Dungeons of Hinterberg was a really enjoyable game. It's a good mix of story, puzzle, and combat. I really enjoyed Luisa's story and the way she explores Hinterberg is comforting and made me reflect on myself a bit too. Great game for all skill levels, would definitely encourage giving it a playthrough.
Pretty neat little indie game! Great visuals; I love the general aesthetic they went for. The overall gameplay loop is kind of persona-esque, with you spending the daytime exploring and in dungeons, then going to hang out with people for progressive benefits in the afternoon (I actually liked it a little better here; since the people exist in the same central town it doesn't feel as "scheduling my socializing to optimize my build" as in Persona, so much as just naturally running into people and hanging out with whoever you want). The puzzles are unlikely to stump you for long, and the combat isn't terribly hard unless you start deliberately going into dungeons/fights you aren't leveled for (past a point even those can get too easy unless you start actively nerfing yourself), but solid on the whole, and doesn't overstay its welcome. A good game to play slowly; boot up for maybe just an hour or two to get a couple dungeons in, then put down until tomorrow.
Dungeons of Hinterberg is a cozy dungeon crawling game with social elements and, in my experience, a much more modern setting than most games that deal with dungeons. The characters that inhabit Hinterberg were a joy to talk to and interact with. I kind of focused on a small handful while I was playing because there are just so many of them but from the small bits of conversation I had with most of them I could see myself enjoying almost all of them. They also added a social system where hanging out with and giving gifts to people will get you increased stats and new items so depending on what you are going for different characters can really come in handy if you are just looking for that sort of thing. Art and setting were amazing with even the town itself being just a nice little lakeside town that looked great. Each of the four areas of the game felt unique and looked amazing in their own right. From the more lush forested zone to an open swampy area that was just nice to kayak around in. All of them came with their own type of magic and dungeons as well which really made me excited to see what was coming in each of them. Combat was very simple with some nice variety and a surprisingly large amount of customization. You are stuck to using a sword but all of the Attack Conduits and chaining together basic and heavy attacks along with each zone's unique magic really made it feel nice. The equipment also had a nice steady growth that was often tied directly to the social aspects of the game. There is even an enchantment system that you can unlock but I never went deep enough into the friendship with the character that can do it for you to unlock it. I would be remiss to leave out the puzzles in this review because honestly they were a highlight. None of them felt too difficult and in some cases felt a little too easy but they were a good time. They really brought the dungeons together and made for nice breathers between fights as well. The only issues I had with them were on the movement side of things. Sometimes the mantling and jumping mechanics could get a bit weird and have you jump around when you didn't want to but it was never so bad that it took me out of the game. Overall, Dungeons of Hinterberg is a great game with awesome characters, amazing art and just good dungeons that are inhabited with nice puzzles and fun combat. I recommend this game for sure and think that fans of any dungeon crawl games or even more cozy games would enjoy this one.
Overall I really enjoyed the experience this game provided. Pros: * Great art style. * Souls-like combat without the needless difficulty. * Just enough player choice to keep player progression and combat interesting. * Good pacing with both the story and introducing new gameplay mechanics. * The game ran well on my machine at max settings. Cons: * There's a few mechanics later in the game that aren't introduced in an obvious way like the rest but are required to progress. These same mechanics are then only used once or twice in the entire game. * Most of the puzzles are too simple and some are are a bit fiddly. You will know what to do but if you make a slight mistake you have to waste loads of time getting back to the same point. I played the game with the sound very low so I can't really comment on the sound + music.
This game is such a pleasant surprise. No nonsense, just a good game. If you like Zelda BotW, you will like this. I got it on sale, but it would have been worth full price
Such a nice god feel game right here. Especially if you're just trying to relax after a hard day at work. Not too challenging either where it leads to questioning your sanity. Just the right amount of fun and versatility in this game. Especially if you take a long break from the game its no harm done. You can play it at your own pace with no consequences. The story does take a while to pick, but it is an overall entertaining one. My only con on this game would be the combat. It does feel underwhelming especially with some of your AC attacks to doing great damage to merely a scratch to the enemy, puzzles are nothing too crazy, and the automatic jumping system could lead to some unattended deaths that could lead to some giggles. For sure if y'all enjoy a casual stroll through the park this is your game. You can not go wrong with this game it is just pure fun and love!
Excellent visuals, a more intriguing story than I expected, good characters, and fun combat. The puzzles are also really well done, and the dungeons don't overstay their welcome, which makes the pacing for the whole game extremely solid. The addition of the Persona-esque relationship mechanic tying in to your progression is also really well done. I thought I would fall off after an hour or two, but found myself wanting to keep playing and finish the game over about a week. One of the better indie games I've played in the last few years.
