Genuinely the worst game I have ever played. The 36% of people that gave a positive review have to be trolling. A broken, unfinished mess
This is a third person action/adventure/RPG kind of game where you control some guy in some steampunk fantasy land solving a big quest, or something. I skipped most of the storyline because it seems like it's half an hour to get into the game (the developer forces you to go through the whole set of credits before starting, which should be a red flag). The game itself is very badly polished for a 2016 game, although apparently it was in development hell for years. The game is a console port that apparently didn't meet the console release, and is also apparently incomplete. I didn't get far enough to find out, because the camera controls are completely terrible, some of the worst I have ever seen. The fixed camera angles alone are enough to avoid this game. The graphics are high poly and high quality textures (good) but there's a filter you can't remove, and terrible lack of shadows making the game look like DooM with the gamma turned up in every room (very bad). Can't recommend, $15 is way too much for a game abandoned by developers after a "MVP" dump and run.
Edge of Twilight is an Episode 1, proof-of-concept demo of a game that aim(ed) to tell a large, epic story. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT, PURCHASE THE DLC "COLLECTOR'S EDITION". It is a waste of money, as the studio appears largely defunct, and the promised story continuation is unlikely to ever appear. That being, said, this review will focus on Episode 1. Because despite the global situation around the game and the studio, I quite liked what's here. The world of Hellayem has been split into Day and Night by a magical cataclysm. creatures of Night called tainted are seeping into Day, and the world is running out of Ether, the magical energy source that makes the local analogues of steam engines run. You play as Lex, an outcast/mercenary with Tainted blood, who can turn into a tainnted, but remains sentient and can survive Night. The gameplay revolves around traversing the world either in Day form, doing hack and slash combat, or (at certain portals) going into night, where time stands still, and Lex is able to run, jump and clamber. Closest comparison would be Raziel from the Legacy of Kain games going into The Spectral Realm. Combat also works different in Night, as you sap the Ether from your enemies until they freeze, at which point you rend them apart. It can be a bit clunky, but it looks quite cool when it works. And speaking of looks: the game's artists have some real talent. The capital city of Athyr is some of the best video game steampunk city depiction out there. There isn't a whole lot to do and the cinematic overhead camera (think original God of War games- or, again, Legacy of Kain) can be awkward at times. But the views are worth it. The combat is functional, but un-inspired. There's only a few enemy types, and they respawn too frequently imho. There's some lever puzzles that involve you shifting back and forth between Day and Night (due to the whole "time stands still in Night" aspect, but nothing too complex. And yet, I quite liked the concept. I don't honestly believe anything will ever come of the rest of the project, but if you see it on sale, and you want to have a taste of what could have been something neat, I do feel it's worth a shot for a few hours. Mick Gordon, the composer of Doom and Command & Conquer did the soundtrack, and its quite good, and the sights, and ideas in what's here are not bad. And who knows, maybe, someday this project will live again. Weirder things have happened.
I do not like this game at all. The camera isn't controlled by the mouse, apparently you need three arms to play this game. Combat is not enjoyable whatsoever, its just button mashing.
While this game has some interesting lore, ideas, and gameplay mechanics, it is an unfinished and buggy piece. I am fairly confident that when I originally got this game several years ago, there wasn't a disclaimer stating that it was "only the first chapter" of the game. As everyone else has stated in their review, there are numerous bugs within that made this largely unplayable. I was keen to see this game be fully realized, but, alas, that never came to be, which is a shame. I do not recommend getting this game, not even discounted. I also would highly discourage anyone from purchasing the Collector's Edition because, as everyone has stated, this is a forgotten game. IF you still think the premise of the story is intriguing after reading the About blurb, then I highly recommend looking for a playthrough video on YouTube. Who knows? Maybe someone may have commentary about the history of this game and what happened to it.
This appears to be an unfinished and just generally bad game. Also the base version is only chapter one which though stated in the description is still a touch deceptive. Doesn't matter to me as I didn't even get that far due to disappointment with gameplay. It's a shame because the setting and story seemed really cool but the moment I started actually playing I knew I didn't want to continue. No music real map or guidance in town can't interact with NPCs, controller usage doesn't change onscreen keyboard prompts, wonky camera ... Just nope. I looked into it and apparently this game went through like 11 years of development hell. For a while the developer seemed really great at interacting with users but disappeared completely about 3 years ago.... Disappointed. Dev if you see this please remake this game in a modern engine or perhaps release it as other another form of media. Book/comic/etc.
This is not a game, but one solid bug.
