Fun, but has a steep learning curve. The game is a macro-level strategy game, much more focused on managing your resources and scouting than micro-managing real time unit combat. I watched a lot of Youtube gameplay videos before buying or playing, and I'm glad I did. The game has a steep learning curve and is not intuitive. I love it, but if I had played without learning from experienced players it would have been frustrating - even on the lowest difficulty. The game has five ways to win. When you're starting out, I suggest disabling some of the victory conditions. Nothing like thinking you're about to win your first Dune: Spice Wars game ever by hegemony only to lose because someone else managed to hold Governor of Arrakis for thirty days. Or assassinated you.
Interesting slow paced strategy game with 4X elements and multiple victory conditions that are appreciated as a primarily economic player. Technically works on the Steam Deck but text is too small.
Good 4x strategy game so far, but even though I knew what I was getting into I was still hoping it would be more of a straight up RTS like Dune II and Dune 2000 - both of which I used to watch my dad play as a kid and looked really fun. Spice Wars is most certainly worth the 13 bucks on sale atm, but if you're looking for gameplay like the ones from the 90s, this isn't it.
I would say it's as of now the best 4X strategy title you could find. It's split between equally managing your military force, your economic power, diplomacy, a democratic voting system that affects all players on the map equally, and espionage. All of these are equally advanced and each one of them can turn the game in your favor, or in the enemy's. Feels extremely complex but also very fun and intuitive. One of the best strategy games you could find. Also, as a big big bonus, if you're a fan of the books, you will be thrilled to find out that it perfectly encapsulates the vibe and atmosphere of the universe.
It got boring real quick. Game is extremly repetitive.
This game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ droped by developers.
What an absolutely fantastic game. The various aspects of play (political, military, economic, etc) are all done so well that it makes for a game with basically endless replayability. And each faction feels so wonderfully unique and true to the lore. Easily one of the best 4x games.
The game is very good, fun to play and every faction is very different in how to win and where and where you shine the most. However, the game is absolutely awful with the tutorials. It explains you 5% of the entire game, just barely enough to not make you a sitting potato in the map, but lacks everything else. What factions are good at what, when certain units unlock (Heroes do not require a buiilding), how to play in your terms, how to defend effectively, etc. It's god awful, and the only "remedy" is giving you tooltips once you play a singleplayer game and something new that wasn't in the tutorial appears. Which, again, gives zero context and have you wondering if it's useful for your chosen faction or not. I reccomend Daevohk on YouTube. He has by far the most comprehensive guides for each faction (Some were nerfed or work differently now, but 90% of what he says still applies) and still does content for this game (Which is amazing, seeing as this is a Shiro Game, made to be churned out and forgotten). But, again, this is a fantastic game that you can enjoy, and respects as much as possible (remember that in games, you can't be 100% faithful or you'll end up with like 3 factions at most) the lore of Dune, and even surprises you with small but interesting details. Totally recommended on a sale.
The more I play this game, the more I like it. The art style is fun, the universe is immersive, and the gameplay is varied and each faction feels different. Just when I think I'm getting the hang of things, the game throws a curveball at me. There are also several different ways to win. I have to be on my toes, hoping that another faction doesn't stab me in the back. On the other hand, betraying your ally is so very satisfying. Why yes I do prefer Harkonnens, why do you ask? As far as performance goes, I can run it on medium high graphics and 40-50 fps. On another computer it can start lagging with more than 3 factions running around and fighting at the same time.
