Duskpunk

Solid dice RPG with multiple endings and interesting characters.

Duskpunk is a faithful clone of the dice-driven narrative RPG Citizen Sleeper. It treads the same themes of individual oppression, anti-capitalism and body horror. If you liked those themes in Citizen Sleeper, you will probably like them here. The core gameplay consists of spending eight time slots of actions, whose success is decided by the roll of two D6s, then resting. With every rest moving you a point or two closer to breaking down. This is a slight downgrade on Citizen Sleeper's system where you rolled up to five dice each day, then chose where to spend them, knowing in advance which actions would succeed or fail. By moving the randomisation to the other side of the player's decisions a significant chunk of agency is removed. When you roll badly, you do badly. Most important in a narrative game is the story. Most of the characters are very two-dimensional. They exist to represent evil capitalists or noble workers, with little in between. There are no small acts of human kindness that are not in service of the railroaded political agenda. Either you favour murder, or you favour a glorious socialist revolution. Ultimately this feels uncomfortably heavy-handed.

Short, emotional, and mechanically fairly simple (so long as you don't annoy the Dice Gods). A perfect narrative RPG for those who don't have a lot of free time, and with an inspiring tale that's well worth engaging with on a deeper level. Excellent work. Long live the Sarum People's Republic!

Good game, of a similar type of gameplay as Citizen Sleeper. It is my opinion that Citizen Sleeper, both parts, are better games, but it's a matter of taste; certainly worth trying the game. Surprisingly, workers' assembly ending turned out all too easy to slip into; I consider myself to be somewhat left-wing (even by European standards), but that ending was ideologically unsatisfying for me, and I found no way, in my single playthrough, to evade it, despite my attempts. There is "Capitalist republic" achievement, but I couldn't find the way to get it. Oh, well. Most people won't notice/won't be bothered; for me, it was just playing too close to history I've lived through.

A game heavily influenced by Citizen Sleeper and the table role-playing game Blades in the Dark (which is indeed where the key mechanics of Citizen Sleeper are from in the first instance. I didn't find it quite as gripping as Citizen Sleeper, but that's one of the best things I've played in the last few years, so that's not really much of a critique. The story is more linear and the writing and the characters didn't quite come alive for me like in Sleeper, but it is still a very worthwile jaunt through an interesting setting.

Great amalgement of choose your own adventure, Blades in the dark and great atmosphere.
