Boss has over 250 health and you only have 70-80. - Blessings similar to relics from Slay the Spire, but they are not permanent. They usually last only 4 battles and this defeats the purpose of having or buying them. - Debuffs are permanently added to deck. To remove them, you need to spend 50 gold or play the debuff card to take damage. Also, you need to constantly block to prevent enemies from adding debuff cards to deck. - Progression is limited. Beating certain amount of enemies does not unlock stronger cards or bonuses. Conclusion: Takes too long to beat a run and not enough card variety/combos to be exciting. Restarting a run without upgraded cards or bonuses is frustrating. Follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.
This is not the game you're looking for. The fact that the game didn't recieve any single update should tell you about the state of this game. It's bad, it's bland, it's badly balanced. From uninspired mechanics, to a dev that thinks his game is perfect, this game has nothing going for it. It's overpriced, and brings nothing of value. This game was absolutely not playtested, feedback given to the dev was just wasted time. I had cases that show clearly that the dev had not spent a single second thinking about his game mechanics. Edit : Two years, this point still stands. It was a dead game on release. Not a single patch. Half of the reviews exists because the dev just offered his game to anyone willing to play it, and you only have 15 reviews. My feedback topick from a year ago is still on the frontpage of the forum : that's not hard, game has like 5 topics total. Edit : Have you noticed how I'm the single review above 15 hours ? And how there's only one other review above 10 ? In two years ? Seriously, you'd better spend your money on a Slay The Spire clone. Go buy monster train 2 or banners of ruin of whatever you fancy, even knock on the coffin lid, a game that I though was terribly balanced had at least updates and they tried to fix stuff and bring variety to their game. This, is a dead game. Edit : Just go buy Slay the Spire 2. This is not the game you're looking for.
A Card Game KING review
The game introduces a number of twists to the standard rogulike deckbuilder formula, and while some of them add to the fun, a lot detract from it. On the positive side, I really enjoyed the interrupt mechanic, which allows you to completely stop some powerful enemy attacks by hitting them enough times. This adds a fun tactical layer to the game and prevents turns where you draw all attack cards, when you really need to defend, to feel bad. Additionally, the game features a variety of heroes, each with a unique passive ability that influences how you play. Despite the positives the game feels it's trying to limit your fun. There are a number of new mechanics that make you weaker over the course of the game, not stronger. Beyond the challenge of maintaining your health, the numerous battles with meager rewards, and scaling enemies, the passive bonuses (similar to relics in Slay the Spire) only last for a few fights, making it impossible to build around them. All cards also have limited uses, so you may lose your best cards simply by using them. This makes it even harder to create a strong deck, and it’s not the only obstacle to deckbuilding. Building a decent deck is quite challenging. While there is some synergy between cards, it’s often minimal, and the cards you are offered don’t always align with your strategy. The game features an interesting light/dark mechanic that empowers certain cards, but it’s difficult to focus on one over the other when you need to take any good card you can get. Overall, while the game has cool ideas, certain game design choices sap the joy out of deckbuilding by taking away cards/bonuses and making it tough to make any deck work. It certainly doesn't make it a bad game, but it may not appeal to everyone.
The positive
+ Interrupting enemies via attack is an awesome mechanic, and love to see more of it. Drawing a card full of attacks on a powerful enemy attack turn feels far less painful than in most other games. + Light/Dark mechanic allows a nice set up for bonus effects when handled correctly. + Plenty of heroes with unique passives to choose from
The neutral
* Elemental damage (only deals extra/less damage to shields of the weaker/stronger element). It's a double edged source where it feels immensely rewarding to destroy a shield of the weaker element, but also feels extra bad when it happens to you because you didn't draw a block of the right element.
The negative
- Cards have limited uses which makes it difficult to make a good deck. - Most rewards are temporary or one use only - Too many fights and boss fights don't feel rewarding. - Altogether the above makes it very difficult to grow in strength and enjoy a strong deck
Conclusion:
While the game has some cool mechanics, it makes it difficult to create and maintain a powerful and fun deck. Careful recommendation. **Great visual style, unique card expiring upon use gimmick, elemental blocks/attacks/strength/weakness, dark and light alignments, and huge array of characters to play as. I thought I found a gem here.** Can't recommend now though.. The game doesn't utilize these to it's full potential. Here's the bad. -12 characters! Well.. not really. They all share the same card pool. All of them. The only difference is they have a unique buff, but the buff isn't game changing really. It's just like +1 water defense to water cards, or 2X gold on combat wins. -Light and Dark alignments! Sadly this doesn't effect events, nor are the alignments permanent. You can't go down a dark path or one of good and have altered events on the game map or requirements for special items/cards based on alignment. Nothing cool like that, it's literally just an extra effect that's only in battles upon card use; it changes how strong/weak a card or enemy is. It goes down every turn like a buff/debuff. -Elemental cards and plain cards. I did like this gimmick but it's half baked. For example, if you have a fire shield of 10, and get attacked by a normal attack of 5, you have 5 shield left. If you get attacked by water with 5 it has a 200% buff and breaks the shield. If you attack fire with nature it'll do half damage. Sadly, that's about it. There are card synergies as well but with so few cards it gets old fast. -Narrative. It has a cool narrative for each characters motivation and why they traverse the map. You can even fight the other 12 characters on the map! As cool as this is, it's not that deep. Every enemy fights you for a reason if you read the encounter, but you ALWAYS have to fight. There is no dark/light alignment, factions, race, or RPG stats that enable you a chance to alter the battle encounter. -No relics or perm progression. The game is just, beat the bosses with each character. That's it. No meta game or unlockable aside from the characters. You can't have a unique run with relics or stats, it's always the same. Including the map. You'll find the best route and then rinse and repeat. Not enough RNG imo. 6/10 game right now.. potential could Rival STS as a unique deckbuilder if the dev expands upon this amazing skeleton of a game.
Had this on my wishlist for a while as I'm a big STS fan. Only a couple of hours in so far but i love the variety and attention to detail that has gone into all of the encounters. Definitely going to be playing more over the coming days and first impressions are great! Already want to find all of the additional characters and complete all of the quest lines... my addictive personality strikes again. Very charming game, tough but addictive, the way any good roguelike should be.
What a waste. Beautiful, slick UI and graphics. Great metagame framing. But the game itself is incredibly boring. You have three elements, and attack or block with those. Watch numbers go up and down. There doesn't seem to be much else here.
