It's rare to have a VN protag who likes a heroine from the start, especially if she rejects his confession, so that already makes this game stand out. But on top of that, it really resonates with the doomer in me. My life isn't actually all that bad, but when I see how much ♥♥♥♥ the protag has to go through, I can't help but go "yep, that's the world we live in, I'm just one of the luckier ones." And it's so sad to see so many EGS users relate to the protag's situation... I like the balance of depressing and happy moments in this game, which is skewed towards the former. It's a very solid nakige, and also my favorite short VN thus far—I generally avoid short VNs because it's hard for me to find them moving, and even this would've likely been a 9 or a 10 for me if it was at least twice as long. Having said that, I think nakige are meant to make you cry mostly at the end, when things get resolved in a cathartic way, but for me it was all about the dream scenes this time. The protag's relationship with the girl in his dreams (who seems to be the same person as the main heroine) is quite fascinating. It's the one place where he doesn't feel the need to hide his feelings for her (unlike reality, where everything is complicated), but the way she talks and reacts suggests that she might be more than a figment of his subconsciousness. These were my favorite parts of the game. And while it's not exactly the same, I can relate to having mental conversations with your crush that you never got together with, which is something I'm guilty of whenever I start thinking too much about that girl I liked in HS and what could've been (but realistically was probably never possible). Also, the main girl(s) smiles so much in this. It's a joy to watch, especially since the art style is so crisp and clean and the game is in 1080p. Mmmmm... With the exception of a couple minor details, I personally never managed to figure out the core story until all the reveals came, which is a plus as it kept things intriguing for the whole duration. YMMV, though. In retrospect, it shouldn't have been too hard to deduce. The full version of the OP has 1m views on YT, on the dev's channel, where other stuff has far less. And the lyrics... Oh boy. There's so much to unpack here. When you know the context, it hits right in the feels. I highly recommend checking it out after playing the game (you might get spoiled otherwise).
Also, I didn't realize the connection with Seven Days even though I've played that too, until I saw an EGS review that mentioned how the "blue disk" from 蒼のリング 開くドア in the lyrics is a reference to the blu-ray from which the protag of Seven Days ended up summoning Chiyako, which is relevant because the girl in the dream says these dreams only began because of an (electromagnetic?) wave that just so happened to appear. I was wondering why the story of Dreamin' Her is shown to take place in 2017 (why put it so far back if the game came out in 2022?) and guess what, Seven Days also came out in 2017. Mind=blown. Should we be treating this game as a spin-off of Seven Days at this point?
I have to say, that episode with
forging a number on the report card reminded me of Better Call Saul :D Okay, he didn't end up using the printer at the convenience store because the type of paper was wrong, but it was part of his original plan.
I also absolutely love the craziness of the whole situation
and how the protag feels the need to do that just to hide having left school early one time. And how his mother obviously doubts him and calls the school and his teacher covers up for him without ever being asked to do so (unironically role model teacher), and then the mother genuinely feels bad about doubting her son so the protag confesses out of guilt and she completely flips out and instantly makes you regret choosing to be sincere... It's also nice and realistic how, in the end, the protag mentions how she never truly changes and still wants to be strict and possessive. She's only backed off because she saw what too much pressure did to her son, and would've only realized the error of her ways if he'd actually died.
There's not too much I can complain about here, other than the short length (it really feels like there's room to expand the story) and the lack of a BGM gallery. There's also a few minor but spoilery things below.
Throughout the VN, we repeatedly see the protag asking himself why he wants to write, but we never get an answer to that... Is it an outlet for him in an otherwise stifling family environment? I can't be sure about this, so I do wish this was actually explained at some point.

The protag got violently bullied just about everywhere in the past for seemingly no reason whatsoever, to the point where it feels exaggerated even to someone as disillusioned with the world as me. Initially I thought that maybe Mirai stopped talking to him after that time he got badly beaten up at the end of primary school because the bully liked her and she rejected him so he took it out on the protag, and maybe Mirai felt responsible and thought it would be in his interest that she stay away from him, but that wasn't the case and the actual reason was less convincing imo (she "felt she had no right to be by his side if she can't protect him"). I think this is one of the ways they could've expanded the story—give a reason for all the violence the protag went through, so that it's more believable.

Also, what were they going to do if no miracle happened and the protag never got to see those dreams and remember everything? Was Mirai planning to keep a distance from him forever, neither telling him the truth directly nor giving any hints that might help him remember? Even though it seems pretty likely that he would've killed himself soon enough, since she was his only joy in life... Oh well, it's fiction, I guess :P To be fair, I guess she did tell him that he sees someone else when looking at her, but for some reason he doesn't even try to think what she might've meant by that—and also what she said wasn't even true. Again, this could've maybe been fixed with a longer story that would either have Mirai actually do more to try to help, or it would be explained why she doesn't do anything despite being in love with him.

a really nice short story, runs perfectly on steam deck
