It's a basic RPG but it works. If that's your thing, on sale it's not bad.

Drayt Empire is an indie fantasy role-playing game developed by RPG Video and published by Back To Basics Gaming. Designed with clear inspiration from classic JRPG traditions, the game presents a modest but earnest adventure built around exploration, simple turn-based combat, and a light narrative centered on friendship and discovery. It does not attempt to compete with the scale or complexity of modern RPGs; instead, it embraces the design philosophy of older, smaller role-playing experiences that focused on straightforward mechanics and a clear sense of adventure. For players familiar with RPG Maker-style games or retro fantasy titles, the game immediately feels recognizable in both its presentation and structure. The story follows two friends, Ronarke and Drayt, who set out on a journey to locate the long-lost city of Rahland. According to legend, the mysterious city holds powerful secrets and has been hidden from the world for generations. What begins as an ambitious exploration quickly turns into a larger quest filled with dangerous enemies, strange locations, and discoveries about the world surrounding them. The narrative follows a traditional fantasy formula, placing emphasis on the heroes’ journey rather than complex political intrigue or dramatic plot twists. While the story itself remains fairly simple, it succeeds in providing a clear motivation for the characters and serves as a foundation for the exploration-driven adventure that unfolds. Gameplay in Drayt Empire revolves primarily around traveling through a series of towns, wilderness areas, and dungeon locations while encountering enemies along the way. Movement occurs on a top-down map, with players navigating through forests, deserts, and villages as they gradually progress toward the ultimate goal of reaching the hidden city. Along the journey, players interact with non-player characters, discover items, and uncover small story events that help build the world around the protagonists. The structure of exploration is very much in line with traditional RPG design, where each new area introduces stronger enemies and new equipment that allows the party to grow stronger. Combat plays a central role in the adventure and follows a familiar turn-based format. Battles occur whenever the party encounters enemies in the environment, shifting to a side-view perspective where characters and monsters exchange attacks. During each turn, players can choose actions such as basic attacks, special skills, or using items from their inventory. The mechanics are intentionally straightforward, making it easy to understand how combat functions without requiring complicated strategies. While the system does not offer the depth found in larger RPG titles, it works effectively within the scope of the game and provides a consistent rhythm of exploration followed by battles. Character progression is supported through a simple leveling system and a unique crystal mechanic that allows players to customize their abilities. Throughout the world, players can discover a variety of magical crystals that provide bonuses or unlock special effects during combat. These crystals can be equipped to enhance characters’ strengths or compensate for weaknesses, adding a small but meaningful layer of customization to the gameplay. Collecting and experimenting with these crystals becomes one of the more engaging aspects of progression, encouraging players to explore hidden corners of the map in search of new upgrades. The game also introduces a few additional activities that help break up the core gameplay loop. Players can participate in small side features such as fishing or digging for hidden treasures in desert areas. These mechanics are relatively simple, but they add a bit of variety and give players extra opportunities to gather resources or discover helpful items. While these features are not deeply developed systems, they contribute to the sense of traveling through a world filled with small diversions and hidden rewards. Visually, Drayt Empire adopts a traditional pixel-art presentation that strongly reflects the influence of classic RPG Maker titles. Environments are constructed using colorful tiles that represent towns, natural landscapes, and dungeon interiors. Character sprites and enemy designs follow a similar retro aesthetic, giving the game a nostalgic appearance that will feel familiar to fans of early 2D RPGs. The visual style may appear simple compared to modern indie RPGs with more detailed artwork, but it successfully captures the spirit of old-school fantasy adventures. The soundtrack complements the game’s tone by providing background music that matches the atmosphere of each location. Peaceful melodies accompany village areas, while more dramatic tracks play during battles or exploration of dangerous environments. Although the music remains relatively understated, it supports the overall mood of the game and helps maintain the feeling of a classic fantasy quest. Despite its charm, the game’s modest scope can also be seen as one of its limitations. The mechanics remain quite simple throughout the adventure, and players who expect deep character systems or highly strategic combat may find the gameplay somewhat repetitive over time. The story, while pleasant, does not develop into a particularly complex narrative, and character interactions remain fairly limited. In addition, the visual presentation and structure clearly reflect the constraints of its RPG Maker origins, which may feel dated compared to more ambitious indie RPG projects. However, these limitations also reflect the game’s identity as a small and focused indie project. Drayt Empire does not aim to deliver a massive open-world epic but rather a short, approachable fantasy adventure that can be completed in a relatively modest amount of time. For players who enjoy classic RPG Maker games or simple retro-style role-playing experiences, the game offers a relaxing journey that emphasizes exploration and steady progression rather than overwhelming complexity. In the end, Drayt Empire succeeds as a nostalgic tribute to traditional RPG design. Its straightforward gameplay, lighthearted story, and familiar mechanics combine to create an experience that feels comfortably old-fashioned. While it may not stand out among larger modern RPGs, it provides a pleasant and accessible adventure for players who appreciate retro-inspired fantasy games and smaller indie projects built around classic role-playing traditions.
